  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) I'm referring to the fact that the link doesn't work. Its the swear filter. Just replace the asterisks, like with any other link that gets put out there that has an explitive in it. Sort of an unfortunate side effect of the fitler.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 09:04 AM) The last two posts are epic fails. Are you referring to the twitter feed I posted? I thought the last one was hilarious.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 08:33 AM) hey. I haven't seen anyone UNINTENTIONALLY use them incorrectly yet. I probably missed one somewhere.
  4. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 11:45 PM) A patriot? Teddy? You sure you have the right kennedy? Just because he was a Senator doesnt make him a partiot, no matter how many of his views you share. I am sorry for his family over their loss, that is the extent of my respect. The Senate is a better place without him. He should have retired long ago when his health issues sidelined him instead of depriving his constituants of representation, but his ego, and sense of entitlement led him to hang on and miss countless votes and not do his job. Just curious... did you have the same stance on getting Minnesota's junior senator into his chair ASAP, so Minnesotans could have representation, instead of constant and obviously unwinnable appeals from Coleman?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 10:22 PM) I have one request in this thread... please use deficit and debt correctly. Thank you. I haven't seen anyone use them incorrectly yet.
  6. QUOTE (djcollie03 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) While some of you have full season ticket packages those of us with splits - especially those of us in the upper box section - have some serious decision making in the next week or so. By Sept 2, it should be somewhat clear if the team will be in contention or not. I can't imagine, given the economy and the sour taste in many fans mouths right now, that the line will be huge for season tix next year. That in mind, if they appear to be out of it, do you say the heck with paying now - forfeit the seats and then just ask for them next year when you get back? It's not like the seats around me have had the same people in them all year - either no one has season tix or the people that due just move them all the time. Thoughts? I'm a split holder, and our seat location is primo, so no way I am giving it up to chance. Near zero chance we get as good a seats in the same price bracket, since we own pretty much THE best seats in that bracket. But if you seat location is nothing to get excited about, and we're looking doomed on 9/1, then I wouldn't blame you for saying screw it. But one thing you would lose regardless is your seniority - which does have some effect.
  7. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) There's this problem with World War II that makes any sort of reference to that era difficult. The war was so ungodly f***ing HUGE that countless effects can be attributed to any one cause, and often those results contradict each other. It was a unique occurrence that cannot be repeated without cataclysmic repercussions. I guess that's why they called it a World War, huh?
  8. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) are you hoping for poor economic news? He's a trader, so, he might be. Depends on what he trades and how. But I think he was just agreeing with SS2K5. That said, you may note that CKnolls is pretty much always bearish with his posts in here.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) So since you guys are on the subject, earlier today I was looking at Planet Earth on Blu-Ray and wondering if I should get it - I was on the fence but now I think I'll do it. Anyone watched The Universe? I'm really into that kind of stuff. Definitely do it. Also, Richard Attenborough (sp?) may be the only man on earth who can sound elegant saying "the Wild Ass".
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) i want them to do a show investigating that cougar in roscoe village. Good call. We had a whole thread about that on SoxTalk when it happened - the Trib did a nice set of pieces chronicling that cat's journey.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) Again, another sign that we are going to see a double dip in this recession. I'm 50/50 on that, but we'll know more by about January or so.
  12. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 10:35 AM) WASHINGTON (AP) -- New U.S. home sales surged 9.6 percent in July, rising for the fourth straight month and beating expectations as the housing market marches steadily back from its historic downturn. Bargain basement buyers and those seeking the special first time credits (along with some isolated local programs too), all helping this. I almost wish the surge was a little less pronounced though, as this will probably cause a slight dip again early in 2010. Nothing to be alarmed about though. Overall, from everything I am reading, looks like at a national level, we've leveled and have the pieces in place to start climbing back up a bit. The X factor though, is employment. If unemployment stays similar to now for about 6 months, then goes up, (or something akin to this), I think we'll be good. If it gets notably worse (not talking about a few tenths here, I mean more than that), and can't recover in that 6 month or so timeline, then the housing market will stay flat, and spending will too, and we could be in for another overall dip.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) That's all a part of being a Healther. The government has to do it. Gawd I cannot wait until we stop creating one-word-er phrases.
  14. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) The best part is the $25 they make on every invoice, to process the tickets, which is non-refundable. NIce scam there. Yeah, I assume that's Ticketmaster further executing on their monopoly.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 09:20 AM) Unfortunately I don't get Nat. Geo. History and Discovery are usually pretty good, but more and more they're throwing on garbage like Ax Men,Ice Road Truckers, Ice road Loggers, Swords, Deadliest Catch, etc. etc. And the production on their new Clash of the God show is crap, though it'd probably be good otherwise. edit: Yeah, and garbage like Monster Quest. Planet Earth was phenomenal. I can still watch it over and over. We don't watch the serial stuff like deadliest truckers on ice or whatever. Just the actual history bits, and Discovery's nature or science related stuff, same on NatGeo. That's the good stuff.
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....aily-basis.html What did the guy expect? The team hasnt won in over 100 years, spent all this money to get swept in the playoffs twice. You are the big offseason signing that supposed to bring a power lefty bat to the lineup and they traded away a fan favorite to sign him too. 32 RBIs in 104 games. From the day they signed him, I thought he was way too big of a head case to deal with all the pressure there is at Wrigley. Just another log on the fire. The Cubs are crashing and burning in a hurry. And this really needed to be their year, because the future looks bleak - they have a nearly barren farm system, multiple horrid contracts that are basically untradeable, aging star players who tend to get injured even now, young players who are low ceiling guys already at their peak, and a ballpark in dire need of major repairs in the main sections. The Ricketts have bought a cash cow on the downslope from peak. Not a good place to be a buyer.
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 09:06 AM) I actually think History and National Geographic do a great job. I really enjoy those channels We watch those and Discovery a lot at home. In fact I'd say those three, plus Sox games, make up about 90% of our TV time. I also loved those Planet Earth DVD/BD's.
  18. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) Do you guys get refunded if the Sox don't make it to the post-season? Here is how it works. Basically, this is like asking for your season ticket deposit very early. Any unused tickets, that money goes towards your 2010 bill. You can take a pass on the post-season tickets, but then you lose your season ticket account, and you go back to the end of the line if you start over.
  19. If the Stimulus Bill had been written to be much more focused, and we made it a real priority to spend serious money specifically on it, across the board from R&D to tax incentives to loan guarantees to infrastructure construction... the new energy economy COULD be the non-lethal equivalent of WWII. Unfortunately, we are only making a small dent there, and had to spread the money out into eight bajillion different other areas too.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 09:25 PM) Could I just get my info straight from the Democratic committee instead? PBS' stuff, including news shows and in depth features, are currently the smartest stuff out there on TV, by a longshot. Some is liberally biased, but some of it conservatively as well (heck watch any of the evening business report programs in the Chicago market). Point is, no matter where it stands, its just better quality, more in depth news, than anything you can get from the networks or the major TV news outlets currently. The only place it loses out to the majors is in speed to tube.
  21. Eh, they did this last year, they have to - every team remotely in contention does. It sucks having to pay now, but I don't see any other option really. Also, our seats are actually better this year than last. Still not great seats, but, not as bad.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 09:15 PM) A lot of the dealerships are yet to close as well. That's actually what I thought you were referring to - which is why I said already many of those are done. The plant closings have been happening for years BTW, this just continues the trend. Good news for Chicago is, Ford is actually looking to EXPAND their Chicago plant.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 01:31 AM) Yeah, but he has shown the ability to throw out runners. I'm not sure his throw out rate is currently, but it was above 1/3, I believe, about 2 weeks into the season. He does seem to get a lot of pickoffs as opposed to CS so I'm assuming he's accumulated a couple errors from being too aggressive behind the plate. That's a good sign then - I haven't seen his SB/CS numbers much, and milb.com doesn't accumulate them (which is annoying).
