  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) I do agree he's coming off terrible so far, but thankfully he has time to get these things figured out by next February. He sounds fine in this interview right now.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:06 PM) I want him to not sound like someone completely unprepared for what's to come... sadly, that's what he is, though. Give him a few weeks to get used to being addressed and interviewed as a manager...honestly, who gives a s*** how he comes off in these first few interviews? He said the staff is something they will discuss amongst themselves. I don't really understand what's lacking in that answer.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 01:57 PM) Robin sounded so f***ing clueless in that interview. Lawrence: "Do you have any idea what you're looking for in a staff?" (clearly talking about coaching) Robin: "Well, it'd be really easy to say I'd like 25-game winners." After Robin goes on for 3-5 minutes about wanting good pitchers, and wanting Mark Buehrle back, Law tries again... Lawrence: "Have you given thought to who you'd like to have on your coaching team?" Robin: "Oh well, that's something Jerry, Kenny, and I will have to discuss." GMAFB Do you want him to come out and say who they are hoping to hire?
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) Of course KW would be CRAZY to take this stuff to court. With some of the things that have gone on with Kenny, he needs to just drop this whole thing with Cowley and move on with Ventura. I'm sure they are going to look into some kind of libel charges or whatever. From what I understand, Kenny has a few skeletons in his closet, but let's be realistic...just about EVERY person who has occupied a position of power in a major corporation has skeletons in their closet. When the stakes reach a certain point, stuff happens and people do things that would harm them personally, their families, and their organization if it were known publicly. They'll most likely try and put a scare into Cowley to get him to soften his vindictive nature a bit.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 01:39 PM) Dan Bernstein Great stuff on Mac & @MattSpiegel670 with @cst_Cowley just now. KW hinting at lawsuits, but he'd be crazy to invite sworn depositions. Crazy to invite sworn depositions. Maybe Bernstein knows some things that Cowley does to. Or maybe it would be crazy to invite sworn depositions of the high-level conversations and the inner workings of any major corporation. Give me a break.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:45 AM) But still, by his own admission, he had no real serious thoughts or plans to manage until the Sox offered him the job. That's simply not an effective way to run a business to my eyes. And how many businesses have you run, Balta? GMAFB. History is f***ing filled with companies that succeeded with leaders who didn't have all the experience in the world, in a hell of a lot more complicated industries than Major League f***ing Baseball. You are so much smarter than this, and yet you're just on your period and so you want to be pissy. You're much better as a poster when you actually use that incredible brain of yours, rather than your whiny "woe is me" mood. Sack up and analyze this the way you do everything else.
  7. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) Cowley on Ventura... and how Cooper became Judas. So now Joey is coming to the rescue to save face for Guillen. So Cooper is a bad guy for asking for an extension, and telling Kenny about the circus act going on in the dugout? Go f*** yourself Joe
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) With his nice guy attitude and player friendliness, I fear that the players won't have much of a problem ignoring or walking all over him once they're used to him. Milk, I respect your incredible ability to be consistently and unwaveringly pessimistic, but now it seems like you're just going to grasp at anything you can here... Your experience argument is a fair one, but other than that, none of us really know much about what kind of manager he's going to be. Can we at least reserve SOME judgement until we see his team play for a few months?
  9. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:15 PM) What is a little disconcerting about the conference call was that inKW's opening comments he stated that he didn't expect Robin to hit the ground running and be "another Tony LaRussa" right away but that the first couple of years would be a "growing process" for him. Also both KW and Ventura repeatedly stressed the importance of support from the other guys in the organization. When asked about what kind of clubhouse rules he would implement he answered that he didn't know yet and he didn't ask KW about it yet. When asked if he had talked with Frank Thomas about possibly being the hitting coach he said he would trust the guys in the organization to put the right pieces in place. Overall, he didn't sound like he was yet comfortable with the thought that he was now the manager and didn't come across as a take charge type of guy. That doesn't mean he's not going to turn out to be a good manager but the way he came across this afternoon was not too impressive. But at least he'll be better than Ozzie has been the past few years for sure. He just took the job today. Last week he probably wasn't considering it. Spring Training is 4 months away. He has never managed before. Let him put a plan together, with the help of the current infrastructure, that will set him up to succeed.
  10. I wonder what Benoit was wearing that bandage for...
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) Or perhaps not. Manager salaries are not as available as player salaries, we may never know for sure what they are paying him. I'd really be shocked if it's not around $500,000
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:24 PM) He could have said, 'Thanks but no thanks" You act like Ventura needs money, he made over $60mil in his playing career. Dave Martinez needs the money, Ventura doesnt. Ventura could buy Ozzie guillen. uhhh
  13. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:17 PM) Did you listen to the conference call/press conference this afternoon? He's probably been a part of 5 press conferences in his life before. He's played in two-thousand some MLB games...he'll get accustomed to the press conferences...Jesus, drop it
  14. Interesting comment from Steve Phillips...despite his sexual proclivities, I really respect his opinion...and the point about Martinez not having a real presence is one I hadn't thought of...but again, I'm not sure Ozzie had a real presence either...he tried to overcome that by being the class clown instead...
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:07 PM) Seriously, a player doesn't care whether the stuff the manager is preaching has worked before? I don't buy that. Seriously, what kind of stuff is he going to preach? The triangle offense? Again, layoff the Beam.
  16. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:04 PM) Including the Sox organization. Can anyone really say how he will work with players? He's never been in any type of role to teach, mentor, coach or anything. Seems like a huge gamble to let him start now. What if he has huge issues communicating to players or getting them to follow his lead. ?? They know him very well. They know how he interacted with others as a player...what kind of leader he was...how he is perceived as someone still involved in the game, around the League, etc. In my opinion, managing is not so much about repitition, but rather how you think, whether you are a leader, how you face adversity, how others perceive you, etc. I'm sure they have a pretty good idea about those things, and confirmed their thoughts with his work as an instructor.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:56 PM) What exactly has he done to earn the players respect? Worked his way up? Gained experience? Done anything to establish himself as wanting this job? Layoff the booze. Players could give a s*** about earning your stripes as a manager. What they most often care about is whether or not you played the game.
  18. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) I'm willing to give him a chance. Everyone here knows he's going to be the worst manager ever. But remember, a poll here showed that a majority of posters said they managed better than Oz, all Robin has to do is be as good as the average poster here and it's a major upgrade. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81618 Which is exactly why it is a huge joke that people here seem to think they know what kind of manager Robin will be. I can accept the criticism in regards to the lack of experience. But there is so much to managing that includes working with people and egos, and as far as that goes, almost none of us know how skilled or unskilled Robin is.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 06:05 PM) I like the hire but Robin came across terrible on that conference call He's got 4 months to get his s*** together...he'll be fine.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) Why does everyone think Ventura is going to be a yes man? To the best of my knowledge the guy has refused every coaching job hes been offered, wouldtn that suggest hed only take the job if he was allowed to do what he wants? I don't like Bruce Levine, but he knows Robin a bit more than I do...and he said Robin is the farthest thing from a yes man that Kenny could have hired.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) Kenny did say they were going to ask permission to ask for a bench coach that Robin wanted. 22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) I would argue that 1 to 2 years of being a 1st base coach or 3rd base coach isn't exactly a ton of experience. So I'd say Ozzie had his early successes despite limited coaching, Girardi the same. Honestly, what good would that even do you as a manager? I would think that experience would help you become a better base coach, but other than that, what? Those are just bang-bang decision-making skills you have to hone.
  23. Just please spare me the Batman jokes... Good for you Robin...now show us something...

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) American Horror Story wasn't bad. Definitely has me wanting to see more. The potential is there. And I now have a favorite opening theme song/intro. Yeah, it was pretty well done...I loved the opening scene...wish the wife was hotter though.
  25. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:55 AM) Fail! Yep...should have gone with my own sentiments back when he was on our team...I did say several times that I thought Jackson would be a dangerous starter to have in the playoffs. I knew I was f***ed when he started locating his breaking stuff immediately following the first two runs crossing the plate... Oh well, I definitely knew their was a chance we could see the dominant Jackson as opposed to the inconsistent one. And yeah, I've been really off so far for the baseball postseason. I should have waited til the LCS, as I seem to do much better betting that for whatever reason.
