  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 08:15 AM) If moves that seem risk-free wind up having a non-zero probability of totally imploding on you, then you simply have to re-calculate your risk estimates. Maybe you assume that the most risk-free move still has a 25% chance of being an utter failure and ask what that does to your whole team if it implodes. I never stated that it was risk-free. Even something that has a 5% chance of failure does actually fail 5% of the time.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 08:00 AM) Being substantially more risk-averse might be the right move. For a metaphor...it's the difference between going all in and having a King high and all in on a straight flush. One of them is a much better bet in most cases. Well, Adam Dunn may have been one of the most risk-adverse signings we could have possibly made. Production has been staggeringly consistent, and he possesses a skillset that traditionally declines at a very slow rate as a player ages. Rios, on the other hand, was far more risk-intensive (obviously).
  3. CBS Power Rankings Are pretty hilarious this week, including this little excerpt:
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) In this league though, the player's contract is guaranteed. In the NFL you can hold the guy responsible by making him inactive then cutting him. If **** just happens, then isn't it a mistake to put yourself in a position where **** can happen? Well of course you want some level of risk aversion, so maybe this signing influences that, but you can never eliminate all risk.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) So who is responsible when you make a freakishly bad nearly-unforseeable signing? Why does someone have to be responsible? The player isn't performing. There were literally no signs which foretold this. Sometimes, s*** just happens.
  6. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:44 AM) I should point out, those posters were right, they were just referring to the wrong player. Who knew Dunn would be so so terrible. Always thought he was overrated, but man is he bad. And I personally have zero expectation of him getting out of his funk this year. The Sox only hope is that his struggles are related to lost confidence and potentially being out of shape. Because if it isn't those things, we are in trouble. My eyes tell me he has real slow bad speed and a swing that isn't in the hitting zone very long. Basically put, he looks done and if he doesn't have a good start to the year, I will consider him Done. That skillset usually does not decline rapidly...I think it's a mental issue. Hopefully PK can help him with whatever he did in 2003-2004 to get his confidence back.
  7. QUOTE (Paulie4Pres @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:41 AM) Hahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahaha..... Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Phew....that was a good one. Read a scouting report.
  8. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:39 AM) check out the pitch counts for this game 3 Indian relievers threw less than 10 pitches. Their pen will be fine tomorrow. The Sox, not so much. We won't need ours.
  9. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:38 AM) Ozzie sticking with Pierre worked. Pierre was showing signs of being his normal self by and large not much more than 6 weeks into the season. Clearly Ozzie has been rewarded for that because Pierre has been pretty much what he's always been and that is a solid leadoff hitter. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible. But I'm sure people will still say he deserves no spot on a MLB roster. I vividly remember multiple people telling me how the Sox were starting a guy at the top of the order who wouldn't even be the 25th guy on any other roster. I remember the same...Juan's been our second-best hitter for about 2 months now. Always seems to be a second half player as well.
  10. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:36 AM) I would rather he played hard. He does play hard. He's so damn athletic that he makes it look easy.
  11. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:33 AM) My kids were watching a movie so I watched the game on-line and via Soxtalk until the 7th and then watched the game when they went to bed live. I put the movie back on and watched the 14th on Soxtalk. You guys owe me. talk about your misplaced modifiers...
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:32 AM) LF was playing way to deep there, if Juan hits it over your head its game over on a sac fly anyways. He was pretty f***ing shallow...
  13. You guys can say what you want about Rios but he's in the front of the line when a teammate succeeds. I respect that.
  14. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:30 AM) Never make the 1st out at 3rd. Smart play actually. Already in scoring position. There was one out already.
  15. QUOTE (Bhay99 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:29 AM) Now Ozzie will have Morel try and steal 2nd and it will fail miserably
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:16 AM) Hawk keeps mentioning the attendance of other games, and he seems to be stressing how high the attendance was more than usual. Shot at our crowd maybe? I think he's just bored and reading box scores off his iPad.
  17. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 11:56 PM) Dear drunks. The build up scream thing you are doing is annoying. I thought that was funny....AhhhhhChooo!
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 11:40 PM) Ok, what's the franchise-record for triples in a game? I'm sure it happened in the 1900's, but still. 6, in 1920.
  19. How sad is it that Morel looks like a stud after watching Gordon ht.
