  3. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 03:39 PM) I hate air shows and believe them to be a waste of taxpayer dollars. you've been paying taxes for at best 2-3 years...payroll taxes, to boot. I'm not exactly sure that's grounds for complaining... I can't tmagine what you're going to sound like when you're paying property taxes...

  9. Thanks to soxtalk's ads, I was able to consolidate my credit cards, find a doctor in Tennessee, play my RPG free of charge, and dress up in my pirate rock band. thanks soxtalk!
  10. QUOTE(Felix @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) Thats basically what I'm saying (or trying to at least). Because of that, I think that religious people have to have some sort of religion, while spiritual people don't necessarily. we agree. I was just focusing on the "member of...." part, which I do not believe a religious person needs to be. Then again, what does "member" mean.
  11. Does anyone know of a good site to sell excess school books? Mrs PA and I have like 40 text books from the past 3-4 years. It'd be nice to rid ourselves of the books and make a few bucks at the same time.
  12. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:45 AM) NBC has announced that Scrubs will premiere its seventh season opener on October 25th. It will be airing on Thursday nights in the 9:30-10pm time slot. I knew my pants were tighter for a reason.....
  13. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:39 AM) Yes, I guess we've established there is an open-endedness to the categories. Here's a good summarization of some 2001, 2002, 1nd 2004, national survey data. It does show a substantial decline in those who identify themselves as religious in the last 15 years, but still has over 80% of the country espousing either a religious or a spiritual bent. http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_prac...g/chr_prac2.htm and now that more people voted, my arguement goes out the window. I'm going to shut up now (celebrate, people)
  14. QUOTE(Soxy @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) You love bimodal distributions and you know it. btw, well done on the categories, even though I'm arguing them to death. Thanks for the effort. (I should put that in some other color so you know I'm being serious...oh well)
  15. QUOTE(Felix @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:30 AM) To me, the only difference between a person that is spiritual and a person that is religious is that the religious person is just a member of an organized religion. Past that, I consider them the same thing. If you're truly interested in how many people belong to an organized religion, then yes, I think you're probably right in the grouping that you've chosen. If you're interested in seeing how many people believe in any sort of god, then spiritual has to be grouped with religious. I would say that someone that is religious probably has some introductory level knowledge to their religion of choice. Someone that is spiritual wouldn't necessarily have to have much knowledge other than a willingness to be open to the idea of a higher power. Neither of these require a connection to an organized religion, imo. It might be splitting hairs, but I believe there are distinct differences between an "I'm not sure yet," an "I'm a spiritual person, and an "I'm a religious person"
  16. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) The spiritualists are confirming their belief in some metaphysical agent and the undecided are exactly that. Whether the undecidess are agnostic (in which case they can be tallied with the secularists) or whether they are wrestling with spiritual issues is left undetermined by the survey question. But the spiritual folks believe in something beyond the physical plane so I'd not lump them with the heathens. Still, Religious is different than spiritual. The question is "Are you religious?" the answer is that 24 people are not.
  17. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 10:36 AM) That's some Karl Rove Math there, huh? As of right now. 19 people have confirmed spiritual leanings, 4 are undecided, and 17 are decidedly secular. Remind me not to have you do my banking. Religious Yes, I attend services 3 or 4 times a month [ 9 ] Yes, but I don't make it to services very often [ 5 ] Christmas and Easter (and when someone drags me) Christian, baby! (or Yom Kippur Jew or Ramadan Muslim, etc) [ 2 ] total: 16 Non Religious I'm more spiritual than religious, per se [ 3 ] I'm still trying to figure that out [ 4 ] Nope, not at all. [ 10 ] Is atheism a religion? [ 7 ] total: 24 in otherwords: 3 to 2 Remind me not to have you do my science....
  18. looks like 3 to 2 in favor of the non-religious.
  19. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 10:01 AM) I would have made the same guess as PA, I guess this one is worth eleven points? why don't we just make ten louder?
  20. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 13, 2007 -> 06:01 PM) We got a new Gator at work today! Crickey! do you and DBAH0 hang out and put shrimps on the barbie?
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 13, 2007 -> 02:25 PM) Wow, PA, that's rich, even coming from you. There's so many ironies and oxymorons in these three sentances that I just don't know where to begin. We don't "ignore" you, we give you opportunities to express your opinions. You have reversed yourself in two sentances. To paraphrase: "I'm not a martyr", yet, everyone's picking on you? You know I support your freedom to express what you want, but this for me is a little over the top. I'm not chasing you away, I'm just simply saying you should think about what you're posting and how it's coming across. Kap, I have no issues with you. You weren't exactly the admin that I was speaking of. I never said anyone was "picking on me"...please, I'm a grown up. The only complaint I've ever had about soxtalk is that certain demographics and groups are protected and others aren't. And up until 3-4 people forgot how to read, I fully accepted that Soxtalk was a business and if Jason and Alex, et al wanted us to act a certain way I would. That's why I take breaks and try to stick to being funny (well, trying to be). I've always provided apologies when I've been out of line...There's probably 20 people that have one from me saved on their fridge at home. But I don't need to provide a justification statement.
  22. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) oh the drama. Instead of remembering this thread for the imagined insults you found, I'm thinking some people will remember it for you illustrating what you think of the other posters here. Kind of difficult to engage someone in intelligent discussion or argument when you know the that person is just trying to manufacture some sort of slight. I didn't have to imagine very hard. The insults were obvious. The ignorance was even better. The lack of critical reading was the crux of the issue. What I think of people really isn't the issue. It's always been my e-philosophy to make a point to wish people a happy birthday even though I think they're crazy idiots. Just because we don't agree on things doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to go out and get Yuengling and wings afterwards. I think there's an issue of reverse bigotry (that is, there's an unspoken set of opinions you should have) that is silently accepted by the admins of soxtalk... The mostly ignore me, which is fine, but it won't make me stop. I don't think I'm a pariah or a martyr. Just clearly more aware of this issue than others. again: Church Theologians = Scientists = Finite Knowledge + Infinite Pride
  23. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 06:31 PM) Mind providing examples? You clearly were mocking the scientists. That's kinda the whole point of using scare quotes (around "right" and "knowledge"). Whether or not you hold the opinion, you expressed it. Yes, I was mocking them, as I was mocking anyone who believes they're "right" (looking at the creationist) but can't really prove it because in the end you have to take a WHOLE lot of this life on faith...hence the mocking of "knowledge". as for examples, this was fun: I never said I was a creationist. ASSumptions, check! seems like a pretty nice insult to my church background. Underlying bigotry, check! Again...this is satire. One side says the other side is wrong while they're "right" and vice versa, whilst the "right" side doesn't even agree themselves. This thread was more or less a joke...and the hyperactive evolutionist didn't catch on to that when I said: in other words...I'm not much of a literal creationist, so this doesn't mean very much to me either way in the argument for or against evolution. so in fact: People acting so "right" when their knowledge is in fact so flawed, it makes me laugh.
  24. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 13, 2007 -> 09:32 AM) Any moment I spend thinking about her is a giant waste of my time. But as well all know, I'm basically always willing to waste a few minutes . . . not to mention the 20 minutes the cialis takes to start "working"....
