  1. So, he's just getting started with trying to re-vamp the Sox' minor league system, but the Orioles are already asking permission to speak with him about a front office position under Mr. McPhail.
  2. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 12:34 PM) Which of my criticisms is unfounded? Anyone can write "crap" next to some player's name. Do you think your response has done anything at all to answer the poster's questions?
  3. Beastly, you will see a bunch of posts like this one... QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) Jack Egbert -- will be exposed, I think, once he gets to better competition. I think he's a fluke and he has a lot to prove. Donny Lucy -- Career backup at best. He's lousy with the bat, as was shown when he came up, and needs to do a lot of work. Good defender, though. Ryan Sweeney -- needs steroids. Only partially kidding. He took a huge step back this year. Needs to learn how to turn on the fastball. Hit pitches hard. Lance Broadway -- I think he's crap. He definitely has a lot to prove. He did really good in September, especially in his spot-start, but his stuff isn't all that hot and he isn't a safe bet to do much, IMO. Could be a surprise, I guess. Gavin Floyd -- Probable fifth starter, unless he manages to once AGAIN lose a job that's gift-wrapped for him. I don't think he's any good. Heath Phillips -- Sucks. Adam Russell -- Fastball disappeared, or Slowed, after leaving ST. Reliever at best. Robert Valido -- Crap. Dewon Day -- Crap. Brian Anderson -- Crap. With injuries. David Aardsma -- Still got good stuff, but he's got some issues with control. People say it's in his head. Ryan Bukvich -- crap. Nick Masset -- I think he sucks. Lots of people think he's got a better chance of being a good starter. All I know is he's never put up consistently good numbers and it's in fact the other way around. Andrew Sisco -- knock on him is that he's lazy; he's also got ridiculously bad control. He's got potential, but he's getting old. It'll be awhile before he is "restored" to quality. He's just not good now. he's being made a starter, though. ... that are so full of unfounded judgements, positive AND negative, that its pointless to read much into them. Some people just like to rah-rah the team no matter what, and others find it easy to say everyone stinks. I'd suggest you spend some time reading the AAP pages and the FutureSox forum, and looking at the stats on MILB.com, and searching the net for some scouting info, if you really want some good information. There are also other sides like Cheat's blog that are really great for getting solid info on prospects. Check all of that out and judge for yourself.
  4. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/c63d8768-7ce3-11...?nclick_check=1 Good. That bill was either idiotically or diabolically timed - either way, it was entirely unhelpful to everyone, including the Dems in Congress.
  5. QUOTE(Beastly @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) Just looking at some names; I kind of just put them in different groups. Group A: Jack Egbert, Donny Lucy, Ryan Sweeney, Lance Broadway, Gavin Floyd, Heath Phillips, Adam Russell Group B: Robert Valido, Dewon Day, Brian Anderson, David Aardsma, Ryan Bukvich, Nick Masset, Andrew Sisco I'm not much for minor leagues, but out of these guys, who do we expect to be back on (or in contention for) the White Sox 25-man roster? Are we still under the belief that Richar will start next year? What are your guys' thoughts on the bullpen next year? What kind of moves do you expect Williams to do this off-season? I was sort of out of the loop at the end of the year (I moved to Charleston, IL for college at EIU) so if someone could fill me in on some of our September callups, it would be great. P.S.-How do I change my name from Beastly to something else? It's a bit old, and I'm not the moron I once was. Regarding the various prospects and others you listed, I'd advice checking out the FutureSox forum. Lots of good info in there, and discussions are always welcome. There are AAP (Adopt-a-Prospect) pages for some of them as well, to give you background. About your name... try the "How Does That Work?" forum.
  6. So, the infamous SCHIP bill is dead. Passed both houses, Bush vetoed, Senate overrode, but the House just couldn't get enough votes, falling 13 short of the necessary number. What will probably be looked back upon with this whole thing, is... here is a President who let Congress (both GOP and Dem led) spend their pants off, without being responsible enough to bring in income to support that spending, refusing to veto anything, and then when he finally breaks it out, what does he veto? A bill to provide more money to more sick children?! The issue is of course much more complex than that. We all know this. But, in the eye of the general public, the above is how it is perceived. Bush managed to blunder himself into another debacle, even though in this case, his actions may have gotten it partly right. How bad is a President, when he can't even look good when he does something sort of right?
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) Ron Paul is the biggest potential spoiler in the race. He has a couple of hot button issues that he appeals to a lot of people on, plus he has done it in the past. I agree. Tancredo is a one-trick pony, I don't think he'd do much damage in a national election (thank God - that guy is scary).
  8. QUOTE(G&T @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 10:55 AM) actually it made me laugh out loud in class. This is my first post ever from a class. Yay Con Law I actually enjoyed both my Con Law classes.
  9. QUOTE(NUKE @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) That's an excellent point. One saving grace for radio, however, is that you can't log onto the internet during your drive time, which is when a lot of folks tune into talk radio. That's very true. And I think the whole XM/Sirius thing, along with HD radio, has given a bit of resurgence to radio. Probably a temporary one, though.
  10. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) Allow me to bask briefly in my taxonomic dorkiness to inform you—wholly without the aid of The Google, mind you—that the skunk in that video is Mephites mephites, and not the co-occurring American skunk species Spilogale putorius or its western congener S. gracilis. I took Mammalogy in my senior year of college 20 years ago (yikes), and I still can't purge that cr@p from the cranial hard drive. . . Really? Hm. Similar to skunks... Tell me about Coatimundi.
  11. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) "Bill Richardson is a great man, but so is Hillary. I'm not sure who to vote for yet" Is that something he said? That's hilarious.
  12. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 10:20 AM) I wouldn't actually say that's bad news for you folks. Thin out your race a little bit, concentrate the money more, and give you a comptetive candidate in that governor's race. A big part of me would like to see Mr. Richardson consider doing the same thing for the soon-to-be-vacant New Mexico Senate Seat, which he'd win in a landslide if he ran for it (a seat currently held by a Republican). I'd bet money that Richardson would rather stay Governor of NM, or take a cabinet post from another candidate, or be a VOP nom, than run for Senate. I think that seat is likely to go Dem anyway, the way NM is going. So I don't think you'll get your wish.
  13. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) You have it backwards, but of course, you'll see it that way. Swiftboat was about exposing John Kerry as a hypocrite that he is. I have it backwards? Look at the name - Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. That was what they called themselves. What does a swift boat have to do with Kerry's testimony or hipocrisy? Zero. It was about his conduct that won him a medal of honor for his actions on a SWIFT BOAT. Now, later on, they went on to disparage Kerry for an assortment of other Nam stuff, some of which may have actually been true. But I am afraid you are mistaken as to what that organization was, originally. And that has nothing to do with "how I see it" - its right there in their bloody name for crying out loud.
  14. QUOTE(NUKE @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 09:34 AM) Not hard to see really, in fact it's a perfect fit. The Swifties were out to expose John Kerry for his 2 faced conduct during the election cycle. He went around lying to the United States Senate during the Winter Soldier Investigations of 1971, bringing, to steal a phrase, a bunch of phony soldiers up there to testify about atrocities that they not only did not witness but in fact did not exist at all. His actions served to smear every man and woman that served in that war and that's exactly the type of person I have no use for whatsoever. That was an aside. The swifties' crusade was about Kerry's medal of honor, and his conduct during the mission(s) related to it. And in that crusade they had nothing but B.S. to fling at him. I don't see how you can support that, but be so angry about people like myself (being without military experience) saying the war is a terrible mistake.
  15. QUOTE(NUKE @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 09:30 AM) I do have an objective question, though. Why do you guys think that liberal radio is struggling so much while conservative radio is an explosive success? Is it the message, the marketing, maybe a combination of both? Is it a demographic thing ( being that most listeners of talk radio are white males )? I'd go with a combination of poor marketing and the personality of the demographics involved. Marketing is pretty obvious - they just do a really poor job of it, and the conservatives are just better at the business end of things. But another key is that the personality types of the mainline and further left, nowadays, is way too online-oriented. Radio is passe. Whereas the mainline and further right tends to be more old school - radio is still big time. The liberal folks are far better at the online battleground than the rightists are. That doesn't bode well for the future for the GOP, since that is the direction things are going.
  16. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) So I went to the Al Gore dinner last night at the Hyatt downtown. I first saw him at the pre-dinner reception when he walked past me and gave me a nod. That was kind of neat. His speech was quite impressive. The main discussion point was climate change and the business world. He tried to drive home the point that the business leaders of today (the audience was comprised of Chicago's business leaders) need to foster the initiative and drive to make the changes needed to slow down global warming. The discussion covered many topics including China, the Kyoto protocol, etc. HE gave major props to Daley (who was seated at the deus) for environmental strides in Chicago. He interspersed some stories throughout; some serious and some humorous. He received a standing ovation upon his introduction as well as his closing remarks and I am sure there was quite a large representation of Republicans in the room if not perhaps a majority (I can't help but to think that most CEOs are Republicans...maybe I'm wrong). It was a great experience to be there and I am positive that if he was as laid back and 'human' as he comes across now, he would have won the 2000 election in a landslide. I saw him give a speech once, back when he was VP. He made some attempts at humor, which were actually pretty funny. The substance of his speech was so-so. Its been said here before... Gore became the victim of his own campaign staff in the 2000 election cycle. It was obvious that his "people" were telling him to put up a hard front, try to look tough and dignified - try not to be Clinton, basically. Except, that didn't work at all. The more laid back Gore is a lot more engaging and likeable. Obama seemed to suffer the same fate early on in his campaigning. They tried to dry him up, make him something less interesting than he was. Now he is finally letting the fighter out, but it might be too late.
  17. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) Only millions of people every week. Its sad that some people get their "news" that way. I suppose there are probably some radio and TV folks out there discussing politics that aren't polarizing sufferers of diahrea at the mouth. But I haven't heard or seen any yet.
  18. I get a good chuckle every time I hear the term "leftist". Its so absurd. I think I'll give up using the terms GOP or Republican, and go with Rightist.
  19. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) do you think congress is doing a good job? Nope. I think they made some good ground the first few weeks after they convened, but after that, they've been nearly worthless.
  20. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 07:09 PM) Congress approval ratings drop to 11% http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idU...=22&sp=true And Bush hits a record low at 24%. But, these are Zogby polls, and they are pretty much worthless. His methods are sloppy at best.
  21. Using those nifty links, today's results and games... In Arizona, for the Desert Dogs... Sweeney: 1-3, BB, R Lucy: 0-4, K (not doing well so far with the bat) Hernandez: 1.0 IP, 1 K and a bunch of zeroes In Hawaii for the Beach Boys... Inouye: 2-3 (DH'ing today, hitting .375 so far down there) Mexican, Dominican and Venezuelan all play tonight.
  22. I have updated Post #2 in this thread with the Dominican and Venezuelan players from the organization. I also added links for each league's scoreboard and each team's player stats sheet. The Sox have a LOT of people playing winter ball: 9 in the Dominican League, 7 in the AFL, 4 in the Mexican League, 3 in the Venezuelan League and 1 in Hawaii for a total of 24. They include both major leaguers and minor leaguers from many levels.
  23. Let's take this down a notch, lest we have to close the thread and/or do anything else ugly. Nuke, I don't see anyone here saying anything negative whatsoever about you or any other soldiers fighting for our country in Iraq. I understand that being in a war zone, you will be particularly sensitive to some out there in the general public who are not so kind. I share your ire towards those folks. But please do not take it out on the posters here, who have done nothing but support you as a soldier. Everyone else, please, let's remember these are talking heads trying to fire up their respective bases. Looks like it worked. Except everyone who has posted in this thread is smarter than that. Can we keep it clean from here on out please? If not, the thread will be closed and further action may be taken.
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 02:28 PM) So what does a guy like Wasserman work on in winter ball? Are they going to try to get him innings, or work on a new pitch? Oddly enough, if I recall correctly, I read somewhere it was his own idea, not the Sox'. I am not sure what he'd work on, really. Maybe he just feels like he didn't get enough innings in.
  25. QUOTE(NUKE @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 10:05 AM) This, in a nutshell, is why leftist talk radio fails. It's amazing to me how leftists can sit there with a straight face and call Conservative radio "hate radio" and almost in the same breath spew vile comments like this. And its the same garbage that comes out of conservative talk radio. Seriously, who listens to or reads any of this garbage?
