Daniel Webb, RHP Born 8/18/1989 in Paducah, KY 6’3”, 210 Throws: R Bats: R OVERVIEW Daniel Webb was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the 2010 draft, as a 19 year old out of Northwest Florida State College. The White Sox acquired him (along with Myles Jaye) from Toronto in exchange for Jason Frasor prior to the 2012 season. Webb is a fireballer who was starting primarily in the TOR organization, with mediocre results. He is now a reliever, and in that role has increased his velocity from low-mid 90's to upper 90's and has touched 100, with the results to match in 2013. FutureSox rated him just outside the Top 25 Top Prospects prior to the 2013 season. PERSONAL/PRE-COLLEGE NOTES Heath High School, Paducah, KY COLLEGE Pitched for one season for NWFSC as their #1 starter, posting a 4.93 ERA and striking out 47 in 62 innings. SIGN/DRAFT Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the 2010 Amateur Draft, signed for $450,000 (over-slot). MINORS During his first two years in pro ball, in the TOR system, Webb was primarily a starter. He tended to give up a lot of hits, struck out 6-7 guys per 9, and walked a few more than he should have (but nothing too bad). In 2012 in the Sox system, he started a few games, but was converted to relief for the majority of the season at Class A Kannapolis. In 2013 though, he has really broken through. The relief role has allowed him to increase his velocity to upper 90's and touching 100, and the results were so dominant in High A Winston-Salem (15 IP, 10 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 19 K) that he was quickly promoted to AA Birmingham. In one outing so far there, he pitched one inning and struck out the side. He looks like a potential fast-mover at this point. Sox setting up for the end of the Konerko era?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 8, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) It has everything to do with standings. Sox fans know what time it is. Last year showed that, no, it does not have everything to do with standings. That is a factor, but not the only one. This team is terrible and is doing better than last year's squad... why? There are other factors at play. It would be nice if it were that simple, but it isn't. -
Johnson is mortal. He had a 1.50 ERA. He had a bad start, I wouldn't be concerned. It wasn't likely he was going to continue the AA season with a mid-1's ERA.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 8, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) Sorry for the oblivion, but what is DSL? Instructional league I assume? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 8, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) Dominican Summer League. Right. Specifically, it is a feeder league for LatAm prospects. In some cases, players cannot yet come to the US because, I think, they need to be 18 years old or something like that. Other players are just not ready yet, or won't ever be, for affiliated Rookie ball in the States. They start play at the beginning of June.

Sox setting up for the end of the Konerko era?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 8, 2013 -> 10:56 AM) If this team really proves to be as bad as people think, we aren't going out and adding top free agents. That doesn't even make any sense. If this is really a 90 loss team, we are getting bunches of minor leaguers from other teams for our vets. We aren't adding a McCann, Utley, or anyone else making 8 figures annually. I think people are throwing around those names for 2014, not this season. I'd hope. And with the money freed up, I think an FA pickup or two are definitely possible. -

By the way, with all the talk of McCann, just want to throw out there... Phegley has a .318/.402/.588 line and a reasonable K rate down in Charlotte this year. He's been healthy for a few years straight now (which was the biggest concern with him), and reports are that his defense has improved a lot. He's 25, but this is a guy who was a 1st round Supplemental pick. Don't count him out as a possibility for 2014 if he keeps this up. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 8, 2013 -> 09:43 AM) Why? If Danks comes back, we're already sitting on 6 major league caliber starters, and that's without even considering that there seems to be more on the way in the minors. Looking at potential names for 2014 rotation: Sale Peavy Danks Quintana Santiago Johnson Axelrod That's 7 guys, and that isn't including guys who may emerge as the season goes on like Castro or Snodgress. I'd tend to agree that the Sox' best assets for trading are rotation arms, and they may need to look at trading one of them (or even two potentially). -
Winston-Salem is at 10am (Central time), Blough (pushed back) is likely starting. B-Ham starts at 10:30am, Erik Johnson goes Charlotte is 5:35pm, Zach Stewart Kannapolis is Off

QUOTE (danman31 @ May 7, 2013 -> 10:32 PM) I'm not sure we'll see all of those guys in the DSL. They don't always suit up right away. Hard to tell. Some of them I read articles about last year in a mini-camp, and some might repeat that again. We'll see when the rosters come out.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ May 7, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) How bad/good is this Seth loman guy? Six year minor leaguer currently 27 years old. Big power, draws some walks and gets on base, strikes out a lot. K numbers improved slowly in past few years, but up again this year to high 20's in %. Hits lefthanded. Big dude, no speed, defense is decent from what I've seen. He's not really a prospect, but he's a good guy to have at AAA in case your 1B/DH types get hurt. He's not a long term plan for a major league club that wants to compete. -

Plan A sure looks like Konerko gone, Dunn and Viciedo at 1B/DH, and hopefully one of the OF prospects is good enough to come up in 2014. But that last part is looking sketchy, at least at this point. I don't see how the McDade acquisition has anything to do with any of this. Looking at McDade's career, scouting reports... he's just not a real candidate at this point. He is not another Gillaspie by any stretch. I think he's bench filler for Charlotte. Loman in AAA isn't a likely long term solution either, he's just injury insurance on PK and Dunn. Wilkins is repeating AA and not doing that great. Dan Black is raking in AA, but he's still a long shot, and we'll know if he is at all in the future plans if you see him starting in AAA this season at some point. Even then I'm not sure he's looked at that way. Overall the 1B depth in the Sox system is severely lacking, at least for 2014 purposes. This picture gets a lot better if Mitchell, Thompson and/or Walker can start putting it together this season and hit well in AAA. -
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 7, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) Anyone know if there are any prospects on the DSL team? Any new international signings either? Over the past handful of years, who from the DSL team has made it to play full season in the states? Olacio and a list of others have come from DSL in recent years. One guy who looks interesting that is new to full-season this year is Braulio Ortiz, age 21, with Kanny. He's been hitting low-mid 90's and striking out a good number of batters. But the Sox really started spending bigger in LatAm in the past year or two. Some guys to watch in DSL this upcoming season: RHP Luis Martinez signed for 250k in '12, he's 6'4" and at age 17 was already throwing 88-91 touching 92. RHP Victor Done signed last August, at age 16, has hit 91 already and has a solid delivery per BA. 3B Luis Castillo signed for 450k as a 16 year old in July, plus power potential. SS Johan Cruz also signed for 450k at 16, was said by scouts to be one of the best skill-infielders in DR at that age. OF Hanlet Otano signed last year at age 16 as well, he's already 6'4" and 200 pounds, has plus power potential. So there are some guys to watch, definitely. Much more so this year than in years past.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) Coming from Toronto, I would say this has Marco Paddy written all over it. Makes sense.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 7, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) When I saw him pitch in early April he didn't throw side-arm, must of converted very recently. I did notice he hit 90 and that his pitches had good movement though. Here's an MiLB article about him, including that transition.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) Tommy Viola @Tommy_the_V 12m Two more roster moves today... INF Josh Bell was released and INF Mike McDade was claimed off waivers and optioned to @KnightsBaseball That frees the roster spot. Still doesn't make much sense to me, Bell was playing mostly 3B I think. My only theory is, they want McDade as just a bench guy, and don't want Wilkins or Black on the bench at this point. I just don't see how, looking at the body of their careers to this point including scouting reports, they would think McDade would be better than Black.
-
Sox claimed Mike McDade on waivers from CLE. Um... why? Why not promote Black? No need for filler in Charlotte, already plenty of that there, Loman is the insurance on Konerko/Dunn and Gallagher is raking and plays 1B. Black is hitting in BHam and is stuck behind Wilkins. Weird.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) That's the kind of thing that won't work at the major league level. Sounds a little bit like Lance Johnson's basestealing strategy...."Lance on point," minus the marching in place mechanism. You'd think if he was basically pacing...that eventually a pitcher with a good pick-off move could catch him off balance or on the wrong foot and it would be hard for him to get back to the bag. Probably. But he's still raw, in A ball, and experimenting. There are guys in the majors who use walking leads of sorts. I think the thing to take from this is, not only is Johnson very fast, he's also a smart baserunner. That could take him a long way, as long as he can get on base. If he can't get on base then he's just Gary Redus (thought you'd like that reference caulfield).

QUOTE (Andrew @ May 7, 2013 -> 12:56 AM) Man, this team is s***ty... So bad they just went 3-3 on the road against two of the currently-best teams in the league. Despite making an array of defensive, baserunning and managing mistakes. Just sayin'.

There's a guy who puts a lot of videos up for both Kanny and W-S (and other SAL and CAR league teams) on YouTube, FS talks with him regularly. He was there yesterday for the double-header. I'm very curious to see the video on Cose - he converted to a sidearm delivery, scrapes 90, his stuff moves a lot, and it has been working for him. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2013 -> 08:46 PM) Kyle Hansen with a great outing Good to see him in action. They talked about wanting him to start, eventually. I'm guessing he's in relief for now, as he adds/refines secondary pitches. Should likely be starting by OD next year or sooner, though he may be a reliever in the end anyway. This org likes to have their relievers start sometimes, for their middle years in the system. Saw reports from the game he was 90-94 FB, with a good slider too. QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2013 -> 08:39 PM) Micah Johnson--25 bags. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 6, 2013 -> 09:59 PM) When I saw him play live about a month ago, it wasn't even that he had amazing speed, he had very good speed but was a very smart base-runner. If he continues stealing bags, will he eventually be a Top 20 ChiSox Prospect? If I were making a list now, he is Top 20, but not Top 10 yet. That could change as the season goes on. If he can keep the OBP in the high 300's, with that speed, he has a lot of value. There was an MiLB article up about him yesterday. He does some unorthodox things - uses a walking lead-off, up to a limit, then paces in place. Weird. Seems to work for him, he's 25 for 29 in SB attempts. And one of those CS was a pickoff where he was experimenting with just how far he could take his walking lead.

Leo "The Lip" Durocher would be turning in his grave...

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 6, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) I think Gillaspie is getting too much credit on this board. Show me some RBIs and runs scored. You have to be joking. Or trolling. Gillaspie was acquired during ST in exchange for a lottery ticket A-ball pitcher, and has been one of the best hitters in the lineup. Seriously with this? -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 6, 2013 -> 07:43 AM) Before yesterday Reed had allowed 14 baserunners in 13 innings. Our team is the absolute worst in the league at hitting, but let's spend time criticizing the closer with the 1.08 WHIP. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 6, 2013 -> 08:53 AM) Reed loves to play with fire and he got burned. He needs to learn to let them hit their way on. These are fundamentals. -
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 6, 2013 -> 07:25 AM) I know it appears that Thompson has been off to a poor start this season, and he has if you look at his HR/AVG/OPS numbers, but quietly he has gotten his K% down to 20%. I haven't seen him at all so I don't know how he's looked or how his at bats have gone, but his improved contact rate early on has to be taken as a positive development. Hopefully he can sustain that. Last 10 games for Trayce: .270/.378/.486, 6 BB and 7 K in 43+ PA

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:37 PM) C Bryan Anderson not exactly screaming out for a promotion from Charlotte. We have three guys in Phegley, Miguel Gonzalez and Kevan Smith....hopefully one of them emerges. Phegley's the closest of the group, Gonzalez has the raw tools but has been a prospect/now suspect seemingly forever and Smith is the most intriguing. Gonzalez isn't really a prospect anymore - he isn't even starting, he's playing about 3 days a week, and some of those are late inning replacement instances. But I have been quite happy with Phegley so far.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 3, 2013 -> 04:46 PM) Monthly update... At last note, Dan's knee recovery should put him back on a pitching mound sometime this month. He's down in AZ still, for now. And sure enough, he's been activated for Charlotte.

Q&A with Second Baseman Joey DeMichele
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 5, 2013 -> 07:44 AM) He's never going to put up a big OPS, but if he can put up a high OBP (.395 in low A) and steal a ton of bases (56 total last year), then he can still become a dangerous leadoff hitter. There is a difference between trade value, and org value. I think Walker is worth a lot more to the Sox than he'd get in trade right now. I think there is concern about Walker and making consistent contact, and that's for a guy with no power (yet). I'm not quite as negative on him as danman, and I think he's more intriguing at this point than Mitchell... but I don't think many other teams would want Walker as any sort of main piece for any significant trade - that's all I'm saying. Thompson though, I think could be very appealling to some teams.
