  1. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 8, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) Do you honestly believe that? Of course not. Hence the
  2. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 8, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) If the illegals weren't taking these non-benefit jobs, then the employers would be forced to hire legal citizens or immigrants and supply the benefits. Then we wouldn't have to "honestly decide how many of those citizens on the unemployment rolls would be willing to take the jobs the illegals are doing for the same wages and non-benefits the illegals are currently receiving." Which suggests there are economic implications and ramifications that one-dimensional points of view such as 'illegals must be taking good jobs away from Americans' do not consider. It's a mess and it needs fixing, that is very true. But it was allowed to become a mess because we Americans like to enjoy the fruits (literally in many cases) of a cheap labor force. It's only now that many are actually wondering how the tomatoes got to the market and who's washing the dishes at the resturaunt and wher did that army of hotel maids come from. And it turns out that, HOLY f***, it's a bunch of illegals!! Why all the illegal labor? Because our goods and services would otherwise cost two or three times what they do now. But 12 million cheap laborors living on the fringes of society are finally too many to ignore, and so now we're gonna fix things. . .
  3. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 8, 2006 -> 08:50 AM) Just curious.....All I have been hearing is that illegal immigrants only take jobs that Americans won't take. Well who is doing the other 76% of farming, 83% of cleaning, 86% of construction and 88% of food preparation then? I'd venture that a large proportion of the remainder is legal immigrant labor, as well as first-time jobbers (high school and college), summer work for the same, etc. And of course there are also several levels of skilled workforce in all of those fields that add to the jobs total bottom line. the better measure, I think, is to take that 5% total labor number and compere it to the US citizen unemployment totals and to honestly decide how many of those citizens on the unemployment rolls would be willing to take the jobs the illegals are doing for the same wages and non-benefits the illegals are currently receiving. I don't think you'd come close to filling all those shoes from that diminished pool of willing cheap laborers.

    Big Love

Great show. Bill's mom and dad are my favorite characters. Great theme song too. God Only Knows is one of those perfect Brian Wilson songs.
  5. QUOTE(DePloderer @ May 7, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) Don't worry, I won't be asking which hot dog stand we need to to frequent or open up the topic of ketchup or no ketchup. If you did ask the question about the best hot dog stand, the answer wpild be Fat Johnny's on South Western.
  6. Admission?!? Surely you jest. We. . . do. . . not. . . torture.
  7. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) I had to try Sol, Victoria, and Estrella when I went just because I always saw them on Mexican league soccer jerseys... All adjunct lagers with that distinct whiff of corn in them. They won't kill you, but they're no religious experience either.
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) Rush is and has been getting treatment. Humor is one way to deflect the point, though. Ach, I should have instead deflected the point by pointing out that I had exactly 0 posts in this thread until I responded to your Kennedy quip today. And in my response I tried to emphasize that I have little sympathy for Patrick Kennedy and in fact am worried he's out driving on the streets when he can't remember getting up in the morning. Anyway, it seems like these painkillers are good stuff with all these folks addicted to them. I'd better get a hold of some and see what I'm missing. Sorry, more humor.
  9. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:57 PM) Nice job, Jim. I'll just say I like Dos Equis in the green bottle with lime. That works for me. Nice and refreshing, but more often than not I'll take the amber (brown bottle). Though I like Negra Modelo, Dos Equis has the more authentic pedegree. Group Modelo was founded about 80 years ago by a South American bisiness with mexican ties. In contrast, Dos Equis was actually founded by a German immigrant in the 1880s. Good drinks all around.
  10. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) No, he would have gotten the same treatment that Rush got. Actually Rush getting treatment is probably not a bad idea. Maybe Pat's room at Mayo has an extra bed?
  11. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) Illegal immigration has always existed, I'll give you that. Now, let's talk about numbers. Twelve million? That number was probably not achieved in the first 200 years of the existence of this nation. No I'm sure it wasn't. Then again, we didn't have close to 300 million people here either. But I thought it wasn't about the numbers? I've been hearing 'illegal is illegal' for the last several months regarding this issue. That should negate concern over whether it is 12,000 or 12,000,000. Back to the point about not engaging in an argument based on, 'well they did it legally' when we are talking about immigrants 50 or 100 years ago. The statement is an overgeneralization that doesn't hold up to scrutiny and so seems a poor starting point for discussion rather than a point that is being "conveniently overlooked."
  12. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:43 PM) Still, if it was anybody with an ® after his name .... Well, he might get an extra :headshake
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:21 PM) no, the cracker crust. cracker crust = thin crust, at least in my culinary vocabulary of trying to explain the difference to outsiders.
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:25 PM) You assume that because it's suits your position. If this would have been Dick Cheney, it would have been trumpeted all over this board. I won't rush to Pat Kennedy's defense. Whether he was drunk or whether it was the pain medication he is apparently addicted to, when I hear he has no recollection of the events of the day – including getting out of bed. . . getting in his car . . . crashing his car – I just have to :headshake :headshake
  15. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) The point conveniently gets left out of the discussion. Bucause the point is altogether not the touchstone truth people want to make it out to be. Author Mae Ngai of Columbia University is a recognized authority on the history of illegal immigration. And guess what? It doesn't start with the Reagan-era amnesty, or any time near that which you would consider modern. Her first book, Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America, 1924-1965 (2004, Princeton University Press) gets into how the restrictive US immigration laws set the stage for the illegals epidemic. She's writtten a lot on illegal Chinese immigration during the Cold War years, and is working on something now that goes back as far as 1870 to see evidence of illegal immigration.
  16. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:20 PM) Ah, but this Kennedy thing hit yesterday. True, but the alleged special treatment would have been tthe subject of today's news cycle I assume.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) How Clintonesque. Seems like sex is still the one thing that can lay low the mighty.
  18. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) I find it curious that every newsflash about Rush hits this board in a New York minute, yet the Patrick Kennedy fiasco (Yes, the esteemed congressman from Rhode Island and the son of Sen. Edward Kennedy) gets nary a word. Like father, like son? Kennedy would have been the lead story of the day if not for the Goss resignation. It would be troubling to find he did get special treatment and was not administered a breath test. Kennedy is on his way into drug rehab at Mayo.
  19. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) where is that? See choices above.
  20. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) Thin crust is a better argument IMO, because there are actually huge differences between the pizzas. My favs are Mrs T's in DG and Dags downtown. Also Pats and Pequods is good too. Fox's, Baracco's, or Chucks on south Western in Beverly would be my choices.
  21. Malnati's gets my vote. But do not leave the city without tryng cracker crust Chicago pizza as well. That is the true Chicago pizza and to any who say differently.
  22. QUOTE(Soxy @ May 5, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) Please, please, please let it have been one of these hookers. And I think it's sweet what the German brothel is doing for us beginners. . .
  23. QUOTE(Soxy @ May 5, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Linkage Wait, hookers? maybe. Goss' name had come up in the Duke Cunningham Hookergate allegations. This is from DKos last week:
  24. Think it's related to Watergate hookers??
