QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 06:14 AM) Well, they were all drafted by either Beane or Sandy Alderson, who was doing Beane's thing before Beane took over. That was another gripe with the movie, Alderson's name wasn't mentioned once. And Zito, Mulder, and Hudson were hardly mentioned either... The point I was making is that they were drafted using scouting, not the data crunching methods shown in the movie...

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:07 PM) Was this a little hint of Ozzie's lifestyle when you said wife n girlfriend? Not flaming, just wonder if u suspect he is a candidate to go on the show, "Cheaters." It certainly used to be his lifestyle, not so much anymore... Firsthand knowledge of this...

QUOTE (Felix @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) The gist was proving that you don't need a large payroll to win games. The A's did a damn good job of that. Whether or not they won the World Series is irrelevant, especially given the lasting impact it's had on the game. That's what happens when you have three of the better pitchers of the first half of the decade on your team....which were all drafted by scouts (oops!) Watched Hereafter last night....freaking horrendous. Watched The Adjustment Bureau tonight....pretty solid, although a bit corny.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:47 AM) I think the biggest thing is that many of the relationships or stories that have been posted here are in the high school/college/right out of college time period, where most people aren't that serious about finding somebody for the future. And since this is the relationship thread and not the hook up thread you won't hear much about the "successes" people may have just fooling around. I will say this, it's tough being a guy that wants something real and not just a hook up while still in college. Hookups are fine, but it's not what I really like nor go for that much. I've had girls tell me left and right that Im the guy that they want to date, but then they go and hook up with my roommate who gets a ton of girls. So yea, I think it's just a difference in what people are going for at this age. My experience in college was basically that if you wanted to do well with girls, you just never really took much of anything too seriously...do your best with your classes, obviously, but outside of that, most of the girls want the happy-go-lucky, fun to be around, funny, smart guy. If there is a girl you like in particular, you just play it cool, keep things light, and before you know it, you're waking up next to her 3 times in one week. Then all of the sudden she can't get enough of you, and if you still want to reel her in for the long term, you do it then. But the guys who came across like they wanted something serious BEFORE they even hooked up with a chick, yeah, they usually got passed over for the fun guy that doesn't think too much past tonight's kegger...

Yeah, but no one talks about their fun single moments in this thread... Like the other night, when I banged a milf who drives a car worth more than my house... I mean, think of the fun!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:05 AM) Any chance the Raiders upset the Pats? Unfortunately for the Raiders, no. Had last week not occurred, yes. Now Brady is going to be in crazy mode and be almost perfect. You're fuct. -
I really don't give a s*** about the Rays way. I want a manager who understand how the game of baseball, in this era, should be played, and can implement that. I also want a manager who understands how to bring young players along and give them the best chance to contribute to the Club, rather than one who seems to want to make it as difficult as possible.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 02:59 AM) Well drunk Russ or not, I will not be asking her aout for Sunday. Her friend and her talked to me about some guy that apparently is coming in from Australia (where she was abroad last semester) and is staying with her for 3 months and will be dating once she gets here. So I brought my neighbor to the barndance instead and we had a great time, but did feel bad when this girl kept trying to talk to me but my neighbor would be all over me. Oh wellz, that's what you get I guess. I tried to be nice, I gave you more than a few chances, but you pretty much lied to me and led me on, and I absolutely hate that. So that's the end I guess. I'm sorry to hear that, Russ...don't worry...there are plenty of fish in the sea! She's just not the one you want to mount on your fireplace!

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 02:35 AM) Expect Tito Francona to become a major candidate for the White Sox job in the next few days. I think he already was today....
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 01:53 AM) That's a nice article on Martinez, but it's a fluff piece. Expect one (and maybe several) about Sandy, and perhaps hundreds talking up Francona if he is indeed gone. The main thing is, what will any of these candidates do to make Adam Dunn become a Major League player again? What will they do to turn Rios around, or make Beckham reach at least half his potential? What will they do to make sure that Sale, if he is converted to a starter, becomes a #3 starter or better? Etc. etc. These are all pretty tall tasks and if they can't be done then whoever is managing is going to have to deal with the resulting s***storm from the fans and media. I think there is especially too much Dave Martinez love in here. Tampa Bay is not the market Chicago is. They are not the baseball city Chicago is and neither is their fanbase as passionate. Furthermore, everything is peachy in Tampa ATM while the Sox are deep in the s***ter. On paper Martinez is highly qualified, without a doubt, but he has no idea what he's in for, nor does any other non-veteran candidate, and there's no reason to believe that just because he knows the game like the back of his hand he is also capable of managing a bad team with multiple albatrosses in a major market full of angry fans, and staying positive throughout the process, persevering, and making it through the light at the end of the tunnel. I disagree...the Rays have managed to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees with about 30% of their payrolls...I think there isn't a lot that you could throw at the guy where he wouldn't know what he was in for...it's not like he's been the bench coach of the Rockies or something...

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 09:48 PM) Not to use a college basketball analogy but Roy Williams at Kansas had a winning "culture" to the tune of about an .820 win percentage. Virtually all of his assistant coaches were huge flops when they became head coaches including Matt Doherty who just about killed Carolina's program he was so bad. Fair point, but I think there are some coaches that don't do a particularly good job with mentoring their subordinates. Maybe Williams is one of them.

QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 08:48 PM) Even in college it's a bad mix. If he wants a fling, he can get drunk and go after any girl; but, if he REALLY likes this one and wants a relationship, he needs to approach it in a more mature way. This is what makes college go round! A more mature way? Come on...it's a big group thing...everyone will have a blast...he'll be loosened up and relaxed and on his game, as long as he doesn't get comotose or something. Then if it goes well this time, he can do the mature thing and take her out to dinner or make her dinner or something...
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 08:38 PM) Honestly, alcohol and dating is a bad mix. I don't want to get blasted around a girl that I like, and I don't want her getting messed up around me. The frat house rules should not apply if you want a serious relationship. Except for the fact that he is in college, on a college campus....this is what college kids do...

What an ill-informed article. He makes absolutely no mention of Sergio Santos, as if he was not aware Sergio was on our team. Basically, the article is about as good as if I had decided to write a review of the Tigers right now, without doing any research first. Is Humber really a free agent? I was not aware of that...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:49 PM) Maybe JR should have his eye on some of their development people. One White Sox problem is it seems a lot of the guys called up in recent years looked like they started playing baseball 2 weeks before they came up. Throwing to wrong bases, missing cutoff men, getting picked off, horrid baserunning............Maybe that's why De Aza looked good, he was developed by someone else. It may be reason to be at least slightly excited about the 2 they received for Ozzie. Well it's no secret that there are some significant questions about the White Sox' developmental prowess. One thing at a time though. Considering the direction this team is likely to go in over the course of this manager's tenure, I'd definitely prefer that he has shown a willingness and an ability to work well with young players. I don't think anyone believes that hiring a new manager is going to cure all of our ills. But nothing will ever change unless you start addressing the problems somewhere. This is a great opportunity to begin doing that.

2011 ALDS Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers Thread
iamshack replied to Brian's topic in The Diamond Club
Wilson pitched 15.2 innings against the Rays this year, giving up 3 ER. His last outing against them, on Sept 1, was a complete game shutout. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 08:39 PM) At least with the Sox everyone blamed the hitting coach or praised the pitching coach. Now you're saying the reason Evan Longoria is a great player is because of the bench coach? We have no idea the effect Martinez or Alomar has had on young players. None. I never said anything of the sort. Evan Longoria is a monster player, and most-likely would be regardless of who had the pleasure of drafting him. What I said was that Martinez has been part of a culture that has handled several young players extraordinarily well. This probably occurred as a matter of necessity more than anything, but the fact is that Tampa managed to make the playoffs in a division where the two biggest superpowers in baseball reside with an abundance of young players coming through their system.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) There is something to be said for knowing how to deal with a young player who comes up and doesn't live up to the hype immediately too, and that has been seen more in Cleveland and Chicago than Tampa. Yeah, that's a nice thing and all...but I think I'll still stick with what Martinez has going for him.

2011 ALDS Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers Thread

I think this will prove to be the most exciting series of the Divisional series'. With that being said, I'm definitely betting on the Rangers in tomorrow's game. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) I dunno, cleve ands been in a selling mode since 07, and they've been trying to bring people along te whole time, Marte, Cabrera, Carmona, Choo, Santana, LaPorta, Perez, Masterson, probably 5 other guys I'm forgetting. The difference is that they haven't had a successful core in the way the rays have, and the reasons why are worth considering too. Well, the whole point is not who has worked with more young players. It's who has managed to actually be successful with more young players... There is more evidence of that in TB than in Cleveland.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:06 PM) Harold Baines and Joey Cora were bench coaches. This is baseball not splitting atoms. I'm pretty sure Sandy Alomar Jr. has seen just about every situation imaginable. The he was a first base coach thing means nothing to me. He's been around baseball all his life and he's a bright guy. So which is it, DA? Is it just baseball, or is it "just because you stand next to Maddon doesn't mean you are the next Joe Maddon..."? You seem to be contradicting yourself a bit. The "it's just baseball" line might sit with me better if we didn't just go through a few years of some head-scratchers. I agree that Dave Martinez is probably not going to be Joe Maddon cloned, as the guy's brilliance extends well-beyond just the statistics (I think he's a freaking master motivator), but Maddon also strikes me as someone who would take the responsibility of mentoring a younger coach very seriously (just as he learned from Scoscia). I think the model of mentor/student seems to work pretty well as far as coaching goes and we've seen it work across all sports. Signing Martinez up would probably be a pretty safe bet.
