That's just not true. Hall had a .466 OPS last season while Schneider was .662. Also, Hall ripped up his shoulder while Schneider has a strong defensive reputation. Church has a career .810 OPS in 4 major league seasons and can play all the OF spots. Saying he's a 4th OF is...well I don't know what team that's on.
The Sox have no equivalent players at C and OF in their organization (Church = cheap, .800 OPS OF in the major leagues, Schneider = C that can throw someone out and has an OBP over .326 (as not good as Schneider may be, the Sox have no one like him). It's sad, but if the Mets wanted help at those positions, the Sox could not beat this deal.
The reason the trade is horrible is because Milledge is probably already as good a hitter as Church, he's only 22 so he's definitely going to get better, AND most people think he's going to get A LOT better, AND he's not getting paid . So the Mets got older and probably worse over the next couple of years in the OF and then they get a defensive catcher who's making $4 million a year.
Bad bad trade.
On the other hand, you're right... if the Mets were specifically looking for that combo of players, the Sox don't have it, which is sad for us.
