  2. I DID read the first post, and the following 100 posts, in fact. The information you refer to was in your link, which I skipped. But now I see.
  3. Get the government out of the “marriage” biz! If something is considered sacred, then it is the providence of religion. Churches should have every right to say who can be blessed, who is going to heaven, who is going to hell, what their sacraments are, who can get married, who (if anyone) can get divorced, ad infinitum. If you don’t like it – press for change within your religion, join another one, or drop out altogether. The state, on the other hand, has a vested interest in certain cultural details such as how children are protected and raised up to become functional members of the society, and how property is distributed when relationships dissolve. If government wishes to confer certain benefits on couples (as the government has the right to define this status), then these benefits should be available to ALL couples so defined. It is as simple as that. It’ll get sorted out eventually, and I tend to think that it will happen a bit faster than the original civil rights struggle, since most people have homosexual relatives, professional colleagues and close acquaintances. Oh yeah - The Gropinator - I assume he'll veto that bill.
  4. Red-flag quotation in the Rogers column: “Throw out one-run games and the Sox would have been 2½ games behind…..” blah blah blah Any “analysis” which requires you to discard a substantial part of the data set is strictly fantasyland material. Now if we could just “throw out” the games with Oakland, we should be able to proceed straight to the World Series, shouldn’t we?
  5. How about a compromise which would seem to benefit everyone? Let El Duque make his remaining scheduled starts to keep him sharp and in the groove for the playoffs, but give him the hook after four or five innings, and trot McCarthy out to finish off each game. Also, regarding Ozzie’s sarcastic remark about McCarthy being no Roger Clemens: there’s a dark side to his humor that can be very unattractive, especially when he’s dealing with younger players. He did something similar when he made a point of belittling Willie Harris’s talent during a Jackie Robinson appreciation-type event (last year?).
  6. "Reverse that bogus call, cholo, or I kiss you smack dab on the lips right here and now." "No really, none of the guys in my ‘hood in Scottsdale do high fives. Come on, Jermaine, just try it this way one time." "Sure, I’ve got my cup on. But when my feet hit the ground, you better be running back to the dugout like your life depends on it. Oh, and by the way – I'm tight with our pitcher, so next at bat, I suggest you cinch it up and hunker down." Washed out of Sumo wrestling as “just too small”, new Yomiuri Giants pitcher has his sights set on a new sport. Most glaring weakness so far – difficulty covering first base on grounders. "Cooties? Nah, I don’t believe in cooties. That might be a pterodactyl bite, though" AND FINALLY: ANY current pic of Brandon McCarthy could take a standard caption: Will Work For Food. That young man needs a major league nutrition program.
  7. Hi all. I guess I need to stop lurking, break the ice, and make a post. I’m a long-time Sox fan (and before that, a Washington Senators fan – to give you some idea of the distance between my age and that of most of the other posters here. ) But this thread about the black actor in the AFLAC commercials has been driving me crazy. Can someone who thinks it is Barry Shabaka Henley post a link to that information? I really don’t think he’s the actor in those commercials, although they do look very similar. Thanks to this thread, I ended up finding out more about that company then I ever wanted to know, and even watched their Japanese commercials. Of course, all I could understand was the duck.
