  1. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) Are you really arguing that the 14th amendment needs to be altered or ignored to deny citizenship to children born of non-US citizens because they might work under the table one day? Because if that's the case, half of native born Brooklyn needs to turn in their passports. I'd be OK with changing it to be that children born to people who are in the country illegally do not gain citizenship. Seems pretty fair to me.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) Then the solution is to bring them into the full system, not to turn our backs on them. And I have always agreed with that - having a more sensical program for bringing in people to work and eventually become citizens. That, however, is not the same as saying everyone and anyone can come in at will. Again, I think even you would have to admit that there HAVE to be controls, or the consequences would be dire. Therefore, I wish you would stop speaking in absolutes, and talk in terms of reality - there has to be a line, there have to be controls, so where and how do we implement them?
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:16 PM) NSS, a lot of those things you list are entirely renewable resources...because they're paid for by the people who are already here. There's not just a finite supply of jobs or money or government services...they're paid for and created by the people who are here who choose to advance or cut back on them. Do you really think that for each person coming into the country, that there is a perfect slide in the curve of quantity and quality of those other commodities? Or that it is instantaneous in nature? Further, if people are here illegally, they only pay in PART of the tax regime, if any. So again, they don't push up the other side with perfect efficiency. Therefore there is leakage and weakness economically.
  4. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) Right and what is the purpose of this? To prevent more "undesirable" people from entering the US, from becoming citizens, from turning America into something "they" dont want. The problem I have is that this is nothing more than a pretext for racism. And if you let them have the first step, where does it end? I'm pretty sure you just called me a racist, which is laughable. No, the reason to explore this (at least for me - certainly SOME of these voices in the debate are racist) is simple. Citizenship is this country's single greatest commodity. And the more you flood the country with that commodity, the less value it has, NOT because it means "undesirable" people are here, but because there are limits to the OTHER resources we have. Jobs, government services, water/land/natural resources, money, etc. Just as I have said in here in many ways that you HAVE to be careful with the consumption of natural resources if you want society to thrive, similarly, you HAVE to be careful of the rate at which people are coming into the country to access them. The U.S. is the place more people want to live than anywhere on Earth, far and away. We have something really great going here, even with its flaws. If you just fling open the doors with no restrictions to access and citizenship whatsoever, you will get huge floods of people that will inevitably make life more difficult for everyone here. This is why we have restrictions on citizenship and visitation, just like every country on earth (or close) does. So... since most people would agree that SOME sort of controls must be in place... the debate is not something ethereal and idealistic as you seem to think. What it really is, is deciding where you want that line to be. And all I'm saying is, maybe when deciding to draw that line, you should make life EASIER for the immigrants who do things right, and HARDER for those who don't.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 11:51 AM) take it personal, kap I just think its funny that this is one of those topics where being reasonable, or trying to come up with a positive change instead of going all out one way or the other, seems to be impossible.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 11:31 AM) Because there's more to being american than being born here! you must also be living in the "bible belt", be salt of the earth, christian or Jews for Jesus, and tend to be...well, I'm getting ahead of myself. But, the point is everyone else is just sucking on the teets that the real Americans LITERALLY MILK EVERY DAY. Yes, because that's exactly what I was thinking when I said what I did.
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 10:59 AM) He'd fit in nicely in Kotsay's slot on the 25 man roster. A definite upgrade. His rehab assignment must end by 8/19. So we should know by then, and I am hoping that he does indeed replace Kotsay. I think that's a real possibility too, though Viciedo going down is probably more likely.
  8. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) People should be granted citizenship just because they are born here. People should be able to build a Mosque next to the site of the Twin Towers. (eventhough its not really next to the site) We once were a city upon a hill, where we were the model of free society. But we inch closer to being nothing more than what we allegedly despise. Everyone who is born in America, deserves to be a citizen. But then again I believe the the idea of America was to be a place where those who are persecuted, those who seek a better life, would be free to join whenever they please. I dont agree with immigration quotas, I dont agree with refusing to allow people to come to America to seek a better life. Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" I understand that people want to have advantages and not let other people immigrate here and potentially compete with them for jobs and benefits. But is that not the American way? Are we not capitalists? Do we not believe in competition and that the hardest and best working will rise to the top? To me that is America. And it actually bothers me to see that people can claim to care about freedom, equality, etc. but at the same time do everything in their power to prevent all people from having that. I applaud your post and your passion. But really, I don't think people are seriously discussing changing anything other than the aspect of the rule that allows illegal immigrants to have children here who become citizens. And I don't see how that changes any of what you are fearing will change. Now, if the desire grows to change anything more than that, I might be with you.
  9. QUOTE (D_B_U @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 10:30 AM) I have zero faith in Perkins. Welcome to the board! Are you a Twins fan? I ask because you talk about faith in Perkins. No problem if you are, just curious.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) He's been watching season one of "V" I believe. Heh. I changed my earlier post before you quoted.
  11. Used to fish a lot as a kid. Did a lot of fishing in northern wisco, generally for Musky. Also BWCA/Quetico, which has the most amazing freshwater fishing you can imagine, in terms of how easy it is. You can plunk just about any lure down and get a fish in short order. BWCA and Quetico combine to be about 5 million acres of roadless wilderness, covered by thousands of lakes that see no motor boat traffic of any kind. So the fishing pressure is very low. You can go for Northern Pike (if you want lunkers), Walleye (best eating freshwater fish), largemouth, smallmouth, lake trout in deep water, a whole variety of pan fish and chubs, and even obscure stuff like sturgeon and paddle fish. In Quetico I once found a little bay that had the most absurd largemouth bass population I've ever seen. Went there two different years, both times caught a stringer full of largemouth in the 7 to 10 pound range, which is just ridiculous. Also caught a 30+ pound northern once, lots of walleye, a couple nice lakers... the list goes on.
  12. I agree with ChiSox_Sonix on this one. Its really not as crazy as it seems to ask the question, does anyone and everyone born here automatically get citizenship? I don't see how that's a bad discussion to have.
  13. QUOTE (qwerty @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) How much worse would he have to be against the twins to be considered horrible? That 's a pretty damn empty .260. Would you agree pierzynski has been horrible at the plate this season? His career against the twins and this very season are pretty damn similar. Whether you agree or not, he has been horrible, with seemingly no sign of turning it around. There is a difference between horrible on a full year - and AJ has been damn near that - and horrible in a team split. Look at any player, including AJ, and you see team splits all over the board. AJ for example shows an OPS of .578 against TOR, lower against ATL. He is in the .800's or above against 8 or so teams. When I think "horrible" in a small sample size split, I think like .400 OPS or something. But whatever, its terminology. Are you telling me it makes more sense to sit him against Baker than Liriano?
  14. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) AJ has been horrible against the Twins in his career. .260/.288/.639, 4 HR, 21 RBI in 328 abs. Also, while his BA against Baker is good, he hasn't hit for any power whatsoever and he hasn't taken a walk against Baker so he really hasn't been that productive against him. That's weird, I thought he was better than that against MIN. Looks like he was awful against them last year, good in 2008. You also have a strange definition of "horrible" in the world of splits. In any case, I'd rather he play than Castro against Baker. The idea isn't that he's necessarily better than Castro on a split, so much as how he splits in all three games. Baker he hits, Liriano he's awful against - and Castro hits LH really well. Therefore, to me, it makes a lot more sense to play Castro in the Liriano game than this one.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) The scary thing? Castro has an .862 OPS against righties this season, which is also vastly better than AJ. (it's 1.209 against lefties). However, AJ happens to hit Baker at a .304 clip. Further, he tends to do well against MIN. I'd rather have seen AJ today.
  16. Just saw the email from yesterday. Have to pay by 9/7 to get them, and to keep your seat location for next year. Fortunately we're full seasons, so we get all games, in our same seat location as regular season. Sure hope we get to use a bunch.

  20. QUOTE (beckham15 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 11:42 AM) On my way to chicago now! So far I am 1 for 1 on games this year! Go Sox! Does anyone know what the weather is over that a way? I was checking the weather channel and I saw there may be scattered thunderstorms.... Its August in Chicago, so its pretty much the same every day - 80's +/- with a 30% chance of storms. Roll the dice.
  21. OK, I'll do it. *cough* *cough* been a while... GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
  22. I'm torn. I really can't stand Manny, he's one of those few players I wish nothing but failure on. But damn does this team need a real bat. Probably doesn't matter, because he wouldn't likely fall all the way to the Sox via waivers.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) 41st rounder- Sam Phippen, RHP signed Assigned to Bristol I wonder why a 41st rounder would have taken so long.
  24. Small plane crash in Alaska, former Senator Stevens may have been on board. No confirmation of that yet, no word yet on survivors.
