  1. Rick Helling's 2006 debut lasted just 2.1 giving up 6 runs. Magglio delivered two of Helling's babies DEEP into the left field bleaches to the tune of 4 RBI. Even Detroit's rookie starter crushed a no doubt double off of Helling. It was an ugly premier. 6-0 Tigers. EDIT: 8-0 Tigers. Monroe with a two run jack...still in the 3rd.
  2. THE MAYOR'S PLAN FOR TIGER STADIUM... Tiger Stadium: Demolished beginning this fall. Playing field: Preserved as a park and ball field. Preserved: A tiny portion of the stadium structure may be saved for a Corktown welcome center. Built: Residential and retail development around the field. Money: The city would pay for the demolition, estimated to cost $3 million to $6 million. Developers: Unnamed private groups would find the $40 million to $70 million for the new projects. An artist's rendition of the new Corktown development.
  3. A move that was LONNNNG overdue but I was expecting more than just condo's and retail...but given the Detroit City Council, anything is better than nothing. Interesting that they plan on saving the field though.
  4. In 1.2 innings of work before being yanked; Rusch gave up a single, 3 doubles, a triple and a homerun. Nice outing! lol
  5. I hope Dave Dombrowski is watching this transpire and realizing that he has a similarly useless and overpaid relief pitcher on his hands *COUGH TODD JONES* that would be in his team's best interests if he got rid of. With the exception of the K and BB totals, Ortiz and Jones have put up nearly identical numbers this year. ERA's in the mid 7's and both are giving up just about a run per inning pitched.
  6. QUOTE(loltrain @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 04:03 PM) It's definitely a very nice play, but it's not *that* much better. Please don't even think of using ES"Welovedivingcatchesmorethananyotherplayinmlbhistory"PN's rankings as a legitimate comparison. Why is that? That's always bugged the hell out of me. A guy could make an unassisted triple play with his eyes closed and he would still finish behind Tori Hunter making his twelth diving catch of the season. It makes no sense. But then again, we're talking about the same station that airs the National Dominoe Championships.
  7. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) maybe, if the drays stay close and leyland goes to jones to close it out. I love todd jones. the sox have a chance to gain ground anytime detrot puts a ball in his hand. Jones did pitch two innings last night so I'd be surprised if Leyland allows him to pitch tonight. And unfortunately since Zumaya pitched three innings on Sunday, he's not going to be available tonight either. The same goes for Rodney as well who pitched three innings in last night's series opener. So Detroit's bullpen tonight consists of Bobby Seay, Jamie Walker, Roman Colon and Jason Grilli. So basically Kenny is going to have a pitch well in order for the Tiggers to win.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2006 -> 05:23 PM) Zumaya threw a couple of innings today to get his first save, but at the end of the game, with like 2 outs in the ninth, he threw a pitch too low, called Pudge out to the mound with some pain in his side. He finished the game, but that's got to be your real concern with a guy like Zumaya...overworking a guy that young could destroy his arm. Zumaya caught a spike in the ground on that play and tweaked his ankle but it wasn't anything serious which explains why he continued pitching the inning.
  9. I really think that Zumaya has been much more valuable to the Tigers as a set up man than the best case scenario had he been the closer from day one. He pitches in a LOT of extremely tight situations...today's game case in point. And he does so way more than the closer Todd "tee-ball" Jones.
  10. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 03:20 AM) I like this answer. I still feel we're clearly the most talented team in the division. If we play like we're capable, something we clearly haven't done this year, will be fine. Just asking, what do you see as Chicago's rotation, three bullpen arms and closer three years or so down the road? With the assumption that all of the arms come from within the organization. I know the Sox have a few pretty impressive arms down in the minors. For the Tigers my staff is looking like: 1. Justin Verlander 2. Jeremy Bonderman 3. Joel Zumaya 4. Maroth or Robertson 5. Andrew Miller Bullpen 1- Fernando Rodney Bullpen 2- Humberto Sanchez Bullpen 3- Wilfredo Ledezma Closer- Kevin Whelan (possibly Zumaya if he gets pigeon-holed as a closer)
  11. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:15 PM) Dont the tigers have a baseball message board. You're right they do...and I'm posting there tonight as well. http://www.motownsports.com/forums/forumdi...hp?s=&forumid=7 ESPN also has a message board...and shockingly, I'm posting there as well. RealGM...yep you got it. I ask, why constrict yourself to just one point of view?
  12. The Tigers have the most dangerous 7-8-9 in all of baseball. Power wise. Add in Craig Monroe and it's the most dangerous 6-7-8-9 in all of baseball. Monroe - 10 HR's Shelton - 12 HR's Thames - 10 HR's B.Inge - 12 HR's
  13. QUOTE(loltrain @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) Zumaya will be staying in the pen. It sounds like noone really has a clue how long Maroth will be out as it depends on the number and size of the bone chips, could be anywheres from 2 weeks to the rest of the season. I'd like to see Humberto Sanchez get a shot with the Tigers. I've heard a lot of good things about that guy's arm. He's been a fixture in Baseball America's "Hot Sheet" so far this year. People say he's an imposing presence on the mound ala Joel Zumaya but with a fastball that "only" tops out at 97. QUOTE(loltrain @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) Colon is out of the Tigers rotation, Zach Miner will be starting against the Red Sox. (Great triple A numbers but who knows how that will go in the majors) A great quote from Miner about his upcoming start against the Red Sox.
  14. It looks like Byrd was pretty impressed with his counterpart, Justin Verlander last night.
  15. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 27, 2006 -> 09:31 PM) I'd be surprised if Zumaya avoided arm troubles pitching as a starter. His delivery looks like a recipe for Tommy John surgery. He practically flings the ball at 100 mph. He does use a lot of arm but I think it's less violent than say Felix Hernandez.
  16. QUOTE(3E8 @ May 27, 2006 -> 09:05 PM) Thanks. I'm surprised the organization feels that his future is in the bullpen after averaging 6.5 hits and 11 k's per nine through his minor league career with no relief appearences which I think was all accomplished by the young age of 20. It's a raging debate amongst Tiger fans. Most really want to see him start. A stud starter is so much more valuable than a stud closer IMO.
  17. QUOTE(3E8 @ May 27, 2006 -> 08:37 PM) tigerfan, is there any chance that Zumaya will move into the rotation for Maroth or will he stay in the pen this year? The replacement for Mike Maroth...
  18. QUOTE(3E8 @ May 27, 2006 -> 08:37 PM) tigerfan, is there any chance that Zumaya will move into the rotation for Maroth or will he stay in the pen this year? Slim to none and slim just left the building. Either Colon will be promoted from the bullpen or one from the group of Ledezma, Miner and Tata will be called up from the minors. Zumaya is going to stay put where he is for at least the rest of the year. Most of those within the organization believe that his arm and makeup are better made for brief inning or two stints. That said, this is his first year not starting. I'd like to see him get a shot at some point but I don't know if it's going to happen.
  19. Verlander hit -101- on the gun in that last sequence. Electric arm.
  20. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ May 26, 2006 -> 03:11 PM) You guys have a good lineup. There's no question about it. But let's compare defense at the key positions (C, SS, CF, and to a lesser extent, 3B) C: Rodriguez vs. Pierzynski Rodriguez is obviously a better defender, but you can argue that AJ calls just as good of a game, if not better. SS: Uribe vs. Polanco Polanco is good, but he ain't no Uribe on defense. Juan is simply spectacular with the glove. He has a Top 3 arm out of the SS slot. CF: Anderson vs. Granderson Anderson is a Top 5 defensive CF right off of the bat. Have you seen this guy play? There is no contest between him and Granderson. 3B: Crede vs. Inge And you thought that they called Crede a poor man's Brooks Robinson just for the hell of it? You're looking at the best defensive third baseman in the majors. A f***ing monster with the glove. You can't overlook the key defensive positions in your analysis. These guys save runs on a daily basis. Don't worry, you'll soon find out what Sox fans already know. We have the best defensive team in baseball, with pitching representing the vast majority of defense. If you're a Pistons fan, perhaps you know a little something about it I'm sure you don't know much about Curtis Granderson but many, outside of Detroit, consider him as one of the top young defensive centerfielders in all of baseball. In his relatively major league career, he has YET to commit an error in centerfield. The comparison isn't as lopsided as you may think. It's actually probably pretty close. And I also don't know if you are aware or not that the Tigers are currently #2 in the majors in Defensive Efficiency Rating and also rank several spots higher than Chicago in Fielding Percentage. Pitching and defense have been two of the biggest reasons for Detroit's quick start.
  21. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ May 26, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) Detroit also hosted the A.L. Central clinching game in 2005. That was pretty big.
  22. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 26, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) It's always impressive to shut down the Royals offense. That's true. It all might be moot as I've heard that Leyland doesn't want to mess with the bullpen's rhythm by promoting anyone from within to a starter's role meaning that Maroth's eventual replacement will more than likely be coming from the minors. If that's true, it means the 5th starter is either going to be Jordan Tata, Zach Miner or Wilfredo Ledezma. I personally think Roman Colon would be the best choice though.
  23. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 26, 2006 -> 08:37 AM) Dmitri Young and Maroth go down. It will be interesting to see how Detroit responds to this. Losing Dmitri is actually a positive. They've essentially been without DaMeat since the start of the season. He's done nothing thus far this year. Maroth will be a significant loss though if he's out for an extended period of time. That said, Ramon Colon looked pretty good yesterday filling in for Mike who couldn't even last past the first out of the first inning.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 26, 2006 -> 10:03 AM) Go back to de-toilet, and take your crappy opinion with you. That's pretty funny...and original. When's the last time you were in Detroit? Was it when they hosted the Super Bowl this year? Or the Ryder Cup in 2004? Perhaps the Stanley Cup Finals a year or two before that? What about the NBA Finals or MLB All Star Game last year? Or perhaps you're planning on visiting the area when they host the PGA Championship in 2008? Or an NCAA Regional in 2007? Or maybe the NCAA Final Four in 2009? You're right, the area -must- be a toilet for all of those defunct sports organizations to hold their championships there.
