  4. Oh yeah? I dare you to paint it. I triple dog dare ya.
  5. Too true! Now, lets work on upping that NEA funding as well and we can call it a day.
  6. I only found out about it because in 2000 they did an NPR piece about the whole thing. And some people don't want the government to keep funding public radio... :headshake :fyou
  7. Hey Hammer, do you have any of the Stickfigure stuff? I only heard like 3 songs before and it was pretty darn good.
  8. That would be the lovable Mr. Jose Paniagua :fyou :fyou

    "Homeless" scam!

10 dollar bills?!? s***, let ME help you with those bags...
  10. Actually, if you REALLY REALLY wanted to get technical (Big Nerd Warning)... A natural or 'tropical' year, from vernal equinox to vernal equinox is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. That means there are actually 365.2422 days in the year.... Being just a little less than 365.25 days, adding up all the leap year corrections puts us off by about 0.03 days every 4-year cycle (0.0078 days a year), timekeeping errors do accumulate... So, even with a leap year system in place during the time of the Roman Empire, the slight overcorrection every 4 years was such that between 46 BC and 1582 AD, this accumulated error totalled 12.7 days. This became apparent when celestial events like the solstice that used to historically occur at one time were now occurring more than two weeks early according to Julian celendar time... Pope Greg, Part XIII to the rescue!!! Gregory gets us closer to the modern calendar by decreeing that all years divisible by 4 are to be leap years EXCEPT for century years. These now must be divisible by 400 to be leap years. (are you still with me?)... This simple (?!?) fix gives us the Gregorian Calendar which gives us an error rate of only 1 day every 3,333.3 years! The calendar was put into effect in predominantly Roman Catholic countries in the late 16th centure, and necessitated tossing out 10 whole days from the calendar then in use (tough luck if you had a birthday that year).... To really confuse things, the Brits didn't adopt the Gregorian system until 1752, which meant there were completely different calendars between Great Britain and Christian Europe for almost 200 years! But, that's only if you want to get technical... :D :D
  11. Those really do look nice. I had to do a double-take to be sure that wasn't a wooden seat from the old park. [kicks himself hard one more time for not buying a block of those back in the day...]
  12. FUNdamentals is set to be completed by 0pening day this year, along with the rest of the Phase V improvements. Whether they are on schedule or not is another matter, but I've not heard any indications otherwise.
  13. Raging nerd that I am, here's some Lingua Latina for the day... Solstice = [sol = sun] + [-stitium = stasis or stoppage] The term refers to the apparent noon-time elevation of the sun remaining unchanged for several days before and after the solstice. After this, the noonday sun gets higher each day and the days gradually grow longer.
  14. And sadly, the park is still not going to get a fair shake from writers who insist on calling it sterile, the Ball Mall, etc. :fyou Screw 'em, the place has become just about the best and most inviting places to see a game in MLB. Their attendence in not needed.
  15. Sadly, with seats starting at $170, I'll be on the outside looking in.
  16. I just got "America the Book" (Jon Stewart) as an early Christmas gift from by boss, so I'm jumping into that. Hopefully I can also finally knock out the rest of HP and the Order of thr Phoenix, seeing as book 7 will be out in July. The problem is that my wife makes me read it to her (character voices and all) on car trips after the kids have fallen asleep, and that never gives us much time to get through that 850-page behemoth.

    "Homeless" scam!

I don't doubt the sincerity, I was just morosely ammused by the sentence you wrote.
  18. Again, the point is that if the existing seats are weather-trashed anyway and need to be replaced, what's the harm in going traditional?
  19. It sounds like the weather has finally worn out the blue seats, so since they need replacing anyway I'm stoked they're going green. I think the logo-ed aisle seats will be really cool too.

    "Homeless" scam!

Did you notice how unintentionally funny (darkly funny) that statement was after you typed it? 'See, here the run-down, mentally and physically ill, substance-addicted, homeless folks have a good thing going... and then SOMEBODY HAS TO COME ALONG AND RUIN IT!'
  21. Very good summary of the Gardiff Giant hoax (Don't you think the Cardiff Giants would be a kick-ass name for a semi-pro ball club?). The only issue with the summary is that there WERE people at the time (scientists mostly) who did call the thing an out and out fake: Here's a picture of the 'discoverers' paying their respects to the Cardif Giant: The Giant is now on display at the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown. So if the Baseball Hall and Ommegang Brewery weren't enough to get that road trip going, here's one more thing to see in Cooperstown.

Fratz Lang's 'M' with Peter Lorrie?? If so,
  23. I dislike this woman using the term 'cruel' in this sense. Cruelty is a human commodity. Male wild boars certainly are aggressive, maybe even ill-tempered (much like mutant sea bass), but it's anthropomorphising a bit to much to call the behavior cruelty which implies pre-meditated meanness for it's own sake. As far as how mean it is to bang-stick cows between the eyes for slaughter (odd how that word is only one letter removed from 'laughter'...), I think it is as humane a practice as you are going to find in the modern slaughterhouse industry.
  24. True, but that's kind of like being King of the Dips***s, isn't it?
