  1. QUOTE (joeynach @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 11:47 AM) I think Blue Ray won b/c its perceived as a more accessible technology, given that its on every PS3 and associated with every sony products. I just so happened it contained better quality. Oh I'd agree that quality isn't what won the battle there. It was just a counter-point to the VCR vs Beta argument that quality will lose.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) From what I can tell from the trailer and website, this is exactly his point. Scientists lecture about everything that happened after X point in time, but they have no explanation for what happened prior to that. I don't know about this movie specifically, but that's not the debate that Intelligent Design advocates such as the Discovery Institute or Answers in Genesis advocate. They throw out evolution all together. From what I've read on the wikipedia and NCES pages, this movie is more along those lines than trying to explain pre-Big Bang.
  3. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) yea i read that in the suntimes and i was wondering the same thing. that's really weird if a wild cougar just wondered into chicago They just recently spotted a cougar in Wisconsin for the first time in decades. Wolves are also starting to make it over there. I think the populations out west (Yellowstone in particular) are growing and migrating out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Cougar
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:58 AM) Well I doubt I'll be going to theaters to watch it, but if he gets a good discussion in the country going I say good for him. I have no issue with evolutionary theory, nor do I have an issue with there being a creator. I don't see how both ideas can't mix. The problem comes in when people try to push purely philosophical ideas and beliefs into the science realm. Science cannot deal with supernatural events and things like omnipotent creators. We can detect gases and background radiation and hypothesize that there was a Big Bang. We can't collect data on God. As far as I know, science does not try to deal with where the matter came from for the Big Bang or what anything was like before the Big Bang, but I could be wrong. Another problem that anti-evolutionists have is that they often confuse cosmology (formation of the universe) and abiogenesis (formation of life from non-life) with evolution. I'm not sure if this movie does that, but I really can't find much information on their website about the actual content of the film. The Wikipedia page for the film lists a lot of controversy. There's also this site run by the National Center for Science Education. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expelled:_No_...ligence_Allowed http://www.expelledexposed.com/
  5. My favorite part is her claiming that Tupac or Biggie could have been "great black leaders."
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 08:05 AM) I always ask this question when this topic comes up, and usually no one answers it directly... Would you understand your family/friends/children dying in a case where the US has a suspect who later turned out to have had information on a pending attack (and the US government believed they did before the attack), whom they didn't torture at all because they followed the Geneva conventions to the letter of the law? This argument basically boils down to "would you let emotional circumstances impact rational judgment, and should the actions of the US be based on emotional circumstances?"
  7. Another K on a pitch low-and-away for Thome.
  8. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 08:53 PM) i'm not watching - was that a missed hit and run? Nope. JD just caught standing there on a good move to 1st.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 08:49 PM) the game score is only 2-1 and everyone is seemingly hopeless and pessimistic. Cmon got to have faith in the team going to tie and take the lead this inning =) There, that's why. JD picked off at 1st.
  10. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) Eddy Curry's problem is his work ethic, not his high school competition. When you don't have to work hard for your success, you don't build a work ethic.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) I disagree with it. False, this is an apple and oranges comparison. In the NBA scenario there are teams, which is the equivalent of the employer, who want these players. They will gladly pay them, hire them, etc. So it would be like Microsoft wanting to hire people at the age of 18, but the United States govt saying that: No, it's not like that. The NBA is the parent organization and the franchises agree to follow the rules that they set. If I open up a new McDonald's, I can't just do whatever I please. The people in Oak Brook still retain some level of control. Comparing a parent corporation to the government is like comparing apples and Italian sausages. There is no law forcing the employment one way or the other -- its one company (the NBA) setting rules for its franchises on who to hire. They could do that, but they'd be offered even bigger contracts back here in the NBA. Pissing away tens of millions of dollars won't really prove your point.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) The problem is, how do you define "The will of the voters" especially at the current stage? There are so many different ways of counting, and it's entirely possible to come up with ways to count them that favor Hillary. Do you go with the popular vote? If so, how do you count FL and MI? If you count them the right way to minimize Obama's numbers and increase Hillary's, then it's still possible to come up with a count that gives Hillary the lead. But that minimizes the contribution of caucus states since fewer people show up there anyway, so how do you weight those correctly? And then you can throw in arguments about the impact of the electoral college itself, and that muddies the mess even further. A solid win or two by Obama to stretch the margin a little bit more would finally shut it up. But that's not going to happen until NC it looks like. I thought she was behind no matter what you tried to do to with the numbers?
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 08:08 AM) That is why we have competition and try, whenever possible, to avoid monopolies in the country. The market decides. And is the VCR war was any indication, quality will lose. Blue-Ray won out vs HD-DVD, so quality won there. I also don't have a choice for cable providers where I live. Comcast has a monopoly, so I'm stuck with them and their severely overpriced services. RCN and WoW are moving into other areas around Chicago right now, though.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 10:59 PM) I can't speak of Comcast, but DirectTV HD quality can't hold my cable companies jockstrap. Direct does have a few more channels but I really have most channels i'd ever want in HD. Now all I need is for my cable company to find a way to give me xtra innings in HD (I know you can get it if you had Direct TV, but it isn't worth the extra cost I'd have to pay with Direct). I've heard DirecTV's picture quality has gone up since they launched several new satellites this year. There's a noticeable difference in quality when you keep compressing everything. Like Joey said, where will it stop?
  15. QUOTE (The Beast @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) Prove it, wite. No need to use caps. I just think some people, including posters here and especially Ozzie are making a big deal out of nothing. Obviously I'm an umpire and I know for a fact, I may not like some of the people I'm working for, but it doesn't make me have a vendetta against them, and I won't change calls because I know I'm umpiring for someone. When people get out of line, you get thrown out, which is exactly what happened to Ozzie and which is exactly what happened to several coaches I've umpired for. consciously, no. Subconsciously, very possible, maybe even likely.
  16. Contreras 3-pitch K's Maggs, and Maggs is not very happy. Strike zone continues to wander.
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 11, 2008 -> 07:41 PM) Googled it and RCN dropped CLTV about a year ago, it seems. I don't even know what RCN is. RCN is another cable provider in Chicago. If they (or Wide Open West or any other cable company) were available at my condo I'd drop Comcast in a heartbeat.
  18. Good sac fly by Paulie. Looks like a really inconsistent strike zone from the ump today.
