QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) Just use a tea filter when you pour the beer. Or. . . make sure you hurt yourself with one of the recalled bottles and enjoy the lifetime of free beer your lawyer gets for you.

Yeah, once Southsider and Kap and Chaos had their kids you just never saw them around much anymore.

An expose' on pork spending by a Senator!

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) If you live in their District you will know if you want to vote for him or not. If you do vote in their district it wouldn't matter. If Congressman Jim saved a baby's life it doesn't matter if he's a Dem or Rep. If he's gotten 200 parking tickets, again, it doesn't matter. If he's introducing legislation, then it does, because it gives us an idea if it will pass or not, face a veto, etc. The labels just create an opportunity for generalizations. Just because Congressman Alpha is a shmoe, doesn't mean Congressman Beta, from the same party, is too. I am dumb and I need to label people and then I don't have to think too hard because it hurts my little brain. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:08 AM) I understand the logic because of Spring weather, but have we forgotten about doubleheaders? Yes we have. Players who make $8 million a year are much too delicate to be asked to play two games in a single day.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) I'd rather they did not mention the party at all, unless it was relevant to the discussion. If the guy was trolling in an airport restroom, not important, if he is resigning, important. I understand your point but I don't agree with it, and not just because party affiliation makes for good scandalmaker fodder. The makeup of the legislature with regard to the R:D ratio largely defines the agenda of the legislature, so for general news stories I think it's good to let the audience know which side of the aisle a guy sits on as they listen to and try to digest whetever it is he's saying. -

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 08:11 AM) Honestly, there are a few people whose posts have been to the point that more than a few mods would love to push the button and say bye bye. And yes, at this point, after being down some long roads with those posters, it will be something we'd like to do. But it takes an awful lot to have enough mods to agree someone should be suspended. But we'd be much, much, happier if the manners and dialog would improve to the point it would be unnecessary. Are you guys trying to tell me something?

QUOTE (mreye @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) Sam Adams Recall BOSTON -- The brewer of Samuel Adams beer is recalling selected bottles of beer that may contain tiny bits of glass. Boston Beer Co. said Monday the recall comes after routine inspections at a company brewery in Cincinnati found defects in 12-ounce beer bottles made by a third-party supplier. Inspectors discovered that bits of glass could break off and possibly fall into the bottle. Fewer than one in 100 of the bottles from the Cincinnati plant are believed to be defective. The Sam Adams beers affected by the recall have a special marking on the base of the bottle. The marking has the letter "N" followed by the number 35, followed by the letters "OI." Boston Beer says there are no reports of any injuries to consumers. This story brings up an interesting but little known fact about beer bottles in general. That row of little pimple bumps down by the bottom of most bottles serves exactly this purpose – they are a code indicating which production line a particular bottle comes from. If defects are found in bottles they use those codes to trace the potential problem back to the point of origin.

I agree, it's incomplete reporting when a Congressperson's party affiliation isn't included in the reporting. On the other hand, every time Fox News "accidentally" puts the wrong affiliation on an elected official when a scandal breaks, that's just a funny look into the fact that Fox News doesn't think much of the intelligence of the average Fox News viewer. -
Can anybody join the rant?? I have a rant. These scheduled days off after the opening game of a series like today vs. Minny and last week after the season opener @ Cleveland suck balls. The team has some great momentum going and doesn't need the day off. And I want to watch a damn ballgame tonight. /rant

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 08:13 PM) Ah, I was under the impression they brewed their own "Ale." I know they do not called it beer since its considered Ale. I thought they had been brewing it themselves since its inception. No, they have never operated a brewery of their own, at least in modern times. The fondly remembered Prior Double Dark was actually a very good beer considering it was being brewed wel before the American craft beer revolution. It didn't travel or keep particularly well so some people's first experience with the bottled version was a negative one if they ran into a skunky bottle, but the late great Beer Hunter Michael Jackson (the other Michael Jackson) gave it a highest rating in the first edition of his good beer guide. At the time, Anchor Steam was the only other American beer to get such a rating, and that is a world-class beer.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) Shiner Bock is a nice light dark beer. Elliot Ness isnt bad either. Also the "dark" at McSorley's in Manhattan. Ahhh McSorley's – "Be Good or Be Gone." Sawdust on the floor and cheese and onion plates as pub fare. Gotta love it. The "dark" from McSorley's has actually been a bunch of different contract-brewed beers. Last time i was there in the Waely 90s, the dark was actually Prior Double Double dark contract brewed for McSorley's by Schmidt's of Philadelphia. Before that, Rheinegold had contract brewed their dark ale before them for many years until they folded. Matt's Brewing bought Prior Double Dark and a couple of Schmidt's other brands when they launched the Saranac line several years ago and for a while I think they contract-brewer for McSorley's. Ortlieb, Heileman, Stroh, and Pabst facilities have also all brewed McSorley's beers at some point, so it's very confusing. But yeah, nothing like ordering 2 light, 2 dark, and an onion plate at that venerable old place.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) I don't know if I am alone in this or not, but ew. I can't stand dark beers. Yeah, but that's just because you suck.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I'm going to buy a case of Sam and let them know why. If we want corporations to act in this manner, they need to know that consumers notice, care, and will buy more of their products. I'm going to drop in on Tex unannounced because I know he's got a case of Sam Adams to share.

Palestinians kill rare & endangered sea turtle
FlaSoxxJim replied to EvilMonkey's topic in The Filibuster
Scientists don't know all of the life history ins and outs of any of the sea turtle species. There is a well-defined seasonality to nesting, but that's only the adult females and individual animals only nest every other year or so. By and large, the world population is scattered throughout their range and seasonal fishery closures would not be too effective. Some longline fleets have made some improvements in longline fishing gear – replacing "J-hooks" with hooks that are not as lethal to turtles and changing the baits to items not as enticing to them. But the world fleet is far from 100% compliant, and it's still only an incremental improvement. It has been estimated that around 3.8 million hooks are put into the oceans on longlines EVERY DAY, so it's just a staggeringly large-scale issue. And to make matters worse, there is sort of a snowball effect in the fishery such that when target stocks decline and it's harder to catch quotas then the number of longlines deployed tends to go up rather than down. That makes it hard for target and non-target species to withsand that kind of harvest pressure. -

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 10:07 AM) But speaking of the turtle, where are their habitats located at? Are they around the globe, or just in a few areas? They are trans-oceanic migratory animals, present in all tropical and temperate waters worldwide. And that is at the heart of the conservation problem. 90% of coastal nations may on board with cooperative conservation efforts, but those efforts are undermined if the animals hatched on a beach in one part of the world are not protected in all the waters they may end up in during various stages of their life. I'm not getting on the Isreall/Palestine who's-the-worse-bad-guy merry-go-round. It never seems to do much good. -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) Well, being in the front row, I'll have plenty of wind-up room. So how do I spot your brother? If he's from FL like you, can I assume he'll be the only mofo with a tan? Well, he's got a temporary lobster burn now because he just came back from a visit down here, but normally he's as pasty as the rest of you. As to how you can spot him, well, he'll be the one in the Sox gear silly.
