  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) From Time's Mark Halperin: "Hi, Humane Society? This is President Elect Obama. We're looking for a new puppy. It has to be hypoallergenic and it needs to be a rescue. Let me know if there are any shelters or rescue societies out there with matches." They'll be beating his door down to give him a puppy. It might be more of a PITA for a regular family to find a certain type of dog at a shelter, but I don't see them having much of a problem. I'd be really disappointed if it isn't a rescue.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) I would rather see people debating the merits of a bill before it passes, versus afterwards. Its good for the public to be educated about what is going on in their country. I think it is a healthy exercise in Democracy to have these exact kind of discussions. Maybe if more people did, they would be more willing to hold their elected officials accountable. If this were anything more than a paragraph on a website, sure. If he articulates this plan more formally, I'm all for debate. If it goes to Congress, lets discuss it. But let's not scream that the sky is falling just quite yet, and don't go accusing the new President elect of indoctrinating children to start a healthy discussion. That sort of crap is what has dragged political discussion through the mud. An open discussion on the merits or demerits of having mandatory civil/ community service for school children would be great, but starting out the discussion with accusations isn't generally isn't going to lead to that.
  3. We better not have the government do anything, ever then, because at some point someone might possibly expand it into something we don't like. This isn't an official proposal or bill. Analyzing every word just doesn't matter too much at this point. From everything else he's said, this would be optional for grant money for college students. I'm not sure about HS and GS, but many schools already institute these policies. We haven't had that dreaded slippery slope towards government enslavement from that. Extrapolating this to mean that the government is going to withhold your tax returns unless you complete required community service is absurd.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) I though the reactions were hilarious ("Woo! Yeah! Change! Everything is diffrent now! Woo!") but the rest of the episode was lame. They could have done so much more. The Oceans 11 spoof was stupid, but I loved they way they portrayed each side acting because that's exactly what I've seen on various message boards.
  5. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) Worst decision I've ever made... I bought this while trying to go to law school. The game is the best thing I've ever laid my hands on! I had about 60 hours into Oblivion (Bethesda's previous game that uses the same engine) and had barely touched the main quest. It was seriously addicting. The same sort of thing is happening to me with this game. Even if I only have 10 or 15 minutes to kill before I have to leave, I'll take the chance to play.
  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:39 AM) My brother is actually color-blind, he didn't know it until he was almost grown. When we were growing up I always just assumed he was f***ing stupid because he couldnt tell the difference between blue and purple. I have the same problem. It sucks some times.
  7. These guys are arguing along the same lines. GOP needs to go bigger government and stronger social conservatism. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/..._new_party.html http://www.nypost.com/seven/06152008/posto...arty_115606.htm LOL. Sure, if you want to give the Dem's a ridiculous majority in Congress.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:18 AM) Am I the only person that watched Obama in the debates? Seems like he mentioned it at least a couple of times that he would give college students the option of a tax credit in exchange for community service. Obama proposed this thing a long time ago. I see no problem with tying grants/ tax credits to a relatively low amount of community service. 100 hours for $4k, or $40/ hour. Not too shabby. This isn't an official proposal or bill or anything, so I think analyzing every word just doesn't matter too much at this point.
  9. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) People like that should not be allowed to give a point of view as they are so jaded it is sickening. It's his job to write ridiculously biased articles. Moderate, pragmatic pundits wouldn't exactly bring in the cash.
  10. QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:03 PM) Just because she has allergies doesn't mean they can't get a shelter dog. Many top breeds are also left at shelters by asshole owners. Many terrier mixes are considered good dogs for allergy suffers. As well as several breeds of Poodles, Pinschers, and Spaniels. Sadly popular shelter dogs. I'm sure it also depends on her allergy severity. My mom has pretty bad dog allergies and we had shelter dogs (a karen terrier and a dachshund) growing up. She has bishon freses (or however you spell that) now. You just have to know what dogs to look for.
  11. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 08:20 AM) OK. Which proves that in national elections the "bradley effect" is negligible, it doesn't prove there is no bradley effect. To prove a negative, that it doesn't exist, you basically have to prove that no where is there a single person that tells a pollster they are voting for the black candidate and insteads votes for the white. To prove it does exist, you would need to find one person who did. Basically it is usually impossible to prove a negative in an academic sense. The Bradley Effect is a significant variation in the final results from pre-election polls due to racism. If it is such a small number of people that it is negligible, it isn't the Bradley Effect any more. That's just statistical noise at that point.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) For a fascinating trend...here's an NYT map breakdown by county of which areas of the country Senator McCain outperformed President Bush's 2004 numbers. Make your own assumptions about what drove this effect. first link just goes to NYtimes.com
  13. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 05:33 PM) That's not really what I was saying, but okay... Take my words out of context. It's not like I'm saying "f*** those people!" FWIW, I thought pretty much the same thing.
  14. The insidious "Gay Agenda" of tolerance and acceptance for those who are different than you has been defeated once and for all. I think the vote proves that Gays do not exist in California, just like in Iran.
  15. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:17 AM) Which goes out the window when people are tempted with what they really want. Winning is everything. All's fair. No, that's what "ethics" are. Not just something you follow when its easy. I would be seriously disappointed and wouldn't view it as legit if it turned out everyone on the 2005 team was juicing. But that's just me.
  16. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 10:34 PM) Jos concession speech was one of the greatest political speeches I have heard in a long time. In my lifetime he is easily the best of the runner ups. I've said from the beginning we had two great choices and his speech spoke volumes about his character. Agreed. That was a fantastic speech. Made me wish McCain had won in 2000.
  17. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) You wouldn't want the Sox to win another title even if they were cheating and couldn't be caught? It's called ethics.
  18. QUOTE (mreye @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Anyone wearing a uniform, wielding a stick and wearing a scowl on their face while lying about being security is scary. I agree. It's definitely an intimidating image. Wouldn't keep me from voting and voting for who I wanted, but it's still intimidation.
  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) But see, if HEr views have completely changed you over to Obama, then you were probably just a RINO anyway and not really for Mccain to begin with. Sure, the vp helps to shape policy, and all we have been hearing is that she is 'a heartbeat away', but the policy stillcomes from the president, and if elected, that would be McCain. if McCain's views fit you just fine before the palin pick, how do you reconcile now supporting Obama's views, which are completely DIFFERENt from McCain's? You have just abandoned the voews you supposedly believed, because of a secondary position that ONLY matters if something happens to him. And despite his age, that's still a big if. I am not saying the second person's views shouldn't have any weight, but you are assigning her views more weight that you are giving the top dog. Plenty of conservatives have argued that McCain himself is just a RINO. The Mavericks definitely aren't fiscal conservatives. I really think we're seeing a split in the party right now, and the social conservative/ religious right wing of the party (which the Palin pick catered to) has driven them apart.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) She outdraws Biden and McCain at rallys, but it was a slap in the face to the American people? presidents pick vp's usually to offset somethig they are not good at or experienced at. Obama took Biden for his supposed 'gravitas' at whatever it is he is supposed to be good at. About the only thing he seems good at is inserting his foot into his mouth. McCain took palin because she is younger (to counter his claims of being too old to be in touch) and because she compliments his 'maverick' image. Nitpik all you want but she has taken on corruption in the party before, and that plays well with alot of people. So its a bad thing that Mccain took Palin because she was a woman? Give me a break. Was it a bad thing that Obama took Biden because he was white? There are several other black politicians he could have chose. or Hispanic. They each chose someone opposite of themselves. Mccain gets s*** on for his pick, while Obama is praised for his pick. All i am saying is that if palin is the tipping point in you voting against McCain, you were going to do that anyway and are just using her as an excuse. People dislike her because she appears completely clueless and has insulted many (fake) Americans, not because she is a she. Give me a break. That's a ridiculous assertion. She took on corruption in the party, but then committed her own ethics violations.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) I can't watch the video at work, but... how real is this? Any actual news on it yet? Seemed pretty legit. The Panthers were hanging around outside. Police probably told them to move 100+ feet away from the door.
  22. QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) According to the guy who called the police they were not blocking anyone from entering the building. Ok, standing at the door holding a nightstick. It's still voter intimidation. My point was that both sides will be guilty of their supporters engaging in dirty tactics today, so acting like only one side does it is unfair.
  23. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) Reports of Republicans trying to suppress the vote in Philly. Shocking. Reports of Black Panthers blocking polling places. Shocking.
