More Trump quotes repeated by Zap Brannigan, these guest starring Kiff1

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 03:16 PM) A crucial piece because Joe Buck's call was beyond bland. I've got all the others from that year saved up also - the Konerko GS, Podsednik's HR, Hawk's call on clinching, "JOE CREDE". Still makes me smile.

If you're not following @suethetrex on twitter, the Field Museum has been going back and forth with basically all the museums in Cleveland for the past 2 days and it's spectacular.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 02:22 PM) I wouldn't even worry about them after 2 months. There's going to be some growing pains but come April or so they're going to be deadly. We'll get some fun freak outs from the fans and the National Media though. Conveniently, we have seen this exact thing before. The 2010-2011 Miami Heat were 9-8 through 17 games.

For reference, I'm also wearing one of my 2 05 parade shirts today. Taught 2 classes in it - couple students caught on that it was a World Series commentary, also pointed out to them that it was the 11th anniversary and that ESPN and CBS have forgotten we existed.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 09:24 AM) This is what I'm talking about. He's not Stewart. He can't BE Stewart. People gotta let him be who he is instead of comparing him to how closely he can approximate Stewart's delivery. He can't. Neither Oliver nor Bee attempts to be Stewart, yet they have their own voice and can nail some unbeatable moments. That's what keeps me tuning in.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 09:22 AM) I think Stewart was a specific person for a specific time. Before Bush was elected the Daily Show was basically what it is now (without the viral factor), but then 9-11 happened and we had that years-long period of absurdity with the Bush administration and Republicans, and his show evolved into a type of salve for liberals to cope with until we could get our own people back in charge. Once Obama was elected, that wasn't really needed anymore, and since Stewart never actually WANTED to be this cultural focal point, he recognized it was a good time to move on so he stepped down. There really isn't any re-creating the Daily Show from, say, 2002-2008. That time is now past. Stewart vs Fox News 08-14 was still some of his best work. I gave Trevor a good 6 month tryout but just wasn't finding it engrossing, eventually started looking away. Still check out the occasional clip online but it hasn't yet grabbed me with a reason to turn in. Havne't caught Sam's show from Monday yet, but both her last week and Oliver on Sunday had at least 2 very loud laugh outbursts from me each, the Daily Show wasn't getting any of those once Stewart left.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 05:32 PM) trump supporters are now chanting Nazi anti-press rhetoric at his rallies, "lugenpress" I'm actually a little conflicted now, because that's some decent historical knowledge. I didn't know that one - they've done their homework.
-
QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 10:20 AM) That was the point of the public option. Also worth noting - keeping companies in the exchanges even if they underestimated their costs was the point of the "risk corridor" funds inserted into the original PPACA. Marco Rubio had this stripped out through a clause inserted into an omnibus spending bill.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 10:17 AM) So the cost estimates were too low? Get out. Actually they were too high. This increase brings overall rates into line with what was predicted in about 2010 by the CBO.

QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 08:55 AM) Indians' Jason Kipnis defends Steve Bartman, thinks he should throw first pitch. I think the person who would say no to this is Steve Bartman.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 04:31 PM) Yea well the late 90s Indians had to deal with the late 90s Yankees, and the Cubs staff is the best in baseball. The late 90s Indians rotations were pretty much mediocre at best, the Cubs staff is no joke That Cubs staff is solid, but I don't think anyone coming into the season would have called them the best in baseball, and although they put up the best ERA the Mets, Nats, and Dodgers had better FIP and more fWAR from their rotations. If we're talking about more than 1 year, they have a strong staff but it's not the strongest part of their roster for whatever that is worth.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 03:46 PM) You don't have to like it. But it's true. It's to the point now that 88-90 wins would be considered an off year for them with their current core. I struggle think that Heyward won't be substantially better next year.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 03:31 PM) Bullpen arms seem to fluctuate from year to year. Who knows, maybe it'll be their Achilles heal next season. The question will be what they do in the offseason to upgrade their pen. They could win the bidding war for Chapman and assuming he doesn't shoot his wife this offseason he alone leaves you with a pretty strong back end.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 19, 2016 -> 05:43 PM) Greg, what is with the riots and rebellions you keep talking about? Are you watching too many movies or something? The blah peoples.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 19, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) If a Sale or Q trade worked out the same way the Miggy trade worked out for the Marlins, there would be a lot of unhappiness. The problem is...how well holding Mike Trout is working for the Angels.

So everyone has noted the irony between the Tomlin incident being in this series and our thread for the Cubs/Dodgers having the subtitle "you were Droning on", right? Ok, good, moving on.
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 03:22 PM) Please, December... come soon. 6 plus weeks of super fun speculation I think if you're waiting until December you're going to have a serious problem. If there's an early free agency run on the handful of available outfielders and catchers, and if I were a GM that needed one of those positions I'd know what my offers to Fowler/Desmond/Castro/Wieters are right now, then this team winds up between a rock and a hard place - unable to find the pieces it needs to get better, but possibly without any team rising to the price for Sale.

1000 more people shot in Chicago vs same time last year

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 02:29 PM) This isn't necessarily directed at you but I think it's impossible to have this conversation without distinguishing between legal and illegal guns. The vast majority of the Chicago's gun violence comes from illegal guns. No laws are going to stop that. Criminials are going to be criminals. FWIW, there have been some CPD stats released on this that suggested ~60% of the guns they seized were guns exchanged in Wisconsin and Indiana through means that thanks to the loose laws in those states did not require a background check, and another 20% of the seized guns could be traced directly to literally 3 gun shops in those 2 states that the Illinois laws can't touch. There's a bunch of other interesting details about the gun types used and manufacturing history of smuggled guns in this piece as well. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:41 PM) I've said it before but I find it startling that we really don't know why crime rose dramatically in the 60s-80s and then fell just as dramatically in 90s-00s. And now it rises again and we don't know what to do. That's scary. Just in case - have you followed the case Kevin Drum has made trying to link it to exposure to leaded gasoline? -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 10:31 AM) If guns were more readily available in Chicago, would we see a drop in violence or would it explode? I tend to think the latter, but I'm liberal when it comes to gun control. Thoughts? I think that it's easy enough to get a gun in this country that I sincerely doubt it would make a difference. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:13 AM) I think everyone just assumes it will be Kershaw on short rest because he's Kershaw and then he might be available for game 7. But as of right now, you are right, it is Maeda. I'd imagine they'll probably put it in Kershaw's hands if they're facing elimination, but if it's a 2-2 series I'm not sure. My instinct would be to rest him and give him game 6 to either close it out or to force game 7.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:39 AM) Sorry, let me clarify. I meant he fell off this year in the 2nd half. 1st half OPS was .926, 2nd half OPS was .728. That is a warning sign to me. In the first half of 2016 his K-rate had dropped to 20% and his BABIP was .342. It doesn't look like he was making unusually hard contact - had more ground balls than usual, etc. In the 2nd half his K-rate went back up but still not to where it was in previous seasons and his BABIP was .274 - and his # of ground balls actually went down in the 2nd half. His walk rate dropped a little in the 2nd half but basically still hung around 10%. I might be missing something but I don't see any obvious reason to think those 1st/2nd half splits are anything other than fairly random noise around a mean.
