    Job Hunt Thread

So...I've only been in my current role formally for about 6 months...but I have been approached about a new opportunity...it's fairly exciting but pretty risky...potential for big time success but also failure. Will involve pretty regular exposure to senior execs. Current job is pretty cushy after a lot of big initial challenges...a bit hesitant to give it up, but also afraid of getting bored. Take the risk or stick with the cush?

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) Right, but if you fail you aren't in 400k worth of debt I get the feeling 2ndcitysaint doesn't want to be in $150k debt either...
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 02:31 PM) Indians are offering Youk 2 for $18 million. I'd rather have that than Keppinger, to be honest. There's nothing wrong with Keppinger, but Youk, even as inconsistent as he was last year, is still a better player. This is moot unless he accepts that offer.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 12:36 PM) you've made this exact post over and over again in this thread while ignoring a lot of the advice we're giving you. that said, if you'd rather run a food truck, and you're good with working security till you can afford one, then by all means do that! (though I'm not sure how much you'll be able to actually SAVE working as a security guard) I've read food trucks are even more difficult to profit from than restaurants.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 11:29 AM) As a general statement, I don't like the idea of Floyd straight up for Saltalamacchia. That is a 180 IP starting pitcher for a guy who is going to get maybe 300 PAs. I even like Saltalamacchia, and would consider trading Floyd to Boston with Salatalamacchia as part of the package, but they need to include a prospect or two as well. For sure, but part of the benefit is the $. Seems to me that with the new drug testing, a 4.00 ERA pitcher isn't worth what he used to be, so I dunno that he is the bargain anymore at $9.5 million that some of the more stats-oriented folks have argued in the past.
  6. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 05:27 PM) I love the Revere trade. He is basically Juan Pierre with less power, and the Twins have a 'better Revere' with Aaron Hicks coming up (stronger arm, more patient at the plate) sometime in 2013 Plus 2 more pitchers to help stock the roster
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) I think you have a package figured out although not sure Granderson is the target. If he was I would say there would be an OF getting dealt as well. That doesn't make me think we're going to get too much in return...
  8. I don't want to give up much for a 31 year old that is not under contract for very long.
  9. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:18 AM) I was assuming he was talking trade. I can't think of anyone but Bourn. And I'm not sure I'd call him a "big" hitter. Yeah, when I said available, I was thinking available via trade. I can't see it being Bourn either. One would think he means a LH with power...I have no idea...
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 10:08 AM) Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS If the #chisox can clear money (look away gavin floyd), they will start thinking seriously about a big hitter, likely a lhh So who are the best LH hitters that could possibly be available other than Hamilton?

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 08:30 PM) Lol just 30k like thats not a big deal. I gave the number they have on the door a call with no answer, left them a message. Finding the money probably won't happen but I'm interested in seeing how much it's going for. Come on now, you have to be willing to pay your dues. Who is going to give money to a guy to open a restaurant that has never done anything except cook frozen food at a bowling alley. I am not saying you couldn't do it, but unless there was a very wealthy family member around, it is going to be difficult for you to convince someone to invest their money in such a proposition. Now, if you were to start cooking at a small place, due that for a few years, save up some money to perhaps get some culinary training, then move on to a job in a better restaurant, move up the totem pole there, go start as a chef at an established place, start putting that money aside, etc., etc...this is how people end up opening their own restaurants. I think in the course of the last 6 months to a year, I have seen you go from security guard to Beachbody coach to sitting around at your friend's place freeloading weed, and now you are going to open your own restaurant with no money and no training. You need to find something you enjoy and are good at, that has some sort of marketability to it, and start and the bottom and work your way up. Very seldom are things just handed out to anyone other than the very wealthy. And it doesn't sound like you are very wealthy. I know a lot of people have tried to give you supportive messages in this thread, but you've got to put the work in and stick with it for awhile if you want to make it happen.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 04:02 PM) I would say our young pitching is attracting a crowd, package that with a nice pen arm and maybe a halfway decent prospect or a starting OF'er and you may have something there. Interesting
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:50 PM) Looking at the lineup posted above, is this a roster that is one or two keppinger-type plugs away from competing for a World Series or even a division crown? Thats the exact questions that the Sox front office is dealing with right now and I believe that they dont think they have enough. I wish we wouldn't have signed Peavy so we could just sell right now.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) I'm not sure I want Jeff Keppinger to be our starting 3B for more than a year or two... What do you see changing between now and a year from now that would suggest we'd have someone better?
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) Chavez signed for one year and $3 million with Arizona. Truthfully, I would rather have that deal. I think we would be right back in this boat we're in now next year if we had done that.
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:50 PM) 3/$12 works for me. Even if it's a complete waste, that isn't exactly an albatross. I feel like risk of failure is similar or better compared to Youk and we don't have much invested if it does fail. Good low risk deal and Keppinger gets more than he ever would have imagined. I think we need more players like him...he's a smart, scrappy player.
  17. He's a nice little player...I like that Hahn can see that. This is a good sign for Hahn's first real move. Would have preferred 2 years, but oh well.
  18. QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) Like Howard Wolowitz said, "Bernadette doesn't care where I get my motor running, as long as I park it in the right garage." Hah...that is a good one.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) Doesn't that assume a desire to cheat in everyone, though? That doesn't seem right. You don't think that is the case?
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 06:53 PM) Wanting is not having. He could get 3 years, I don't doubt it, but I think he's more likely to get 2 with an option Once the Yankees sign their man, the market should start moving...
  21. Jeesh, now Keppinger supposedly wants three years... The hell with these bums.
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 07:34 PM) The Sox really need to get a young cornerstone hitter. If they could get Upton for that and a even a little more, I'd do it. Yeah, I am sure their demands are pretty extravagant, but one can always dream on a slow Tuesday in December.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 06:34 PM) If the Sox had the room in the budget to even consider the addition of Mike Adams (who's likely to get $4-6 mill a year), then I think they'd have the room to offer a contract to Eric Chavez too. He is the riskiest of all the 3B out there, but if used in a platoon role (.908 OPS vs RHP, .382 vs LHP last year), you can at least attempt a platoon of Morel and Chavez at 3B which helps keep Chavez healthy and gets Morel in a spot where he is more likely to succeed. And yes, he had a .908 OPS over .274 PAs. He's still a pretty damn good hitter, even if some of that is lefty porch aided. I'd offer him a 1 year deal with a relatively easy to reach vesting option or mutual option for the 2nd...something like $5 mill for the first, $8 mill for the second. I doubt he gets anywhere near that on the market, and then you can pencil Eric Chavez in against RHP at 3B. If he's hurt, you're screwed anyways, and he replaces the lefty power that is lost by AJ's departure. I'd rather just go with Keppinger and say the hell with the Morel experiment, but I suppose he is just as injury prone as Chavez.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 07:32 PM) One thing to keep in mind, $7 million of Paulie's salary this year is deferred into $1 million increments from 2014-2020, and the additional $25 million a year kicks in for TV next year. The Sox have some wiggle room even if they are being straight about payroll remaining the same. It was most likely deferred for a reason though...my guess is that money is already spent.
  25. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 05:01 PM) There are just a ton of rumors right now. Supposedly hes only getting $600k per year more. Going to have to wait and see, I get the feeling that Alvarez may actually coach the Rose Bowl. There is supposedly a state law that requires Wisconsin to post notice of the job for 30 days, so no hiring can be done quick. You should apply
