QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 12:51 PM) I thought the finale was pretty solid. I would have preferred to have the fates of Ronnie and Vic reversed, I think...but in the end, the fate left for Vic might be worse for him personally than what Ronnie was left to face.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:59 AM) They are not getting better this year. Write them off and see what happens for the rest of the season. Start fresh with them in the spring. Enough is enough they are not just underachieving they are epically bad and there is no hyperbole there. I like that McNeil and Spiegel got a hold of cowley B&B and the morning guys seem to like him and egg him on. The SCORE was getting pretty chummy there with cowley or a while. The guy really wants to be jay jr. The funny thing is the mariotti was gone before guillen yet it is mariotti's replacement that is going to get guillen canned. I have no problem with them sitting Dunn almost every game until it is entirely clear that we cannot win this division. Same goes for Rios.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) Only a few times. Quentin did vs Angels this year in the 8th inning, and he popped up to right field. For someone like Konerko, you'd think a 3-0 fastball would be perfect. It's not just 3-0, either. It's 0-0. Our hitters consistently take first-pitch fastball and miss out on the best pitch they are going to see for the entire at-bat.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) It's in our best interests to win baseball games, and continuing to play Dunn and Rios anywhere in the lineup with any consistency doesn't help us achieve that. Absolutely. But you've got to balance your immediate needs with your long-term goals as well. You've got 20-25% of your payroll tied up in Rios and Dunn over the next few years. Getting nothing out of them in the future is going to handcuff this team every bit as much as it has this year. You've got to try and mitigate the damage by getting them back on track, so that you don't compound the $20 million you've wasted this year into $80 million over the term of their contracts. The best way to do that was to try to get them consistent PA's in the lowest-leverage situations possible, with the hopes that they can turn things around and get back on track. I agree that Dayan should have been brought up earlier, but from appearances, it was Ozzie that was blocking that move, not Kenny. Ozzie also could have been batting Dunn and Rios lower in the order rather than in critical spots like 4th and 5th, in order to minimize the damage to our scoring opportunities. He did not.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:39 AM) Of course Ozzie could have not played those players...... I don't really have a beef with Ozzie for playing them...it's in our best interests to try and get these guys going again since we have them signed long-term. What I do have an issue with is his insistence on batting them in critical positions in the batting order. This only works to exacerbate the problem more. Hard to defend hitting Dunn and Rios anywhere but in the bottom third of the order, even when we're already running Beckham and Morel out there.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) KW just better pray that Stewart can be a #4 or 5 starter, as Hudson continues to look like he's going to be a #1 or 2 for a long time. He's not proven he's a #1 - maybe a #2, but I think he needs to show more. He's not even the best pitcher on his own team right now. I don't dispute he has performed quite well since virtually the day we traded him, but let's not make him into an ace quite yet. He's pitching to a 3.6 ERA in the year of the pitcher in the National League in a division in which there are zero competent offenses.

Finished up The Shield last night. Good series. Glad I decided to watch it. Interesting ending to it all.

QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:19 AM) This is quite a heated discussion going on with Cowley. I don't know that I heard this before, but apparently Kenny bumped into him and called him a 'f'ing piece of s***' It seems pretty obvious to me that the relationship between Kenny and Ozzie has really hurt our team this year. I don't blame him. It's pretty clear that Ozzie and his kids use Joe as an unofficial mouthpiece to air all their gripes against the Organization without having to take responsibility for it.

8/30 GT - SOX vs Twins - 7:10pm CDT - CSN
iamshack replied to knightni's topic in 2011 Season in Review
Stewart will be fine. This Twins lineup isn't going to knock him out early. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) Yeah, sure. Now go back to telling us how Alex Rios is not really that awful. At least I have original thoughts, unlike yours, which are just well-after the fact nonsense and alcohol-induced pointlessness.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:56 AM) Last time I checked, neither the Tigers or White Sox were known for their second half runs. I get that we just swept a god awful Mariners team and won last night against a Twins team that I don't even recognize. But we've seen this movie before. They're going to HAVE to beat Detroit. And when I say that I'm talking a minimum of 5-1 against them and play pretty much lights out against everybody else. Realistically, win 4 of the 6 and make the other 3 games up out of the remaining 24. The Tigers will choke as their pitching staff wears down and their old asses break down.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:50 AM) Maybe that $4 million could've been spent on the draft? And it was a terrible move. A washed up steroid abuser, one who had been on the DL multiple times? Just sign Thome for $1 million and there's no need for Manny. You are the biggest Monday morning quarterback I have ever seen.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:49 AM) I am loving the changes, I just think they have been made too late. We're 5 games back at the end of August, that's quite a feat to overcome and the Tigers have only been playing better too. Well, you let us worry about our heartstrings and you can watch episodes of Breaking Bad or something
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) I'm guessing poorly as usual. The team hasnt been underachieving because management hasnt given them enough talent to win. Dare we forget Ozzie's horrendous in game managing decisions and horrific lineups? Both of them need to go, stat. ? I'm confused.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:18 AM) I'm not discounting that, but all this guy does is scrap and scratch for optimism. And taking 4 of 5 is always a hard thing to do. This is a f***ing fan site for the team...I think it's a little more bizarre how much doom and gloom comes from most of you, considering you come here every day, than it is weird for a guy that posts here to be optimistic. Seems like you guys are the real gluttons for punishment.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 11:12 AM) I truly believe you fart rainbows. If we can take 4 of the remaining 5 this week, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) Ozzie and Joe must really be scared, because he is on the warpath. I do love the irony of Ozzie's lapdog tweeting about other writers hugging Kenny's leg. Joe is practically humping Ozzie's leg over the past couple of weeks. Tweet-fest Cowardly-style How is this guy allowed to cover the team still? I understand that everyone has a right to tweet, but is it not clear that Cowley clearly cannot cover the team objectively at this point?

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) I was about to comment that he still owes a lot of people money. He owes his creditors $19 million still. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) Lets be honest. They both suck and need to go. Let me ask you this, Sqwert... Considering what a buffoon most of you think Ozzie is, both in his treatment of players and the way he manages a ballgame, how can you fairly evaluate KW's performance when the manager of this team has such an effect on the product he puts on the field?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) Plain and simple, Rios should not be starting anymore. I can't believe people are saying he's been better of late, as he's 9 for his last 52. Play De Aza in CF and Lillibridge in RF. If you have the guts to bench Dunn, then bench Rios (still can't get over he didn't know the game was done last night). You can't deny there was a few weeks, spread apart, including the week of games in Minnesota and Baltimore, and then last week, where Rios was hitting the ball very hard and did knock in some crucial runs. Unfortunately, that success has been short-lived and few and far between as advanced scouts have made it clear not to leave anything middle-in to Rios and force him to hit pitches out over the plate, which he has very rarely proven he can do. Why Ozzie chose to put him in the cleanup spot, however, is anyone's guess. Regardless, the experiment has failed and it is indeed time to put Dayan there.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:57 PM) Tigers Rotation-- Scherzer- KC, Chi, Min, Oak, KC, Cle Fister- KC, Cle, Min, Oak, Bal, Cle Porcello- KC, Cle, Chi, Oak, Bal, Cle Turner- KC Verlander- Chi, Cle, Chi, Oak, Bal Penny- Chi, Min, Chi, KC, Bal Playoff Rotation- Verlander, Scherzer, Fister, Porcello They can't possibly play under .500 with that schedule. Most likely not, but this is baseball...anything can happen. We can go a long way by beating Verlander 1 of those games and taking 5 of the 6.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 08:27 PM) The only reason a team would interview him for manager would be because of his name. He needs to be a coach first. I think the major plus of that experience is to learn to manage the egos involved and to deal with the media, not because the game is any different at the major league level than in the minor leagues. -
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Ozzie is going off again....I cant stand this guy What's he b****ing about now?
