  1. That's pretty cool, I'll have to find the journal article and give it a read. Based just on the CNN story, I'd assume the investigator mis-spoke when he called these frogs "the most ancient" frogs you'll find. Surely, this lungless species evolved from a normal lung-bearing line that lost the organs at some point. Otherwise, there would be a lot of fossil evidence of lunglessness being an ancestral trait in frogs. I also don't have a good feel for the scale of the animal from the CNN article. Cutaneous and buccal respiration are usually considered insignificant to be the primary means of respiration in animals with any sort of size to them. The article also suggests that the frogs are not entirely sedentary if they have to navigate the fast streams they live in. High physical activity levels would be really interesting to see in a vertebrate that only respires cutaneously. Very cool stuff. Thanks for posting.
  2. looking forward to txt from my bff the fcc LOL.
  3. My favorite adapted theme, albeit not the original recorded version, is the one they used for That 70s Show. I know of maybe two posters here who realize that the "Hanging out!. . . Down the street!. . . " song they sing at the beginning of the show was originally a kickin' tune from the most underappreciated band in rock and roll, Big Star.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) To celebrate the event, I'd have no problem if Ozzie starts Ramirez at 2nd base. To celebrate the event, I'm smoking Cohibas and drinking Havana Club rum. This could like the start of a great baseball tradition.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) After reading this thread and shaking my head many different times, I just want to add the following historical quote. "Those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it." It's true. I knew a kid who had to repeat it three times.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 10:31 PM) John Cleese wants to volunteer as a speechwriter for Obama. Manuel Hillary Clinton, you waste space!!
  7. I'm comfortable in my assumption that all of the good looks came from the Moms' end of the gene pool. Cute kiddos there!
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) Two lists! Tex, are you sending me yours? I doubt it. Tex always seems rather listless.
  9. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 05:17 PM) That's what they called them, not my words. You didn't really disagree with my position in your post. My post was about how it divides people. But I did. You suggested that wearing #42 was a celebration of ignorance and I countered that it was celebrating someone breaking through that ignorance. There is a difference.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) guess you wont be seeing me much starting in September Heeey, Congrats!!
  12. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Cool, so it wasn't some insane coincidence, but rather a bit more of a joke at my expense. WHEW! More something I just tossed out there to see if you'd catch it, after seeing you seconding w3hat I had PM'd knight about having to exclude Marx Brother films. Though for some reason you never seem to get picked on as one of the old guys, and that's starting to torque me off a bit.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 11:29 AM) Enlighten me, because I very well may have killed off those brain cells (and laughed about it!). Spit take!!
  14. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) HA!!! Do you know about my insane love of Lillian??? Yes I do. And curiously enough, I now have "Pictures pf Lilly" playing in my head.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) And this is exactly what I mean, and I'll illustrate it with an example from your post. I have no issues celebrating Lincoln's Birthday, or JR day at the ballpark, etc...but with a respectful tip of the cap and rememberance at the start of the game, and nothing more should be necessary. There is no need to wear JR's number or a patch, just as there is no need for everyone to run around with Lincoln sytle top hats on all day, either. But what is the harm if they do wear a number or a patch? I think that's very unobtrusive as far as gameplay is concerned and I think it's pretty classy.
  16. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) You're right. I think it would be fun to hear BigEdWalsh and FlaSoxxJim tell us about going to see double features for a nickle and how orchestras were way better then talkies The Lillian Gish was a tall drink of water, I tell ya.
  17. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:21 AM) Why only the past 50 years? Is it because we know nothing touches the brilliance of the Marx Bros.? Ha!! When I sent knight my list I told him that Duck Soup and Night at the Opera were only excluded because of the 1958 cutoff. :cheers
  18. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 12:55 AM) Quick question about the actual show. Next week is the live finale. Does anyone know how much actual time there was between tonight's taped last week on campus and next week's finale? How does the finale work? Is the winner the one that has the highest percentage of weight-loss? Oh, and if anybody is open, my suggestion is to vote for Roger to be in the finale. Last week Roger was let go from his job for being away from work for too long. Not sure what kind of agreement what they had in the beginning, but that kinda blows. My guess is he will trade this experience for any job. He was an associate Athletic Director at Jacksonville State in Alabama. I'm pretty sure it will be % weight loss. That has been the way they have figured out who falls below the line and is eligible for elimination since season 2. I think there is only the one week between last night's ep and the finale. I know all of the voted off members (including whoever of the remaining men gets booted) come back to weigh in and compete for the $100K at-home prize, and then the 3 finalists are competing for the $250K. I'm guessing Mark will be the one eliminated if his whining irritated everybody as much as it did me.
  19. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:01 AM) I think its stupid and based on the past, which shouldn't be celebrated for being ignorant. Instead some races, sexual preferences, and other minorities use crap like this as a crutch. They want to be recognized as different and forever will be until they get a notion to change. I'd prefer them to just recognize JR as one of baseball's greats not the first one of the colored guys to cross over. That's my two cents. For a second I thought this was my Grandma posting. I guess it was the reference to "the colored guys" that mislead me. But I do disagree with this position. Nobody is celebrating past ignorance by recognizing Robinson's contribution and what he had to endure prfessionally and privately as the first black player on the majors. Quite the opposite, we are celebrating a ray of hope cutting through a cloud of national ignorance. I'm not taking away from Jackie Robinson's purely athletic career accomplishments by noting the fact that what he endured and what he helped bring about is far and away the more difficult, lasting and important accomplishment. Cooperstown is chock-full of amazing ballplayers, but only one did what Jackie Robinson did.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:21 AM) If the Sox keep playing well, I bet the negativity stays away. It's so much easier to be happy when the Sox are playing well, and so much easier to be pissed when they are playing poorly. There is no better barometer of my personal mood, and I'm not proud of that fact. If the Sox are sucking balls my wife pretty much stays out of my way. It's not a good way to be and I try not to be that way but it would be a lot better all around if the team just didn't ever suck balls.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) you got me too, but i feel like its not a real rick roll cuz you said the link you were sending us to was a youtube vid...so if you mouse over and it says youtube i have no reason to not believe you...so we basically couldnt avoid it, even if we suspected a rick roll Nah, as per the #1 UD definition, it's a legit Rickroll: I love that last bit.

QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:01 PM) Steff has been posting youtube clips of her and her baby, Briana, if you want to see them. Link Dayam. Rick-rolled again.
  23. All players should wear #42 that day, and the players that don't want to honor Jackie Robinson in that way can pretend that they are honoring Douglas Adams.
