Wow...that is just disgusting...it isn't necessarily anything I wasn't aware of, but reading some of the details of it is pretty disheartening.

I *think* we have a deal on the house I found that was not on the market...made an offer yesterday, and the seller called me today to discuss. So much nicer to just speak with a reasonable person over the phone and come to an agreement rather than to do this song and dance with the counters and counter-counters, and all that. Sending him a new offer tonight with what we agreed on over the phone...hoping to have an acceptance tomorrow... Then on to the next big hurdle...the appraisal...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) ESPN very much embraced the concept "There is no such thing as bad publicity" I could be wrong, and perhaps no one will remember Broussard's comments 10-15 years from now, but I think while they may win today, they may well look like fools several years from now.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 12:09 PM) Lol, what a reaction. /thread now Let's face it...they'd fire him for something in his contract and if he raised a stink, which they would, they'd settle with him for an undisclosed amount of money out of court, and then he'd turn up on Fox or some lesser channel in 6 months or a year. As Kyle pointed out, ESPN put him on OTL knowing he would say this. The entire purpose of the show is to explore issues like this outside of their usual sports-only context (thus the name). I think it was in poor taste by both of them to air it on the same day as the story broke.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:19 AM) But he didn't add any moral qualifier to it. He didn't say it was "wrong." He's saying it doesn't fit with Christianity (and again, his version of it). That's a key distinction here. Yeah, I agree with you...it's pretty hard to even give an opinion without "judging." My issue is more is Chris Broussard suddenly an expert on Christianity and how Christianity views homosexuality or is evolving in their beliefs about homosexuality, and secondly, why on earth was this necessary on the same day of the announcement? Just do it this weekend on the Sunday show and it is much less offensive to me.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Yes, one of the biggest problems with Christianity is the double standard in condemnation of some sins more so than others. Catholics who use birth control aren't told that they aren't Catholic, because being free from sin is not a requirement to be Catholic, but most priests will remind them that their use of birth control is a sin. Oh, they aren't if they are educated and part of industrialized society...but the message is a bit different in poverty-striken countries...

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) Are you just being willfully ignorant? If the bolded isnt judging, then I am not sure what that word means anymore. Don't forget this part: Oh, I did not realize it was Chris Broussard who was elected Pope last month...
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) Oh f*** that. This is a perfect example of the double standard that exists with people that cry out about discrimination and tolerance. Broussard says that Collins being gay doesn't compute with his version of Christianity and people are saying he should be fired. God, how dare he have a personal belief and some conviction to tell people about it! That's so progressive and tolerant to be understanding of other people that way. So accepting! I admit, when I first asked rhetorically if he wanted to keep his job, I was unaware he made these statements on OTL...that does put it in a little different perspective for me. However, this is precisely what bothers folks that are not big into religion: the need that religious types seem to have to openly judge others, especially when it is not really relevant or appropriate. First of all, one of the biggest tenets of Christianity is not to judge others, and yet, this is what they constantly do. Secondly, why does Chris Broussard, or any other christian, for that matter, feel that on the day of this announcement, it is appropriate or relevant what HIS beliefs or opinions of Jason Collins are? Who the f*** is Chris Broussard that any of us should care what he thinks? When did Chris Broussard become someone who's opinions on the righteousness of of ANYONE should somehow be relevant?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) It's not meaningless and I said this story is significant. I just don't think the ZOMG! FINALLY, A PROFESSIONAL SPORTS PLAYER HAS COME OUT, QUEUE THE PARADE! response was really justified. That's all. Maybe because you aren't gay?
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 08:00 AM) I don't think it's the same thing. Pretty much all but the most extreme fringe religions now accept integration and have for a while. I don't think that is ever going to be the case with homosexuality. It's not the same thing, which is why I mentioned it is a matter of degree, but it is still a step in a similar vein, and should be recognized as such.
-
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 07:37 AM) Come on Jenks. You have to understand that Collins coming out is, in fact, a big deal. On Broussard, I put the blame on ESPN for providing that platform. Broussard should have been smarter about what he said, but ESPN shouldn't have tried to cover this from anything other than a sports angle. I agree...ESPN should have been respectful enough of this day to hold off on bringing in Chris Broussard's religious beliefs into the discussion. Look how stupid all the idiots look now who voiced their beliefs against Jackie Robinson playing in the Major Leagues. Chris Broussard is going to look similarly stupid (though obviously not to the degree) for voicing his on the same day this story broke.
-
I gave him this reaction...
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) I agree with Kerr. You are telling me Rose cant back up Robinson tonight? Just some min off the bench? Apparently it is too much to ask him to come back and not be a superstar, even though everyone knows he's coming back off an injury.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) Wow, I am surprised Kerr said this. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bulls/post...ose-should-play I'm much more inclined to agree with that than what Wilbon wrote.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) If Outside the Lines wants to have somebody on who advocates the religious belief that homosexuality is wrong, that's fine, but that somebody shouldn't be an ESPN employee. Especially not one of their top NBA reporters.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 01:00 PM) Chris Broussard strikes me as a guy who'd be ok with a debate and not hide away. Not that he's confrontational, just firm in his beliefs. Some are afraid to really speak their mind because they know they'll be shouted down. But the problem is this is not about his personal beliefs. This story is not about Chris Broussard.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 12:57 PM) because it makes for great ratings well then he deserves the backlash he gets from guys like Bernstein...once you open that door, you have to face what comes through it.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 12:52 PM) see, this is where the opposition (people like Bernstein) takes things to an extreme. Just because you believe that doesnt mean you HATE the person. I believe homosexuality is a biblical sin. but the bible says to LOVE your neighbor as you love yourself. I'll love any gay person as a human being. But, when we all die, God will judge. Maybe I am wrong. I'll leave that up to god. Does believing being gay is a sin make you a bigot? I believe that depends on your actions and I'd never treat a gay person any differently than a straight or bi person. I don't want this to turn into a big religious debate...you have every right to believe whatever you choose to...but why does he have to use his position to make this statement? Why do we care what Chris Broussard's personal religious beliefs are?
-
QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) Chris Broussard saying Collins is living in sin and rebelling against God. Oh brother. Seriously? Does he want to keep his job?
-
QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) Courtney Hawkins has his strikeout percentage up to 55%. There have been 8 games where he had 3 or more strikeouts, and his season just started on April 5. Our top prospect, correct? Lovely. You bring such an optimistic viewpoint to things...

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 29, 2013 -> 11:07 AM) What is a reasonable price to pay for an engagement ring? If it was mentioned before, I didn't bother to look through the entire thread. Depends on how much you love her I think a month's salary is a reasonable amount, but it also depends on what stage you are at in life...are you planning on getting married soon? Are you paying for that wedding? Are you planning on buying a house soon? Having kids? Already have kids? A lot just depends on what your other financial responsibilities are going to be...

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 28, 2013 -> 12:16 AM) Thursday night: "Emery is worse than Angelo!" Friday night: "Still pretty bad!" Saturday: "Great drafting!" Well, I will say this...if you are confident that you can get some solid contributers in the following rounds, it gives you a lot more wiggle room to take a chance on a high-risk, high-reward guy like Long at 20.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 27, 2013 -> 11:45 AM) That's my argument against Ramirez. $9M for a bottom-of-the-order hitter is too much even if he is a very good defensive SS. According to sabermetrics he's worth it though. You're basing the opinion that he is not worth it on what though?
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 27, 2013 -> 11:31 AM) Fringe guys aren't going to be the difference unless you have enough top line talent acquired through the draft, trade, or free agency. If you save yourself $10-15 million a year because of those fringe players, that can mean a lot of top line talent you are able to acquire through those methods you mentioned.
