QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 12:49 PM) Velcro? Very good. I couldn't believe it was invented that long ago, and actually on the market as early as 1951. I'm writing a piece on biomimetics and thought Velcro would be a good example of design inspired by nature.

OK, try to answer this trivia challenge without going to the Internat for help. Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral invented this product in 1948 after he took a close look at the seed pod burrs which kept sticking to his dog on their daily walk in the Alps. What is the product?

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) Every five years or so I rediscover Van Morrison. I wouldn't say radio has over played his music, but too bad a LOT of his songs are the soundtrack to a LOT of chick flick, romantic comedies. His music is kind of a guilty pleasure for me. There's nothing guilty about it. Other than a small handful of stuff that got killed by overplay I like listening to almost all his stuff, except for the stuff he put out through most of the 80s which was decidedly weak.

Losing My Religion and Andy Kauffman by REM, anything from the first couple of Oasis albums that got airplay, No Rain by Blind Melon are a few.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Feb 26, 2006 -> 03:30 AM) It's better to run off a 100% bulls*** platform than no platform at all. I disagree, even though that strategy might get you elected.

QUOTE(soxman352000 @ Feb 25, 2006 -> 11:07 PM) I bought an IPOD from Best Buy today. I get home, turn it on and it is working OK. Then I plug the USB into my computer and it flashes a message saying how the device is unrecognizable. Then the IPOD itself freezes and won't respond to anything I do on it. Is there a way to fix this and another question. For those of you that have an IPOD, when you bought it and turned it on were some of the words in a foreign language? Any help would be much appreciated Thank You. It sounds like you shoud try going through the reset sequence outlined in the user manual. I can't recal it exactly, but it requires havinng the iPod plugged unto AV wall power and holding down the (I think) On button for 30 seconds or so until the hard drive is reset. I had to do this the second day I had my iPod, and I have had to do it once since then, and that is the only issue I have had with it in almost 3 years.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:13 PM) You know, there are some people who are HONORING the old bands. But I guess they're right that most are just stealing. 50's and 60's Clones It's a serious issue for some of the old guys who are still trying to perform under their old monikers. So many of these music vets were so screwed over by their labels, publishers, and even their own managers the first go-round, it's aweful to see them still getting shafterd 50 years later. That said, I even think the "one original member" stipulation is too loose. By that standard, the original drummer for Rush (before Neil Peirt) could tour as Rush once the current band disbanded because he played on the first two albums. Heck, Ringo should start touring as the Beatles. . .

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 04:14 PM) Best song on Sgt. Peppers is without a doubt "Good Morning, Good Morning". But, I guess nobody else thinks its is as great as I do, or else it would have been a big hit. It was a big hit because the whole album was a big hit. The Beatles had definately outgrown the concept of the single by that time. As a matter of fact, there was no single released for anything off of Sgt. Pepper here or in the UK. My faves on the album that are goood rockers include Good Morning Good Morning, but also Getting Better and Lovely Rita.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) While there's no scale bar...based on the details that we do have, I'm going to call that a very poorly sorted, grain size from medium sand to cobble, angular to subangular unlithified litho-feldspathic subquartzose sand. Yes, but where does that put it on the phi scale? Rock tangent: It always throws my students for a loop when they are trying to grok that larger phi numbers mean smaller grain sizes.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) I could Google it, but it seems you could provide a better explanation. He meant to write "Tequila Association," but since he's not just a client but also a member in drunk standing he spelt it wrong. Tex: Wrong in So Many Ways. If Loving Him is Wrong (I don' Wanna Be Right). I can't quit you, Tex! [/looking for Brokeback smiley. . . ]

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Actually, I believe he's almost 100% right on that. Rex, you're wrong. How dare you ever show your face here again. Go listen to your western music. Western music is wrong.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Absolutely 100% wrong. So outrageously wrong that I've never seen anything wronger in my life. So wrong that other patently wrong things seem right by comparison. So wrong that we should start calling Tex "Wrongy Wrongington." Everybody pile on!

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 01:24 PM) Oh and one more thing, (I have to say this), welcome YAS to the Young Republicans club. And for the record, I'm NOT a Republican. For the record, Tex isn't Young.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 01:20 PM) Point taken. At the same time, though, now I see why (taking out the bulls***, which I tried to do once) this thread is a lot longer. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 01:21 PM) Point taken as well. And it was eloquently expressed. Gimme a big hug you crazy Democrats.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 12:51 PM) And as YAS just said, it speaks volumes about what your true feelings are. As for criticism for the current administration, there's plenty to go around, but most of the time you all just read right over those because it's not inflamed enough for you to comment on. Actually no, they are usually just not hot-button enough to engage any discussion in this forum. Without any of the Iraq War/GEOT ineptness or domestic fiscal malfeasence (sp?) issues, I would still have seriosu reservations about administration policy. I knew before GWB was elected that this was going to be a very bad stretch for the environment, for educatuion, and for science funding. That alone made him thewrong choice from my perspective based on what I hold most important. The fact that so many administration missteps so overshadow even these serious considerations speaks volumes about the BushCo. deficiencies. But back to the Dem only thread point. This is the place where Balta, me, or anybody should be allowed to post stuff that "speaks volumes about what our true feelings are." Posted here, it is not intended to get a rise out of you, YAS, NUKE, or any of the new crop of Young Republicans. Rather, they are hands-across-the-water, preach-to-the-choir posts that allow us to share our frustration. This is where they should be, and I think they should be spared some of the :rolly from all of us fellow Dems.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) Flaxx told me the party was one of inclusion. So here I am. And it most certainly is. But here in the Dem backroom, this is where we feel free to put up random, unsupported Bush bashing and Fox bashing posts. This is the appropriate place for such things. This is also becoming the only safe place where posting any little news item that might reflect poorly on the administration without getting the "here they go again" treatment from those who refuse to allow that any sort of criticism of the administration can have validity.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Feb 23, 2006 -> 05:36 PM) Here's a tip for you college students: Don't call your professors or TAs on their cell or at home. Just because you can find our numbers doesn't mean you should use them. I agree. About bugging your profs at home or on their cells. By all means, bug the s*** out of the TAs.

QUOTE(bmags @ Feb 23, 2006 -> 03:53 PM) quit whining ! GOD, when we asked Yoda what was "classic rock" he said ANY song from like 60-80, so don't blame us for putting any of our fav. songs up there. Besides, Dylan's only going to win because I blanked out and forgot to nominate "The Pina Colada Song" for inclusion.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Feb 23, 2006 -> 02:43 PM) I like Paris and that girl that sang last (Katherine, I think). Of them I think Katherine is my fave. Taylor (the grey haired guy) is totally my favorite. He's the only person on tv that is as socially awkward as most of the people I hang out with. Ace, well, um, he's very nice to look at. He can sing well, but he's much more fun to look at, his brother was also equally hot. My wife has gone totally into heat for that Ace dude. I think it's payback because she's seen me drooling a little watching Sasha Cohen skating this week.
