  1. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 12:03 PM) Wrong. I am overwhelmed by the staggering profundity of your artfully crafted retort. Care to expound on this?
  2. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) Its funny nobody, i.e. DEMS, mentions the $92 million dollars Franklin Raines stole or the $26 miilion that Gorleick stole. How about former Veep vetter Johnson? Short-term memory is a b****. And please don't tell me they were not convicted of anything. They ran Fannie into the ground and deliberately misttated earnings to receive higher stock awards. How much value has been lost by this mess? directly and tangentially? Enron is a pimple on an ass compared to Fannie. I call manufactured outrage here. Saying that Dems don't mention some specific persons is no different than saying the GOP didn't mention some other specific persons. No one here came anywhere near defending certain execs because of some party affiliation, and I doubt anyone would.
  3. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Who stopped the bridge from being built? Public pressure, after it was exposed to national scrutiny.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 11:14 AM) well, isnt this just lovely. If you got raped in Wasilla, you had to pay for the tests out of your own pocket. Just lovely. Under Palin, rape victims paid for exam This was already posted and discussed at length (though I do not recall where offhand).
  5. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 09:55 AM) that's part of the lie. She makes it sound like it was sold on ebay... which it wasnt. And she makes it sound liek the idea of putting it on e-bay was her idea... which it wasn. She says she opposed the bridge... she didn't. She says she'll cut spending.... but billed the state for time at home. Like he said, it's the CONSTANT lies. And it's just not her either. The "sex-ed for kindergartners" was a flat out lie. The McCain ad with Wolves lied on both points (that Obama was pushing palin's smears and the 30 people 'air dropped' into Alaska). His constant lies about Obama raising taxes. It's a trend of flat out lies that are DISCREDITED by independent sources that the McCain campaign continues to push even after being called out on them. There's a difference between bending the truth to fit a narrative and flat out lying. Well, let's not go so far as to say CONSTANT. Repeated, though.
  6. QUOTE (mreye @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 09:53 AM) This is exactly what I mean. Classic stuff. This is the kind of thing worthy of our attention now? The jet isn't. The developing pattern of lies is.
  7. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) Except that the Jet didnt sell on Ebay - did you catch that part of the story? That's my point. They lied about it (though in the particular case of McCain's statement, it really may have just been a misstatement). I could care less how they sell their damn jet. I care that their campaign is lying.
  8. You know, I really don't care if Sarah Palin decided to sell the jet on eBay or not. Nor do I care, much, about her standing up to the bridge to nowhere. I also don't care if that trooper gets fired, and in fact, it sounds like he needed to be. These are all very minor things. But what is building up to be an actual issue is the fact that the McCain/Palin campaign is just plain lying about these things. Repeatedly. They are being dishonest about them. And that bothers the hell out of me.
  9. QUOTE (BearSox @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 06:13 AM) Not at all, Kerry Wood's problem is that he threw way across his body, and whenever a pitcher throws across his body with any kind of velocity, injuries are bound to happen. Wood's injury wasn't from getting "overworked" when he was younger, but rather it's all mechanical with him. Wood will develop injuries once again. Not at all? You really don't think that being overused when his body was still developing would have consequences? Every expert I've ever read agrees that, to at least some extent, overuse and overwork of young pitchers amplifies all sorts of problems. His mechanics are a problem as well, but, the overwork WITH bad mechanics makes it that much worse.
  10. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) Is there any reason we couldn't start Adam Russell, let him throw three or four innings? He's been effective generally, and it seems to me underused. We've got a gazillion pitchers to get through the game. Russell hasn't been stretched out more than an inning or two in a long time. And he hasn't been effective anyway. He has a 5.26 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, and batters are hitting .294 against him, and after 30 pitches they hit .375 against him. Not a starter candidate. Broadway makes the most sense right now, or maybe Carrasco.
  11. Haeger signed with the Padres yesterday (see notes at bottom).
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) The Twins have another 10 on the road coming up (as do the Sox too, but they also play KC and get a break before going to Minnesota while the Twins just play 10 straight on the road against pretty good teams) and their's also appears to a bit tougher. If the Sox want any time at all to make up ground lost - and this is assuming they win atleast 1 of the next 2 against Toronto - it will have to come this weekend against Detroit. I still think the Sox find a way in but the lineup is hurting badly right now. It's time for Griffey to find a time machine and go back just 3 years. Love the sig quote. Also, on BP, just remember that the BP formulas showed the Sox with a less than 100% chance of making the playoffs, AFTER they won the division, in 2005.
  13. Since this topic has come up a lot lately in other threads, I thought I'd throw a discussion out there. What do people think of the possibility of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution? Good or bad? What are the pluses and minuses? Should there be a war exemption? If so, how should that be structured, given the current nature of war? I'll provide my position later.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) The constituency favoring a balanced budget has never and will never be anywhere close to as large as the people in that constituency think it is. I find this is true of almost any issue-specific constituency. And on the debate topic, it can make a difference, but it hasn't lately. Kerry stomped all over Bush in the 2004 debates - the after polls showed that clearly, even among Bush supporters - and that did raise Kerry's poll standing a bit each time. But every time, shortly after, the bump Kerry got would fade away.
  15. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 12:37 PM) it's too bad this election is going to get nasty. i actually like Obama and won't really be all that disappointed if he ends up winning (even though i do have issues with some of his economic policies and increases in spending). I agree. As I've said before, I prefer Obama AND McCain over Bush, Kerry, Gore, or most of the other candidates we've had in the general for a long time.
  16. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) looks like McCains convention speech may have won over some independents http://www.gallup.com/poll/110137/McCain-N...dependents.aspx Now THAT is meaningful poll data. Big win for McCain, for the time being.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) Speaking of the bridge to nowhere, guess who all was for it before they were against it? http://cdobs.com/archive/our-columns/obama...o-nowhere,1628/ It was an earmark on another bill - this is why earmarks are bad. Do you vote against a bill that you think on balance is good, if its got garbage earmarks attached? No good call there.
  18. QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) Big surprising response. Don't round up the mileage... Believe it or not, I think some people do NOT understand the reimbursement or payment thing for business travel. Plus, the dynamics are slightly different from company to company. I think the big question really, is just, were these costs of beign at HOME for Sarah Palin? Because I have zero problem with travel reimbursement to/from the capitol, and any business trip expenses she has. I guess my only issue would be if she was at home billing for that time. That's not OK.
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) isnt this kinda like the problem Blogo has with his family living in CHicago and him CONSTANTLY traveling to and from Chicago? If you want to be the reformer who cuts government spending, then actually make the gutsy call and move. I never had a problem with his travel costs. I only had a problem that his method of transportation was a private jet, billed to the state. if you are going to bill the state, then do something a little more efficient for such a relatively short trip - car, or amtrak perhaps.
  20. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home Juneau is the capital. If she is the governor, then I don't see the issue here.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 07:42 AM) eh, when you run millions in debt what's 12 grand? The Wasilla PD ran up millions in debt?
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 02:04 AM) When I read how many doctors were to be in the room for CQ surgery ... ain't no way he'll be back this year. We'll be lucky to get him for spring training. I agree Joe is done. Sad story bout his back. # of Doctors = length of rehab? Interesting. Where did you find this correlation?
  23. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 10:48 PM) Oooo... this is a puzzler. When Sarah Palin was mayor, the Alaska state government passed a law requiring law enforcement to provide rape kits, free of charge. Wasilla was billing alleged rape victims for their rape kit. Who opposed this? Wasilla's Police Chief, the guy that Sarah Palin appointed because he didn't want to shut the bars down before 5AM. http://www.frontiersman.com/articles/2000/05/23/news.txt Her appointee isn't her. Unless she was part of the decision. And while I certainly think that the kits SHOULD be free, this was an unfunded state mandate. $12,000 a year is not a small number for the Wasilla Police Department. Not saying that the chief's refusal was good - it wasn't - but I hope people realize that the money isn't insignificant for a department like that. I don't like Palin, and I think in the long run, she will end up making a lousy VP pick. But unless she herself participated in the decision to charge for the kits, then I think this is a stretch. And before someone says it, a mayor does NOT necessarily have the power to tell the police chief how to do their job. It depends on the way the city/locality's charter is set up.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 03:50 PM) I know, it was slightly hypothetical. But the definition of war has changed so much, who knows if we will ever again be "not" at war. There are various ways you could approach that. Anyway, there is no real support in any Congress for such a thing, so its moot. These guys want to spend-spend-spend (both parties) and not raise taxes. The last thing they want is to be held responsible (with some exceptions of course - talking broadly here).
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) but what is war in the 21st century? Note that I didn't get into specifics - it was slightly off topic.
