  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 08:42 AM) I also forgot to mention, I really liked that he mentioned his respect and admiration for Obama, and how there is more that unites them than divides them. McCain really took a page from Gore's playbook in 2000. At the debates, he would always talk about how there are hundreds of issues that he sees eye to eye with Bush on... and McCain was using the "Fight for you" thing that's vintage Bob Shrum actually. I caught bits and pieces of the speech. I thought it was well done. McCain is always able to overcome his lack of orator's talent at a convention. He did it in 96, he did it four years ago and he did it last night. I will say this though, although what he said at the end was pretty inspirational, it felt a lot like someone at the end of his career, not someone trying to start a new phase of one.
  2. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) You should have been the speechwriter, because that's the message that should have come across – and would have been effective. Not the one that did – that Community organizers have zero real responsibility or relevance in the GOP universe. Except for the thousands of people who organize for the GOP and actually manage their ground game. Community Organizers turn people out to vote. Oops.
  3. It's real early to see what the reaction will be. Might be a big bounce for the GOP, might be negative, might have no effect at all really. I saw about half the speech.... and have seen people saying it was as good as Obama's speech. I disagree and here's why. When I watched Obama's Speech, I thought to myself "Wow, this is getting really negative. Reminds me of McCain's green screen speech a couple months ago." Then he talked about the positive changes he would make - with some substance behind them. He would attack but do so respectfully. His speech was as much about making America better and what he can do to help make it better as it was to show how McCain wasn't right. Palin's speech was all about his family. Then it was about cheap shot after cheap shot. No real substance to the speech. Nothing to tell me why she's a good choice. Just cheap shot after cheap shot. It felt nasty. I'm biased, I admit. I'm voting for the Democrat regardless because I feel that is the party that bests works for my interests. But if I was undecided? I'd probably look for the candidate who doesn't feel like the only way to win is to be nasty.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) thanks for the info. I've never really dealt with one in this area. Might exst, but I've never seen one other than the "let's clean the neighborhood" type stuff you see every year. Community Organizing is hard to do successfully. I've tried it, and it's hard, mostly thankless work.
  5. QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) We have community organizers in Plainfield, Naperville and Aurora. The tasks may be different, but the title is the same and some make nice coinage for doing so out this way. I saw about half the speech. She reminded me of Summer in Napoleon Dynamite, honestly. I kept expecting to hear "Who wants to eat chimineychangas in the cafeteria anyway?"
  6. I don't know how well this b****iness is gonna play outside of his base.
  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) I said to someone the other day that I swear Hillary knew what was coming re: Palin. I don't think that's the case. I really don't. Hillary doesn't control her surrogates. I think Obama personally pissed off Ferraro, and I think Ferraro is just speaking because nobody would talk to her irrelevant ass anyway. If there was anything close to collusion with McCain, it would be really bad for Hillary in the short, medium and long run. Her people never could keep their mouth shut about things, so we'd probably already know by now.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) There was a report out of Ohio on Sat or Sunday that a democratic office was getting an influx of women supporters who were CONSIDERING McCain, but where so turned off by his gimmick they will now work for Obama. I guarantee you that was like two people.
  9. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 04:54 PM) Ok, this is just bulls***, in fact, it needs to stop being posted (not aiming at you, BS, but this kind of s*** is just over the top nonsense.). It's no worse than the cartoons or attempts at humor that get posted on the GOP thread.
  10. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) She'll rally the base. but the fact that she cut lines praising Hillary from her stump speeches says a lot. She was gettign booed! Frankly, she'll get a few "Clinton women". And the McCain campaign will trot them out to show how great Palin is. But, I'll be blunt, and PLEASE dont take this the wrong way.... these are the moderate women who voted for Hillary because she was a woman. They might like her for some things and McCain for another. Now that there is a woman with McCain, they think that's ok. NOt that they are "mindless" voters who see a owman and vote. It might have just been the tipping point. It wont be a lot who go to McCain, but some. Hillary and BIll went a LONG way last week towards forcefully pushing Hillary's women to Obama. And it seems to have worked based on a recent poll. Like I said, it wont be a TON that flock, but if it's only a drip... it wont be enough. On the other hand, I'm willing to bet that for every Hillary turned McCain supporter based on the Palin pick, you're going to get a half-hearted Hillary Democrat volunteering for Obama and getting back involved.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) At the end of the day I just hope 60 days is enough time to hammer on the fact that Obama clearly isn't fit to run this country. The problem is he's such a tremendous speaker that many Americans will ignore his record. Plus McCain isn't exactly someone that wows you so some people that are intelligent enough to recognize Obama's complete joke of accomplishments, policies, and voting record, will still vote for him because they at least like the guy (sadly that plays a huge part at the end of the day). I think McCain makes judgment an issue that doesn't necessarily work in his favor. Especially when it comes to the Palin pick. He barely met the woman, then picks her because nobody else he really wanted would make conservatives in his party happy, and called her a "soulmate." They barely know each other. Although this may work within his own party, it won't work outside of it. Because as they get to know Palin, they'll see that there's not a lot of substance behind the pick. He picked as a pander to women and his base. And it's already backfiring. If Palin shines tonight, there could be a different light on that tomorrow. But judging from the speech she gave Saturday, she sounds more like someone speaking at a Rotary meeting, not someone running for Vice President.
  12. QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) I wouldn't necessarily say that he's "not fit," but I completely agree with your second point. If you're comfortable with a Euro-socialist in the Oval Office (as at least some people here are), that's fine. At least you're paying attention. But there are A LOT of people who are completely sucked into his cult of personality and aren't even listening to his platform. They don't realize that "hope" and "change" actually refer to "economic redistribution" and "a massive sell-off on Wall Street." Jesus, I know Ron Paul supporters who are now voting for Obama. I mean, WTF? Politically, Ron Paul is the freaking POLAR OPPOSITE of Obama. What in the hell kind of logic is that? To be frank, many of Ron Paul's supporters really wouldn't have supported Ron Paul if they knew what he stood for to begin with.
  13. I'm guessing Palin's speech might actually get higher ratings than McCain. And anyone expecting a bad speech at the convention from McCain clearly doesn't remember the fact that he was the highlight of the convention in 1996 and in 2004.
  14. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) I dunno. I think theres a lot more there and Im surprised not much is known about it. This is only from Wiki but it has some very interesting tidbits : Antoin "Tony" Rezko (born 1955 in Aleppo, Syria) is an American political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery in 2008. Rezko has been involved in fundraising for local Illinois Democratic and Republican politicians since the 1980s. He focused primarily on Chicago-area Democrats; for example, Rezko was one of Barack Obama's first major financial contributors. After becoming a major contributor to Rod Blagojevich's successful gubernatorial election, Rezko assisted Blagojevich in setting up the state's first Democratic administration in 20 years. Rezko was able to have business associates appointed onto several state boards. Rezko and several others were indicted on federal charges in October 2006, for using their connections to the state boards to demand kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state. While the others plead guilty to the charges, Rezko pled not guilty and was found guilty of 16 of the 24 charges filed against him. So, Obama got his house at a huge discount while Rezco bought the land for full price, and then Rezco sold Obama some of the land and were to think a guy like Rezco did this out of the goodness of his heart? It was proven that Rezco had "business associates" appointed onto state boards because of his "fundraising" and were to think that he got nothing in return from Obama? Is this the "change" we can expect, because all it seems to me is more of the same. I know Im biased and/or wrong about a lot of things but there is no way that anyone can believe something really shady was going on here. Dumb question: what state boards do senators get to appoint people to?
  15. QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) Excellent point. Kennedy completely balked at following through with that, as he didn't want to alienate the Dixiecrats. Kennedy almost stopped the March on Washington.
  16. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Is this comparable to being a member of a black nationalist church for 20 years? Obama's church was never considered a "black nationalist" church.
  17. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Nothing about Ayers hosting a fundraiser for him in his home, or Obama chairing the Annenberg Challenge, being picked personally by Ayers? His connection is way deeper than one $200 donation. The Annenberg Challenge is a program that awarded grants to schools across the country. He was picked to chair a program devoted to improving education? Scandalous! This isn't exactly super damaging to Obama in any situation, I think. You seem to want to taint Obama by having received one donation and having one fundraising party thrown by him by someone who wasn't convicted of anything. Oh, and he served on a board or two with him. Funny that you make a big deal out of this, when John McCain accepted over $112,000 in legal contributions by a convicted felon named Charles Keating who served 4 1/2 years in prison. And trips on corporate jets. And after all that, John McCain stepped in to try to get regulators out of Keating's Savings and Loan mess. I don't know, if you ride the Straight Talk Express, maybe you can tell me which should give you the greater pause.
  18. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) Can I ask what crimes Ayers has been convicted of? Answer: none. Never even charged with anything IIRC.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) http://newsbusters.org/blogs/lyford-bevera...elevant-stories Keep in mind that only one of these has been news for longer than a couple of days... The William Ayers story broke in February, not last week. Why would a scandal that broke 6 months ago get the same attention today as a new development in a brand new face in the election?
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 02:58 PM) I think I clearly state: 1) This cant be real 2) There may be a way to make posts appear older. Im just reporting to what I find and I was pretty skeptical but still thought it was interesting none the less. A lot of these sites are getting taken down quickly (Levi's my space, his sister Mercedes my space) so its hard to try and get the information before it gets deleted. It's fake, and you can adjust dates on Word Press.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) Not NEARLY what Palin's daughter has received. Yesterday pretty much every news story was either Gustav or Palin. His connection to William Ayers consists of one $200 donation to a state senate reelection fund in 2001 while serving on a board with him for a group that works to overcome poverty in Chicagoland. I guess that is highly controversial. A google news search shows that it has come up in the media 1,623 times in the past month. The story broke in February. Something tells me in a week, very few people will mention Palin's daughter. Or care.
  22. I think being involved with a secessionist movement is a big deal if someone is running for one of the two highest offices in the country. I think its more important than her State Trooper escapade (which would be an impeachable offense in many states). It's becoming apparent that the McCain campaign didn't think there was a lot to vet. I think what they and the rest of the country is starting to find out is that there just might be.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) Truman and LBJ were both hated pretty bad during their presidencies because of wars (moreso LBJ). History looks back more or less favorably on Truman, but people still think "Vietnam" when they think of LBJ. Time will tell with Bush 43 though. Which is a shame, because minorities in this country pretty much owe their civil rights to LBJ. For all the flowery talk that Kennedy gave, he never planned on delivering more than that.
  24. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:22 AM) When it happened to McGovern it slaughtered any chance he ever had. To be frank, McGovern slaughtered any chance McGovern had.
