QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) And by the way, northside, I respect how difficult it is to be a mod on this forum and I think you are doing a good job and you are a good poster. But you are incredibly one-sided on who you decide to take issue on. It's heavily slated towards talking down the Obama posters on here. When the conservative posters on here do one of their many personally attacking, offensive posts while crying about what a tough time they are having because of those damn obama supporters, your response is always a neutral, hey it's not everyone, i agree with you on x. When an Obama poster does something that never attacks a conservative poster but usually McCain or a conservative figure in a mocking light, ala AHB or in this case BigSwert, you are quick to ask them to stop. Hm. I don't think that's the case, as I try to call people out on their B.S. regardless of which side its on. For the record, I've had a lot of people on the right tell me quite the opposite of what you are saying - that I am quick to get on GOP'ers but let the lefties go. I like to think that if I get these complaints from both sides, I am probably doing my job right. But I will make sure to keep an eye on my responses going forward. I certainly am not trying to be biased in any way.

GOP - Obama Win Could Lead To Second Holocaust

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) That has been posting style for months when it comes to Republicans, right? I probably just shouldn't post back here and leave this for the next couple of days. I have mostly stayed away from it because it has been so ridiculous and counterproductive, but sometimes it becomes so completely one-sided that SOMETHING needs to be said. This election has been by far the worst cycle I have ever seen. Not only has the top of BOTH tickets just been two faced and nasty, but I have never seen the people at the bottoms levels be so nasty and two faced as well. I know I have been sucked into the mud at times, because I have gotten sick of the most inane stuff not getting challenged. It is probably a mistake on my part, but hey. Remember when the big back and forth happened over the Democratic hate thread? THIS is the EXACT type of stuff that got the bitter feelings started towards it. A person can only here their belief system ridiculed so many times before it pisses them off. The complete lack of respect for anything but one's own point of view from Obama and McCain all of the way down to hear has been by far the most gauling thing about this last two years. It has been just downright embarassing. Oh I completely agree. The extent to which the people on both extremes have gone in this cycle is horrible, and that includes some posts in here. All I was trying to point out was, IMO, there is an important difference between what a candidate and their campaign do, and what their followers do. I do not apply the idiocy of the wingbats to either candidate, because there is nothing good that can come from that. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) Because that's the only reason that Colin Powell endorsed Obama according to several right wing pundits. As I just said in another thread... I am sure there are some whack jobs out there saying that. But you are propogating it.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) Who are these people out there that are saying that if you don't vote Obama you are racist? I can't say I've been hearing that. Eh, I am sure there are some whack jobs saying it here and there. I think its hilarious that its somehow the fault of the evil Democratic party, though. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:41 AM) The Dem party doesn't HAVE to do iot because they have a million columnists and reporters saying it for them. They can just sit back and smile because they have their 'hands clean'. Every day there is some new bozo telling us how if you don't vote Obama you are racist, and it is only because you can't bring yourself to vote for a black man, and how this will set back race relations for years to come. An oBama loss will mean riots in the street due to another 'stolen election', as if they ONLY way he could lose is thru deceit. I will be so glad when this is over. OK, so we blame the actions of various idiots in the media on Obama and the Dems (who have no control over those entities), because they are writing/speaking on their "side" of an issue? That is absurd. And if we want to use that line of logic, then I guess we should also say the same of all the various right wing columnists, writers, radio host, etc. Everything they say is what the GOP wants. Right? -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) Former Nixon and Reagan speechwriter, who must be black, endorses Obama. OK, really, what are you accomplishing by adding these "must be black" clauses to your posts about these endorsements?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:07 AM) How about being told that "they" were going to do everything to "steal" your vote? I don't know, I think people promoting the FEAR of racewars are just as bad as someone promoting the FEAR of racewars. But maybe that is just me. Again, someone show me an instance where a Dem party or Obama campaign entity was out there doing this. It might have happened, I don't know, but I have seen nothing of the sort. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 03:13 AM) I have never voted for a democratic presidential candidate in my life, but cannot vote for John. His choice of Palin was so stupid it is beyond belief. She is probably the hottest chick (her age) in the history of her age. But to be second in command? My god. DUMB choice John. DUMB. Palin needs to host a TV show immediately after the election. Although her voice and you betcha is annoying. John you were a fool picking the hot chick. So dumb. 1. I am not sure the Republican Thread is the best place for this post, but if you are a lifelong GOP'er, I suppose its fine. 2. If you want to post in the Buster, YOU MUST READ, AGREE TO AND POST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IN THE "MUST READ" THREAD. 3. What possible relevance does it have to discuss Palin being a "hot chick"?

QUOTE (farmteam @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 12:25 AM) Wait, what? Maybe I'm forgetting the U.S. History I learned in high school, but Federalism is a strong centralized government, so if we were giving more power to the federal government, how would that be anti-federalist? No, federalism is a strong adherence to the concept of a federal model - which is to say, strong individual states with a relatively weak central government. Its a federation of states. I actually took a college class called "Federalism and Federation".
-
OK so, for those following closely enough... who will win each of the key states, and of course, the election? Feel free to add your individual predictions here as to what states each candidate will take. Here are mine, to get it started... OF THE CONTESTED STATES... McCain takes: MT, ND, MO, NC, FL, VA, IN Obama takes: OH, PA, IA, WI, MN, CO, NM, NH MT, MO and VA will be the closest races. This ends in a final result of: Obama 298, McCain 240

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) If he allows all the Bush tax cuts to expire it will be the largest tax increase in history. Certainly not a 'tax cut' like the media/obama campaign are telling voters. His tax cut isn't even a tax cut, it's a $500 giveaway. He has also proposed massive spending increases and his only answer to "How exactly are you going to pay for this?" is tax rich people. If I had to make a prediction, which I will right now, it is that Obama allows the tax cuts to expire for a large number of people, not just those making $250k or more. However the media and Obama will refer to it as merely a rate adjustment and Obama fans will be here arguing with us about how it's not a tax increase. Meh, you can argue whether or not its technically an increase if those lapse. Whatever, its an increase IMO. But you have to remember, even with a near-super majority in Congress, Obama will not have the free reign people seem to fear he will. I'll be surprised if any increase in tax occurs, or that the Bush tax cuts expire and go back up, for anyone under 200k-ish.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 08:06 PM) There's actually a great deal of inconsistencies in his tax plan which are well documented and discussed in other threads. I don't need to go to some website and get a 'journalist' to do math for me. I don't disagree on the inconsistencies, some of which are the result of vagueness in the plan. I've seen Obama's plan, and I've seen multiple sites do articles resulting in slightly different results.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 06:04 PM) Richardson said nothing about that being the threshold. Read the quote. The Obama plan has been published, and many sites are there doing the math for you. I wouldn't go and take the words of someone not even in the campaign and take a single number out of context to mean much. That said, I certainly HOPE that Obama doesn't lower that actual threshold that low. I don't think he will. I could turn out to be wrong.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 08:26 PM) Remarkably similar to the people running around saying a McCain win would cause a racewar... don't you think? Damn, I will be glad when the election is over and you quit posting this low brow baiting crap. I haven't seen or heard anything of this sort. Certainly, its not coming from any party organizations that I've seen. Feel free to prove me wrong. But I agree, I'll be glad this election is over so that we can all be spared the pathetic, desperate wingnut attacks we're seeing from both parties. Its been clearly worse coming from the GOP, IMO, but that doesn't mean the Dems have been squeeky clean or anything like it. Much of the reason the GOP stuff has been worse is simple math - they're behind and desperate. The Dems would have their wingnuts come out and do some similar B.S. in the same situation. -
2008 General Election Discussion Thread

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 10:56 PM) As someone who's rooting for Obama, how concerned should I be that McCain is leading in the Zogby one day poll? 1. Since this isn't a national election, the national polls are pretty irrelevant. This is 50 statewide, weighted elections. So its really best to look at the state polls. 2. Zogby is garbage - ignore his polls. 3. if you really want to look at national polls anyway, according to RCP, looking at the NON-Zogby national polls... they range from Obama +5 to Obama +10. 4. Looking at the states in play... only 2 Kerry states are even a possibility for McCain (PA, NH), and he is leading those by 5-10 points and 7-11 points respectively in the latest polls. 5. Of the Bush states in play, Obama leads in NV, NM, CO, IA, OH, VA and NC. And ND, MT, IN and possibly AZ are small McCain leads. -
OK WTF with Those Kickass Division Champ Hats?

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 03:40 PM) I'm talking about the ones they all put on after we won on Black Tuesday. With the big scoreboard-looking front (not unlike the Cubs' same hats, actually). You couldn't get one walking out of the park that night--forget it--so I've been waiting. Now I'm told that was a limited edition hat and no more will be made. I can get one if I get into a sniping war with somebody on Ebay for $60 at minimum. Huh? Why would you make a great hat like that and then deny it to I'm sure thousands of fans who want it? The one offered on whitesox.com is ho-hum. Anybody know any different? BTW hello to all of you; been gone a few weeks. So-so season but that last week was a BLAST! I feel good about next year. A team that was set by most everyone for 3rd or 4th place won the division, despite multiple key injuries. How is that a "so-so" season? -
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 04:40 PM) If he really doesn't know why, he is pretty stupid. he knows exactly why. He's just mocking the claim, making it seem silly. Which he is sort of right about. He knows his tax policy is far more progressive than McCain's, but socialism is a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong stretch to make.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Obama calls people who don't want to pay more in taxes 'selfish', and equates voluntarily giving part of his pbj sandwich in 6th grade to forcibly having to pay more taxes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V3FNh3mAuY No, he says he can't figure out why the GOP calls him a socialist, and that it must have been that PBJ.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 04:33 PM) What this team needs was obviously in May. BALANCE. It needs balance. The offense Williams built was just too one dimensional to sustain any sort of consistency. Luckily, Williams picked the right dimension to have in power. The core is in place. What is needed this off-season is a couple of bookends to surround the power. Yes on all. And I would prefer those bookends to be long on OBP, speed and/or defense, if possible.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) Absolutely not...I could care less about adding speed. I want to add talented players at 2b, 3b, and CF. Like you said, with situational hitting not being a strong suit, I'd rather just add to the mashers we already have. Unfortunately, I'm about 99% sure that our lack of speed is the scapegoat in the minds of KW and Ozzie. It's going to be frustrating when we overpay for a speed guy (just like trading C. Lee for Pods). I personally agree with KW and Ozzie that this team needs more speed. Now, that does not mean I think we should go get a speed demon who is otherwise worthless, nor am I saying that stolen bases are what I'd like to see. I'm saying that improving team speed would be very helpful, I think.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) This is not "Obama's short list". Its people speculating on it, who are not in his decision making process. Also, I'll throw out a dark horse not mentioned... Lisa Madigan, IL AG and former state senate cohort of Obama's, for US AG.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:49 PM) The politico has Obama's "short list" for cabinet positions: Too Long to Post This is not "Obama's short list". Its people speculating on it, who are not in his decision making process.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Taveras is a significantly better player than Owens. He has a great arm in CF, and he knows how to hit with his speed a lot better than Owens does. Taveras gets a crazy amount of infield hits...and Owens has never proven crap in the majors. I just disagree that Taveras is significantly better. Other than the arm, I'd put them on par. And getting JO plus a better arm isn't worth much to me. Again, better to have neither in your starting lineup. I'd be fine with Owens on the bench, though.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) With a .308 OBP. I thought Owens lost a step last year, but was also dealing with injuries. I hate Jerry Owens, but if he somehow did manage 500 AB's, I could see him swiping 40-45, with a terrible OBP, and an even worse slugging. That was basically my thoughts. Owens would probably put up Taveras-like numbers, and we already have him, and don't have to give anything up to get him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) And this is more recent from Barr http://www.bobbarr2008.com/issues/foreign-...-foreign-bases/ To an extent, I agree with what he says here.
