  1. Rainier and the Wonderland trail are on my short list of hikes I need to do, before I'm too old to enjoy them. Speaking of which, that's a fun idea. A list of outdoor/park/wilderness destinations that people who are in this thread have on their "bucket" list. What haven't you done that you most want to do?
  2. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 09:09 AM) Josh Norris and Bill Mitchell had some good stuff on twitter about Micker Adolfo yesterday. I can't go on twitter at work but it's worth posting if someone can find it. He had a homer, double, stolen base, and an impressive walk yesterday. Notes and video in the notebook here. Might be subscriber only.
  3. New nominee for worst executive/human of the year, Michael Quinlan.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 08:23 AM) He has some talent, but with the logjam already developing in the White Sox infield, it's also likely not a huge loss to the Sox if he is claimed by someone. He's not going to take a 3b spot, he's not going to take a 2b spot, the only place he could be really useful is SS, and that's blocked by an expensive veteran. Only caveat to that is if Alexei is traded, then he could well rapidly become needed. Those are good points too. He's not a big loss, but if they trade Alexei, you really want a guy like him in AAA just in case. And he does have some talent, I'd like to see him stay. He probably will.
  5. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 07:22 PM) Would you be interested in a 24 year old shortstop who put up an .850 OPS in half a season at AAA if it meant playing him less than Leury Garcia played this year? Not this one. Not a SS who has to be a utility guy and is coming off TJ surgery, making me wonder about how he'll handle throws that first year back. And will miss some time at the beginning of the year, forcing me to burn an option or signing early on then drop someone. And who had two straight mediocre years before turning it around this year. And who has shown he needs adjustment time, so he'll likely be pretty awful with the bat as a minimal-time player. Not to mention it forces me to not use him as often as I'd like to use a utility INF. By the way he's 25 and will turn 26 during next season. He's extremely low risk to be claimed, in my view.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) Not really. A rule 5 pick has to spend a large majority of the season on the active roster, otherwise their roster requirements carry over to the next year. Saladino is supposed to be ready around April-ish, last I saw. So he'll probably be a month behind or so. So carrying him isn't probably a big risk in that way. But I just find it hard to believe any team would select Tyler Saladino at all, and certainly not when he's going to miss at least a month and has had TJ surgery. He's a DFA guy for me, I just don't see any significant claim risk with him.
  7. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) Last I saw, Hahn expected Saladino to be ready by spring training and if he is injured, it makes it that much easier for a team to hide him. I don't really seen anyway they protect a fourth catcher unless one of the current three is traded. Davidson is already on the 40 man roster. Nate Jones coming off the DL will eat that final roster spot, so the Sox will need to be a little more creative with the roster if they are going to participate in FA. The fact that Smith is in the AFL tells me, among other things, they are trying to make a 40 man decision on him. Or looking to see if someone wants him in trade. Either way, I think they are giving serious thought to protecting him. Remember, this is a guy who last offseason they put in that hitting camp in Florida with a handful of other prospects, almost all of whom were top names in the system from the batting side. And he's only had a stronger year in AA since.
  8. Tim Anderson will be the Sox rep at the Bowman Scout Hitting Competition, which is sort of the opening ceremony for AFL, on Saturday night.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) The CDC has put out several alerts with detailed procedures and links to more information over the past few months. These include procedures for recognizing symptoms, treatment and quarantine responses, how to deal with contaminated biological waste, and lots of other stuff. The CDC isn't allowed to come in and take over every hospital in the country to make sure they listen. Well good, glad they have done that.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) Even then, per the CDC guidelines, testing isn't necessarily indicated. It would depend on the type of contact/exposure, severity of the illness, lab findings and possible alternative diagnoses. edit: which probably demonstrates a substantial flaw in their current guidelines. Per that other person I quoted, CDC wants to handle all Ebola testing themselves right now. Because of that, they need to find guidelines so that everyone who's been to Africa within the previous three weeks and goes to the hospital isn't being tested for EBV. I don't know how quick and expensive that testing is. Not just that CDC insists on testing themselves. If a person has just travelled from a country that is an epicenter for an outbreak of something like this, they need to have bulletin-updated protocols sent to hospitals to override previous procedure. That should be obvious.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 10:48 AM) Damn Darwinism. It's not about the fact that earth and all the ecosystems will adjust. Of course they will. Wanting to protect the environment is not really about "saving the earth" like the green crowd tries to make it. That's one of the biggest mistakes being made, constantly, by that movement. What they should be arguing, which is more to the point, is that the earth will be just fine - the question is what the earth will do in response to what we're doing. It's like one large, incredibly complex living thing. The more you do to it, the more it responds, and that generally isn't a good thing for humans.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 08:10 AM) I read that he was not symptomatic during his flight. But can someone carrying it, without yet having outward symptoms, still transmit it? Hemoragic fevers work fast, really fast. On the one hand that's a good thing historically, because the disease tends to blow itself out in short order when an outbreak occurs. But it also means someone can become a transmitter pretty fast - I just don't know if it happens before outward symptoms or not.
  13. Lots of talk lately about various stats, and whether or not the small samples we've seen of the rookies and prospects means anything. And over the years, people often ask the FutureSox folks how we evaluate or rank prospects. This is how. It's all laid out there for everyone now. Any thoughts? Anyone out there a purist about a certain way of evaluating talent? Would you balance things differently than we lay out in that post?
  14. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 04:37 PM) When do fall ball games start? October 7th. Here is the preview we wrote up for it (though we need to update it to show Basto instead of Ravelo).
  15. QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) Which other baseball GM has had a major motion picture made about him, starring Brad Pitt, no less! WTF difference does that make? Regardless of whether or not you agree with the approach, the reason Beane was set to film was that he was among the leaders in doing something unique and difficult - he changed the way front offices looked at the value equation. Hell, more specifically, what he did was actually make prolific use of a value equation at all. He (and a few others) changed the game. He may not be a wonderkind or superhero, but then no one here is saying he was either. Except the straw man you keep pointing to.
  16. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 06:43 PM) On job training? Ah, thank you.
  17. QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) well robin had 2 very difficult yrs of OJT and next yr may the yr he kind of put it together. the problem with this quagmire is, the sox is not going to get rid of him, we as fans has to hope for the best the only recurring excuse is / was the sox is rebuilding. now Hahn is throwing Robin a curve here stating the sox will be competitive next yr. OJT?
  18. Oh Buddy. I like Montas a lot too, but some of the stuff Bell says about certain prospects is outlandishly positive.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) I think you will see him converted to a reliever soon. That's what I brought up before, and that's another likely scenario. But his control issues make that dicey as well. His stuff lends itself to relieving, but he needs to throw strikes more consistently.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) Don Cooper clearly doesn't think much of Rienzo on the mound. I do doubt they just let him go, but it wouldn't be too surprising. I think it's more likely he is a trade throw in. I could see him being a minor league deal guy, in exchange for some other broken prospect.
  21. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) Rienzo Taylor Thompson Raul Fernandez are also DFA candidates. Rienzo I think they keep around and make him a reliever. Thompson they can probably leave exposed, he's got some Rule V claim risk but not a lot and he's not a huge loss. So he may get DFA's. Raul Fernandez I get the impression they like, so I'd be he stays on.
  22. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Updating this thread as the season has wrapped up, the Sox have 42 on the 40 man roster as Jones and Paulino will need to be reinstated after the post-season Free Agents Lindstrom Konerko Team Option Paulino $4M or $250K buyout Non-tender candidate Belisario DFA possibilities Maikel Cleto Jared Mitchell Frank De Los Santos Michael Taylor Players that need to be protected on the 40 man roster Kevan Smith Rangel Ravelo Tyler Saladino Francellis Montas 2015 Roster C Flowers 1B Abreu 2B Sanchez SS Ramirez 3B Gillaspie LF Viciedo CF Eaton RF Garcia DH Davidson/Wilkins* UTL Semien BE Phegley BE Sierra BE Wilkins/Davidson* SP Sale SP Quintana SP Noesi SP Danks SP Carroll* RP Petricka RP Webb RP Putnam RP Guerra RP Bassitt RP Surkamp RP Veal* *Positions to upgrade in FA or via trade Ravelo and Montas will, IMO, definitely be protected. I think Smith probably will too - he's basically a year more advanced than Nieto was when he was selected, and catching talent is super-thin across baseball, so he's a selection risk. Saladino won't even be healthy for the beginning of the season so he won't be protected and won't need to be. FDSL and Mitchell could all be passed through and I wouldn't be concerned about anyone taking them in the MLB phase of Rule V, so those two are likely to be assigned off the 40. Taylor showed he's likely competent as a 4th OF, but I doubt the Sox keep both him and JorDanks - so I'd say one of them will have a 40 man slot and the other won't. Cleto has run his course with the Sox, I would guess he gets DFA's. So that's 2-3 guys who they will protect, and at least 3 maybe 4 guys who will come off. Leaves likely 1 open slot for any potential pickups. I'm also not sure they keep Guerra around. And I'm 90% certain they won't have Veal on the OD roster. Open question - does Davidson need protection? I'm not sure if he does or not, but if he does, they will definitely protect him.
  23. We did hitters last week (see that thread). This week is starting pitchers. Thoughts? Lots of the same names on multiple lists. Montas had one heck of a year, when he was actually pitching. Any names on there surprise you?
  24. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Sep 29, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Did Hahn spend the WSox entire International player signing allotment this year? I don't think anyone knows that, outside the club. You can add up the bonuses for the 4-5 big ones that were announced last July and see how much headroom is left, but the little bonuses aren't published officially as far as I know. So it's kind of a question mark.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 26, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) I haven't given up on Davidson because I don't think his skillset deteriorated, he was just plain awful this year. I've given up on Johnson because if his stuff is where it was last year then he's just not a good pitcher. I don't think anyone would argue his stuff was good this year. The question is why, and no one seems to know. But when a guy's stuff just disappears like that, I'm not ready to say he's just not good. There's likely an explanation. And if it is something that can be addressed, I like his chances of contributing.
