  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 12, 2011 -> 08:48 AM) Well, at least you think nuclear safety is a joke. No, just your arguments against it! A CEO's tasteless presentation has no impact or effect on how the plant is actually run and inspected. And although the NYT article you posted a couple of days ago raises legitimate concerns about the relationship between a regulatory body and the industry it is regulating, I also have a couple of years of first-hand experience from plants around the country. I can't imagine an industry that is more heavily regulated and more safety-conscious. It's almost to the point of causing a paralysis because there is so much paperwork, meetings, checks, walkdowns, re-checks, etc. to get anything done. For industrial workers, it'd be hard to find a safer workplace. One plant is freaking out and banning all adjustable wrenches because one loosened the other week, which caused the wrench to slip off the nut and the guy to injure his elbow. When I see stuff like this first-hand, I just have to shake my head at some of the criticisms of the industry.
  2. that's an incredibly lame "attack" on the nuclear industry lol New York Post

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 12, 2011 -> 08:05 AM) You know, I disagree a bit here...even though I'm good with mine, I still fear them, because I know that the issuer will try to screw me the first chance they get. For people who aren't careful with their purchases, they need to be even more scared. Fear is, at least for me, part of the motivator to cover all my bases on those cards and watch them constantly. You can also maim or kill yourself if you improperly use tools, but I don't "fear" my saw or blowtorch. You respect the danger, you keep up your guard and you stay safe. That's different than what Ramsey preaches, which is to never use credit (of any kind) ever.

Not to mention that more and more places check your credit. Renting an apartment, car insurance rates, even employment in many cases now and anywhere you have to get security clearances. Ignoring the realities of credit in the modern world and treating them as some fearful taboo isn't the way to go, imo. Just like some studies show AA actually has higher recidivism than no treatment at all with various other treatments that don't stigmatize and demonize the drug to the point of idolization, the same is true of credit or any other vice, really.
  5. Secured his ticket to Cooperstown tonight!
  6. QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 12, 2011 -> 12:25 AM) Paul Konerko with a SB and two web gems in the tenth is pretty much the greatest/rarest thing that could have happened. I'm really glad I saw that live, just wish I had followed through on my idea to head up and catch the game in person tonight (in OC for work).
  7. Fantastic snag by Konerko there, awesome toss!
  8. LOL how does that even happen?
  9. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 11, 2011 -> 08:32 PM) Refs definitely helped the Heat out this game, which is a shame considering they were up 3-1 in the series. Called 2 bogus travels in a league that hardly whistles players for actual traveling. Yeah those were some terrible calls, but the Celtics just completely collapsed mentally here at the end.
  10. Jesus, can't do much if Lebron's going to hit 3's like that.

  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 11, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) I'd think your radio is toast. I'd doubt it's a loose wire, because you'd randomly have had to have all 4 speakers' wires come loose at the exact same time. Same with the fuse, I don't believe your radio would even "light up" if the fuse was loose or dead. Go to Best Buy, buy a radio for $99 or higher and get the free installation. Gotta agree with this, sounds like the amplifier or something went out. You'll have one fuse going to your radio and that's it, no separate fuses to the speakers. A loose wire would cut in and out most likely and wouldn't take down four speakers at once. You could check for a replacement on eBay or somewhere similar, swapping out factory radios should be pretty easy. Or go the Best Buy route and have someone else do it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2011 -> 03:47 PM) Trouble is, long-term, they're not wrong. You can get by without a credit card...but you can't get by without access to credit if you expect to do things like purchase a car or home, and the ability to make those purchases is legally tied to what you do with your credit cards. If you travel a lot for work, you'd also be stuck with huge holding charges on your debit card from hotels and rental cars. If you're traveling for a few weeks in a row to different places, this can amount to thousands in holding fees, tying up your real, actual money and leaving you without an emergency back-up.

QUOTE (Tex @ May 11, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) The bank credit card industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars convincing people they need a credit card to do anything in life. They have been very successful in that. There will be a dozen replied talking about how essential it is to have credit cards. Listen to them and their stories then I just spent 4 days for free in Naples, FL and I'm getting several hundred dollars worth of free room nights for my honeymoon thanks to my credit card and I do not carry a balance, ever. I had a credit score right around 800 at the age of 24 thanks to taking out a card I never use. Credit cards are simply a tool, not something to be feared.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 11, 2011 -> 04:06 PM) This really deserves no more reasoning from the Left. I mean if every miniscule thing like this or the First Lady's pet project (healthy food options for children) can be turned into controversy then why even bother attempting a rational, mature conversation with these out-of-touch people. It's no wonder so many are turned off by politics. This isn't politics. This is team cheerleading.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 11, 2011 -> 08:55 AM) I'll have to do some internet searching and find a past interview with him where he is referencing Moses. I don't see it. I read it as him saying we need to get rid of Bush because he's corrupt/dangerous, just like cops. Nope! Why would you need someone to state explicitly what they mean by a metaphor, by the way? Malcolm X was more or less the Bad Cop to MLK's Good Cop. Both were effective and both were very important to the civil rights movement. But you're really missing the entire point of his poem. Maybe it's because you're just not familiar with the pov or the narrative he's expressing? It isn't about shooting cops or killing Bush, that's just dumb.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ May 10, 2011 -> 11:42 PM) I remember my very first credit card had a limit of about $500 back when i had ZERO credit.. Like balta, i pay almost everything with my credit card but thats only because i have the immediate cash or will have the cash to back it up shortly. About 5 years later i have a near perfect credit score at 800+ and my credit limit has drastically increased from that $500 that i started with let me tell you Best move I made was taking out a CC as soon as I turned 18 and sticking it in a drawer for 4 years until I was done with college. I honestly had completely forgotten that I even had it. Now I pay for almost everything with my CC.
  18. You ruined it, soxbadger! Yes, it's about the relationship between poor black communities and the police/government whom they mistrust as abusive and unjust. It's questioning the government's moral authority because they commit atrocities far worse than inner-city issues for reasons that are just as bad if not worse. Art, especially something like political poetry, is meant to shock. It's not easily consumable and safe fluff. It's meant to make you think.
  19. Anyone melting down over the White House having the audacity to invite the "vile rapper" Common to the WH because one time he said a poem with scary words, could you tell me what you think the poem is about and why it's so offensive?
  20. I guess when people are only exposed to the idiotic banality that passes for "political discourse" on almost all of TV and radio, anything like this is going to seem radical and dangerous.
  21. I'd never claim that Malcolm X didn't advocate violence, it'd be pretty abusrd. In fact I've linked to his "The Ballot or The Bullet" speech recently. Common's socially conscious poem/rap there isn't advocating violence, and I'm laughing about people freaking out over it. Especially since it's the same people that puff up their chests about "second amendment solutions"
  22. Common wrote a song that expressed strong dislike for Bush but wasn't actually advocating for his murder. And the Mumia thing mentioned in the Pajamas Media is pretty popular on the left, especially in circles concerned about racism/minority rights/corrupt police and judicial system. It's not exactly some terrible cause they support, they believe he was wrongly convicted of murder and rail-roaded largely because of his race.
  23. QUOTE (Felix @ May 10, 2011 -> 09:36 PM) The unintentional humor in this is priceless. LOL
