QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 02:22 PM) Well, shadow banking or not, glass steagall there were many actors that were not just "big banks" that were huge reasons for the billions swallowed up in 2008. Of course, but the biggest shockwaves were IB's of one kind or another. In some cases there was a crossing of the 'Chinese Wall' (i.e. MF Global), in other cases not. And here we are with bigger banks. Glass Steagel is, IMO, a good idea, and I don't see Sanders saying it fixes everything.

The Top 30 White Sox Prospects, Preseason 2016

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) Thanks for the great work as usual. If you had to only pick one, which Sox prospect do you think increases his stock the most in 2016? These questions usually end up becoming "who do I like as a prospect more than other folks", so I'll just throw out there that I was higher than the crowd on: Hawkins (I had him highest at 7th), Lassiter (highest at 24th), and I had Nunez and KSmith on the back of my list where only one other person voted for each. But a better way is, who are the toolsy ones with the most ceiling room left to play with on this list? I'd go with either Amado Nunez or Johan Cruz. Lassiter is close. -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 02:31 PM) Guys like Brennan and Lowry could move really fast once they become relievers officially. Lowry doesn't look like a reliever, though that could change. He's got a pretty even repertoire, plenty of endurance, and no dominant single pitch. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 02:33 PM) I struggle evaluating Brennan but I agree that he should see improvement once he moves to the pen. Lowry has got a big year ahead of him. Pretty meager results for a guy repeating Kanny. Brennan is odd. He's a guy to follow, there's serious raw talent there... but he was already raw when drafted (one year college pitching, despite being 21), then missed more time as a pro to TJS, and then to a neck injury. So he's way behind the development curve for his age. But he does have a good sinker and a slider that flashes good characteristics. 2016 will be a telling year. I think he's a reliever, but they may keep him as a starter one more season to make up for lost innings. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 02:18 PM) that is the one thing that i am wondering. can the sox and the lineup deal with his hitting and not walking???? for the minors, he is developing..... i just have to wait until his stats starts coming in in the minor league games. don't get me wrong, he is an exciting player and there is a reason why some teams have inquired about him in any possible trade request.... per cincy rumor, His not walking is less of a concern in the pure sense - if he hits enough, not walking isn't a big killer. The problem is what it indicates about him as a hitter, and that is backed up by our in-person looks. He's too free-swinging, wants to go after too many pitches, expands the zone. He's susceptible to good offspeed stuff. He needs to learn patience not primarily to walk more (though that's a pleasant side effect), but in order to force pitchers to come to him. I think AAA is going to be a key test for him. People seem to assume he'll just make a quick touch and go in Charlotte then be in Chicago, but that's a mistake. AAA pitchers are not much more talented than AA ones, but they are going to be a lot more refined, mature, experienced and able to exploit glaring weaknesses. Anderson is able to cover his weakness in this area because he has such quick hands and strong bat to ball skills, but that only goes so far and will probably be exposed (hopefully for only a brief period) in AAA. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) Welp...in the market for a car (unexpectedly). Our 2005 Pilot got rear ended and now damage has totaled the vehicle out (thankfully everyone was okay). Rec actually happened about a month ago but insurance has been a drag as other drive has been lying (thankfully police report called her out for such). Either way, was curious to see if anyone here happens to have a Sonata Hybrid (I've done the research, but curious in case anyone here happens to own one of the Hybrids). We are leaning towards getting the 2016 hybrid limited (was amazed at the bargains they got on those things). I actually was figuring I'd buy the all new pilot or highlander (our other vehicle is the previous generation Hybrid) but after seeing the cost of the Sonota decided we'd go a bit more economical and fuel efficient for our 2nd driver (knowing we have the bigger car for weekends / kid hauling). If you want fuel efficiency in an SUV, there is (or was anyway) a Highlander Hybrid, but the differential cost is huge. It was like 8k or something ridiculous. I've been salivating over the Lexus NX hybrid SUV, but it's not cheap either (comparable price to a Highlander, and more luxurious and more efficient, but much smaller). Hard to find an SUV with truly good fuel efficiency that is relatively inexpensive. I wish they still made the Escape Hybrids, was kind of mad Ford dropped those.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 12:36 PM) The Nobelist makes a point: I've read quite a bit on Shadow Banking, and I fundamentally disagree that it was the major reason for the 2008 meltdown. The single biggest killer was the toxic unwind from OTC swaps, though other big players included the mortgage banking debacle and the problems of private and customer banking being intertwined. Shadow banking was much further down the list, in my view. Yes I know this is a nobel guy we're talking about, and no I'm not saying I am smarter than he is. I am saying he is far too narrowly focused to see the broader picture, in my opinion.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 12:23 PM) The top six (Danish at 5 and Guerrero at 6) were pretty unanimous. After that we started to go all over the board. Close to it, yeah. Danish all 5's and 6's, Guerrero 6's and 7's with one 5. Just for fun, prospects who had the widest range of opinions among the writers: Zangari, Clark, Alvarez, Peter, Lowry, Perez, Narvaez. Relatively anyway. Also, players who had just one of the seven writers in the discussion actually place them in their T30: Wheeler, Heidenreich, Cherry, Alfaro, Comito, Reyes, Goldberg, Leyer, Delmonico. That's how messy the back end was. -

If you're a twitterati, watch the FS account. We're likely to do a Q&A on there, either shortly or later this afternoon, about the rankings. Feel free to join the fun if you see it getting started. @FutureSox -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 03:25 AM) Can we arm the Oglala Sioux to go in and take them out?...kind of like a real life recreation of the tv show Banshee without the gratuitous nudity. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 09:35 AM) I was joking...since they clearly have zero understanding of US history or approximately how many treaties the US government has broken when dealing with Native American issues. Nor do you it would seem, as the Sioux were never near that area. Paiute and Klamath are the right tribes in this case, as I understand it.

For the record, among the 7 writers who contributed to the list by voting and discussing, the final count was 4-3 in favor of Anderson for #1. Divided court, as close as can be. I went Anderson. I have concerns about Fulmer's delivery, but more importantly, I was really impressed with what Anderson did this year. His defense improving a lot to where he's likely a future shortstop is big. His hitting at that level and age is also big. -
It's here! Here is our list of the Top 30 White Sox Prospects going into the 2016 season. This is the result of work from nearly the entire FS writing staff, and we're quite proud of it, though of course it is subjective and everyone will have different opinions. There is also in there a list of players who were discussed but just missed. What do you think of the list? What would you have done differently? Also, if you like it, please do share it around social media or with your friends!

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 02:06 PM) These people are garbage 4,000 artifacts stored at Oregon refuge held by armed group The level of cognitive dissonance going on here is stunning. Also, it's way past time to start pushing on this. I was all for patience, but only if it slowly led to steps to work it out, and if they failed, then cautiously begin escalation. As far as I can see, they haven't done a darn thing. Of course, maybe they have and we don't know it, but the more obvious actions should have started well before now.

Top White Sox Prospects - Players 16-30
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 10:44 AM) He's young for his league every season, pretty elite walk rate at every stop, sounds like his defense will atleast be league average, the biggest question now is how will the power develop. I think he can be an every day regular at the major league level and that's a pretty big coup for a 6th round pick. He was an overslot pick, got 3rd round money. Defense is a question with him - he's a bit stiff and has a hitch in his throws. Power development also a question, as is the development of the hit tool generally. There's a lot to like, but he does need more polish. -
Also, if you live in the Chicago area, you can actually take a train directly to Glacier National Park. There are resorts in the park, and endless hiking opportunities and scenery. The Amtrak leaves Union Station (or Glenview) daily, you can get a cabin room for the overnight trip.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 02:44 PM) I am looking for honeymoon locations out west (Montana and Wyoming, ideally). Anyone have experience with any of the towns there? We had a family reunion at a resort in SW Montana that was really fun. Cabins, but nice ones. Excellent food. Tons of activities - hiking, fly fishing, horseback, rafting, day trips to Yellowstone, etc. And shuttles to and from the Bozeman airport. Called Lone Mountain Guest Ranch, in Big Sky. Recommended.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 08:40 AM) There are a couple guys that will be left off the Top 30 that I didn't expect to be. I'll predict the Top 15 as such: 1. Tim Anderson SS 2. Carson Fulmer RHP 3. Spencer Adams RHP 4. Trey Michalczewski 3B 5. Tyler Danish RHP 6. Jordan Guerrero LHP 7. Micker Adolfo OF 8. Jacob May CF 9. Adam Engel CF 10. Courtney Hawkins OF 11. Corey Zangari 1B 12. Chris Beck RHP 13. Amado Nunez SS 14. Brandon Brennan RHP 15. Brian Clark LHP That leaves off guys like: Jhoandro Alfaro, Johan Cruz, Robinson Leyer, Michael Ynoa, Andre Wheeler, Blake Hickman, and Keon Barnum. I'll give you a hint. Two of your Top 15 aren't on our list. You'll see who tomorrow. -
It's that time of year - we are releasing our preseason Top 30 White Sox Prospects list. As has become the tradition, we release the back half of the list first... then release the full list plus a list of just-missed names a day or two later. The 16-30 "teaser" article is now up, with detailed capsules of each of those 15 prospects. You can click on their name to go to the prospect profile for more details. What do you think? Anyone not there you thought should be? Who do you think makes up the T15?

Well I'll be damned. I don't know how ISU beat this OU team when OU went 17-32 from 3-land, but I'll take it. Didn't get to watch the game. Still now sure "who" this ISU team is. -
QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 12:11 PM) For where they ranked Peter it didn't seem like they were too high on his ceiling, more so his floor. That in and of itself speaks volumes for how they feel about the depth of the system ranking him where they do. They pretty much really like Anderson, Fulmer, and Adams, and are pretty meh on the balance of the system. The funny thing is, outside the top 3, the systems looks upside down right now. You've got high floor guys in the back of the T10 and to the teens, then a lot of low floor but potentially high ceiling youngsters from the teens on. At least for me anyway.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 11:41 AM) I like that it seems like he's coachable. As we were discussing out new Top 30 list (which comes out next week), one of the reasons we liked him and are going to rank him pretty highly is his shown ability to adjust. Even in his pro short season, he made significant adjustments and improvements in that 2.5 months, and adapted well from at bat to at bat. That's a big key, and a differentiator vs what we saw from, say, Keon Barnum. It's still quite early of course, but he's showing much more than just raw power at this point.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 08:30 AM) How did Zangari last until the 5th round? Okie State commit. Took 3rd round money to get him, he had leverage and looked likely to go to college. Also, he was taken in the 6th, not 5th.

The second chapter in Kim's Year One series covers Corey Zangari. The series is a deep dive into the history, and first pro year, for a handful of this past year's draftees. She did Jordan Stephens a few weeks ago, and will do Seby Zavala next. These are very well-researched.
