  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) Oh man, with this sort of left wing violent hate speech, we should expect all kinds of murders to be committed. http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/tim-graha...okes-about-shoo I had never even heard of Ed Schultz before now.
  2. QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 08:01 PM) Until I create an account for him on FS, lol. I took that out, upon seeing it again it sounds bad. Sorry NSS. Eh, no worries, I'll respond to you directly on the FS login thing.
  3. So this gets more interesting. According to this article on the Trib site, the word they are hearing from IOC folks over there is that two big reasons for the shaft of Chicago are not about Chicago at all: one is IOC being pissed at the USOC, the other is Rio manuevering to convince people in an "anybody but Chicago" campaign. So, Chicago got screwed by politics they can't control on one hand, but also got out electioned on the other. Also of note, many of the IOC members were themselves shocked to see Chicago go out in the first round. Interesting.
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 03:36 PM) Good riddance. I think its hilarious how surprised people are that we didnt get it. You mean you believed the US and chicago media that Oprah and Obama were going to put us over the top? Who would have thought! The same sentiments are being echoed in the local news stations of Tokyo, Madrid and Rio during the entire process as well. Do you think those news stations and papers were talking about how great the lakefront in Chicago is? If you read the thread you posted in, at least some of it, you'd see it wasn't so much surprise we didn't get it. It was surprise we were eliminated first, which NO ONE I have spoken to would have guessed.
  5. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) Doesn't count. Neil is just making a point of using every weapon in the percussive arsenal on that one. The tuned temple blocks are my favorite on that one though. Why doesn't it count? He used it. It works for what he is doing there. Using it any more than that would be cheesy.
  6. QUOTE (vandy125 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 03:29 PM) Insurance companies favor reform as well, just not the type that will end their business. What would you spend for the survival of your industry or on something that heavily involves you? Would you just sit on the sidelines and watch? End their business? Not a chance. That is pure B.S., and it isn't even the reason they are lobbying. But obviously, they'd rather that any public or base insurance option go through them instead of the government. Makes perfect sense, and THAT is why they are lobbying.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:39 PM) The Guardian pegs the amount spent by the health care industry so far lobbying against Health Care Reform as $380 million. And its sort of funny, because its really only one part of the health care industry they are actually lobbying for - insurance companies. All the actual health professionals favor reform, and a public option.
  8. QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) There was a Hudson question in chat. Matt Forman said he needed 46.1 innings to qualify for SAL consideration. That would have him eligible for AA and just missing the cut for High-A, though he said he would be in the Carolina League. Also said Hudson would be in consideration for top 3. Nice. Any other Kanny questions yet?
  9. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) Perhaps. Further review is warranted. Start with the track "The Rhythm Method" on the "A Show of Hands" album.
  10. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) Every use of a gong in a rock recording is unnecessary and gratuitous with a single exception: Bonham's gong five measures into the "What Is and What Should Never Be" outro is totally appropriate and makes that track the transcendent rock anthem it is. Gongs at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody and Dream on? Meh. Discuss. Neal Peart uses it, single strike, at the end of some of his drum solos. Acceptable.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:37 PM) 1st round - Madrid 28 Rio 26 Tokyo 22 Chicago 18 2nd round - Rio 46 Madrid 29 Tokyo 20 Final - Rio 66 Madrid 32 Wow, very close in the first round, and Chicago's votes all appear to have gone to Rio in the 2nd.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:28 PM) Good ol' Ritchie.... http://chetchitchat.wordpress.com/ Lots to not like about Richie, but honestly here, I do feel for him a bit.
  13. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) It's not cheap. It's like 60-70 bucks I think. I almost registered once but figured I could fidn enough of what I wanted for free. I wonder where Hudson will be mentioned? He made most of his appearances at W-S right? Cuz he ought to be mentioned somewhere. I was wondering too, but since he's on the major league club, they may not mention him at all.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) 21 straight months of job losses. 9.8% unemployment, and the talk around the markets is quickly getting much darker. Yeah, this is kinda what I've been figuring, and predicting here - a correction late this year (maybe a bit earlier than I thought) as unemployment continues to flirt with 10% on either side and the special programs expire, followed by a small bounce early next year as there is less foreclosure and undersale fat in the housing market combined with stabilization in consumer spending as that goes down to match the unemployment trend. Then the big question, to me, is late 2010 - I could see it going anywhere from there. And I think its really interesting that the market pundits all agree on something like this in the short term, but after mid-2010, the predictions gap out ALL OVER the place, ranging from big run-ups to huge new dips.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 11:19 AM) Interesting time trend there - each recession in the last few is taking longer to recover jobs.
  16. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) Age might have hurt him. Yeah, he's older, and you are probably right. I personally don't agree though - I am a big believer in what I'd call playing age, not calendar age, especially when you get down to talking about a guy being 21 versus 22 versus 23. Remenowsky played briefly in 2008 after signing, this was his first pro season, and he turned 23 during it so he's not exactly old for A-ball, just a little older than what you'd consider ideal (maybe a year at most).
  17. My theory on the reasons for the elimination, in order of scale (not saying I agree with them, BTW): --Generalized anti-American sentiment in many parts of the world --Weak internal support in Chicago (better than Tokyo's, but well under Rio and Madrid) --Rio's strong need and strong passion for the bid --Bad final presentation that had no focus, no passion, no REASONS why they wanted the games --Concerns over US security and visa issues due to new regulations --Concerns over Chicago's financials (I think this got addressed as time went on, not so much a big deal) --Brevity of Obama's visit
  18. Also, if anyone has a subscription and might be in chat, I'd love to hear about their reaction on the people I listed above. Maybe I should just subscribe. How much is it?
  19. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) Sally League Top 20 is out now. Mitchell ranks 9th and Dex Carter ranks 15th. I don't have a BA subscription anymore, but anyone care to post just the Mitchell blurb. Really looking forward to seeing the AA list. Dex Carter? I thought Bellamy would make it, possibly Nathan Jones (may be considered High A though). And I thought Remenowsky SHOULD make it, but wouldn't.
  20. Holy s***. Not surprised we might have lost, but, seriously shocked we were eliminated first. Lots of thoughts on this, need to roll them around for a while.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:54 AM) Affect I specifically, intentionally, used his words.
  22. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) The Olympics will run way over budget... book it. And they will find a way to pass that along to the tax payers... an no, not just chicago. They will find a way to say "hey, see how it effected all of cook county? Yea, we need you to pay up too!" Daley will use this as yet another power grab. If he can plow over Meigs with no warning or authority, imagine what in can do in the name of the olympics. The latter I can understand. The former, as has been illustrated numerous times, is incredibly unlikely. Even the naysayers are predicting a $4B net gain. They'd have to blow through all of that, AND through the insurance, AND through any additional private funding, AND through the reserve fund. Incredibly unlikely, barring some sort of disaster like a terrorist attack.
  23. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:43 AM) In case anyone wanted to know (and a few people got one name right) Beckham was one of them. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws I have to say, for a rookie who has barely been around, Beckham does have some nice composure and maturity. He took his lumps the right way here.
  24. Just for fun, here are some predictions from.... psychics. Of the three interviewed, 2 say Chicago, one says Rio.
