OK, there are 8 guys still not signed at this point. Here is a quick look: 12 (363) Tyler Shryock: His tweets indicate he is about to start his pro career, so he is probably signed or soon will be. 13 (393) Daniel Hayes: Still playing in CWS, can't sign yet 17 (513) Joey Wagman: No indications on him yet 19 (537) Adam Engel: Still playing in CWS, can't sign yet, might be a signability issue 33 (993) Octavio Rodriguez: True signability issue, this would be a big get 34 (1023) Tyrell King: No indications on him yet 39 (1173) Wolfie Tash: No indications on him yet, hit very well for Venice HS, might be a signing issue? 40 (1203) Ronell Coleman: Sox academy grad, not likely to sign, Vandy commit

32 of 40, all top 11, signed so far. 2 are still playing, another one is never going to sign, and another couple are hinting they are about to. The list of real question marks is quickly dwindling.

No way I'd put Semien or Johnson above Sanchez - yet. And I've been a vocal Semien fan for a while now. Slow it down a bit, we're halfway through his season as the one of the youngest players in ALL OF AAA. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2013 -> 09:54 AM) Hey NSS! QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jun 16, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) How about Brent Tanner catcher bats left handed but hitting only .346 He's a 25 year old in A ball, he spent three seasons in rookie ball despite being a college draftee, and that .346 average comes in a whopping 16 games. He's not even starting on the teams he plays on, unless there are injuries. You have to be careful just taking a player, position, and batting average and trying to make something of it. There are probably at least 6-7 catchers in the system that are better prospects (off hand but not in order: Phegley, Blanke, Smith, Ayala, Barraza, Gonzalez, Marjama), and this is not exactly a system loaded with catching talent.
-
1. Erik Johnson 2. Courtney Hawkins 3. Trayce Thompson 4. Carlos Sanchez 5. Tim Anderson Also considered Phegley and Semien, who I think are in the 6-10 range. My personal view right now, post-draft, is that the system is still quite weak in elite talent... but that the 6-15 range has gotten stronger.

I doubt they release Mitchell during this season. In fact they probably give him 2014 too, to figure it out. But he sure does look like a lost cause offensively at this point.

Sox pickup Rockies minor league player

Rookie league filler. Think of it us trading Steve to WSI. -
QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 12:55 PM) Only Hawkins and A's SS Addison Russell were high schoolers started in High A from last years draft. Both are struggling, but Russell is seeing better results. It was an aggressive promotion and frankly, not sure if it was warranted. I don't see how a demotion doesn't solve anything. With that said playing him every other day does NOTHING to further his development. Hawkins needs reps. He's certainly not keeping someone better from playing considering how awful this system is. Totally disagree. He was playing twice a week before, now he's every day. If you make it 4 days, he's still getting a ton of in-game time... but what he really needs is attention. Coaching attention. In addition to game action. And he needs time to watch (videos, and games), and to think. And I agree with this as well... QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) I think he's just as ready for that as he is rookie ball pitching or Low A pitching. AA is a different story, but I don't think we'd see a different story in low A. Let him play against guys who are developmentally equal to him (approximately) and the most talented of the bunch. If he repeats High A next year, it really is not a big deal. He gets beat with breaking balls and anything inside right now, which is a terrible combination, and would be exploited at any professional level.

QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=recchi001mic Signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 7, 2013. ... Signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on June 16, 2010. That's Mike Recchia. SS2K5's post you quoted was for Jacob Sanchez.

QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) He had real nice stats in the couple years he spent in the minors, as a reliever, then he had really nice stats as a starter in the Frontier League. I don't see anything saying he was in the minors. He pitched in the Frontier (Independent) in 2012 and now 2013, but I don't see anything else. Where are you seeing this?

Demoting him solves nothing. The key for him isn't just getting his feet under him against easier competition - that accomplishes nothing in his case. He needs serious work on the swing AND the pitch recognition. That will be the case in rookie ball too, and that may even be a problem because it could allow some bad habits to be reinforced. He sure as heck doens't need more confidence either, he oozes that, probably too much of it. I think you keep him right where he is for right now, but my suggestion is... sit him every other game. On those days, he works alone with the coaches in the cage, doing any kind of drills they can think of to work on mechanics and recognition. Then in the fall, send him to the instructional-level league in Arizona, with much the same approach. For 2014, start him wherever you see fit, but no lower than Kanny. And I am still pretty optimistic. He's got incredible bat speed, huge athleticism, and a strong arm. And putting up the XBH he is as a 19 year old against High A pitching, by the way, is almost as uncommon as striking out half the time.

8 of the top 10 are signed, and the Sox appear to have a few hundred thousand dollars in overage to play with.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2013 -> 12:33 PM) It would also devastate the Chinese economy. I think you have the causality backwards, but yes, by proxy they would occur together. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 11:03 AM) 2 hours even QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 11:36 AM) IMDB says 107 minutes. That's an hour and 47 minutes. Maybe the end of the world occurs at 1:47, and the next 13 minutes are just a black screen.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 10:48 AM) Upon learning his personal story, I was surprised he was originally labeled a tough sign. Apparently single mom has stretched to support him, you'd think he would want to get her off the hook ASAP -- of course, by all indications he will be doing just that shortly. He said almost right away he was headed to Chicago this weekend to sign, and he already is tweeting about his assignment (which he said is the "A ball" team). If he means Kanny, that is a tough first assignment for a high schooler. Anyway, he's not a tough sign, I think he'll be easy. And I am still not sure what JVS meant by "in the fold", I asked him for clarification, didn't hear back. I don't think it means they have all signed yet, just that they are all either signed, agreed to terms, or about to.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 12:30 PM) That is why I made the statement that I made. Sox do this way too much. Did you not read the post you replied to? They do it no more than anyone else. Everyone does it. I happen to agree with you in not liking it, but, stop trying to make it sounds like this is just a Sox thing. It is clearly not.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 28m White Sox' first 10 draft picks in the fold, sources say. Saw that. If they got Michalczewski too, that is big. Hopefully after that top 10 are signed, and the others are offered those lower contracts they are likely to get, hopefully they will have some cash to throw at Octavio. If they could somehow get him too, along with the high end guys and Michalczewski, that would be a huge success.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) Every team does this stuff. The Dbacks drafted a paralyzed kid. Yes they do, it is not a Sox-specific thing. But I have to say, I don't like it either. Not that it matters much at the 38th round pick. The only one that really got me pissed off was drafted KW Jr, in the 6th f***ing round, when he wasn't even on the board for other teams. That was just insulting to a lot of people.

Based on all the info we've compiled from various sources, we have 11 guys (at least) signed, and a handful about to. Draft Tracker on the FS site updated.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 11, 2013 -> 08:49 PM) Bassit ended w/ a helluva start.... 6 1/3 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K. Outside of a terrible May, he is having a fantastic season. He didn't really have a terrible May. He had two terrible starts in May.

QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jun 11, 2013 -> 08:53 PM) Baseball America shows us as signing Nick Parent, 1Bman. Son of our bench coach?? Yes he is, but.. we actually signed him? Goofiness.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 11, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) They're going to have a difficult finding 3 position players that really deserve to play in Arizona. Micah Johnson would be the obvious choice right now, and it would benefit Walker or Thompson as well. Carlos Sanchez, maybe. Perhaps DeMichele or Semien, whichever they feel has the highest upside. You'd love to have one guy in the AFL every season that you felt had a shot at being an MLB All-Star someday. Johnson is still in A ball - he isn't going, unless he's promoted between now and then. Semien is an obvious choice. Ravelo maybe, to see what they have there. Walker perhaps. It isn't about "deserving" anyway - it is about the reasons you send someone. Those reasons include: specific development needs, or being a marginal prospect and they want to challenge them, or lost development time during the season. And it is pretty early to even guess who falls into those categories by September.

Hawkins may go to the developmental league in AZ in the fall - the AFL for lower level guys. But I doubt he goes to AFL proper.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 11, 2013 -> 10:19 AM) I for one would love the pull back of that relationship. Get the manufacturing back home. There are negative consequences to that, if they sell off strong enough. Flooding the market with US Treasury instruments will be a detriment to government budgeting and spending, among other effects. -
Great to see Hawkins improving, but let's cool the jets on promotions. That guy should stay at High A for the balance of the season, as far as I'm concerned. Have him keep lowering the K rate, focus more on contact. There's a crowd of OF's from AA up anyway, and again, Courtney is 19 years old. Slow it down.
