  1. Guys, the debate is appreciated, and it's fine to voice your opinions, but please keep it civil. There is no need to get rude or personal about it. Caufield is just throwing some ideas out there. If you don't agree with them, fine, but don't crucify the guy for throwing something out there. When this sort of thing happens, others don't volunteer their ideas for fear of being ridiculed. And that doesn't help anyone.
  2. Tim Brown over at Yahoo is saying Thome and Konerko are available as well... http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ti-v...o&type=lgns
  3. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 09:40 AM) I think you ought to buy one of those things they show on late night TV so you can hear people talking at a distance. Hell... I would. In Vegas, you might pick up some really interesting conversations. Hah, I wonder if that would work in a crowded place... I'm going to get my resume ready and hand-deliver it to Kenny...
  4. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) Alright!! Enjoy! Are you going to post via text message? Send us a few 'live' tidbits and pictures? I will definitely share my experience with the board, whether it be in the forms of pictures, info, etc. One thing I do have going for me is I know the person who controls the reservations at one of the restaurant/bars in the Bellagio. She has asked me to give her a list of names and she will alert me when a reservation is made or when she finds out they are at the restaurant. She will also get me any table in the place I want (within reason), so I might be able to get close to some of the action...
  5. I don't think this is likely, but I do agree that some sort of major acquisition is likely. Our payroll is not going to drop to $65 million the year after winning a division title, while also raising ticket prices. This sort of speculation is exciting, and encouraged, as far as I am concerned. Kenny's unpredictability and penchant for making big moves that require big stones is one of my favorite parts of being a White Sox fan. Can't wait for the Winter Meetings. Bellagio, here I come!
  6. Any ideas on what he might use that money on, Fathom?
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) I really like it. A strong farm system, and in so little time, who knew? We actually have bullets to make real trades now if we wanted. We still have holes to fill at the MLB level now obviously but it's only December. Hey now, I am on record several times on this site saying Kenny could turn our system around almost instantly simply by trading our veterans...not many agreed....
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 07:22 PM) You're the guy that called Justin Morneau the most overrated player in baseball. Period. Citing his poor September. Ignoring the fact he hit about .330 with runners on base in 2008. His poor September made you say he wasn't there when his team needed him most. Did you see Javy's last 4 starts including a playoff start? He's incredibly underrated? 16 1/3 innings, 26 hits, 25 runs. I suppose the 18 strikeouts is all that matters. The one thing I do like about this trade is we can finally stop arguing about Javy. So anyone have any ideas on where the hell Kenny is going with all these moves?
  9. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 06:51 PM) And Javier Vazquez sucks. We all know your opinion on him....
  10. Interesting. Rosenthal claiming Reyes in NOT in the deal. Gammons is saying he is.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) A pretty good idea. Let's put it this way: We arent unloading money just for the hell of it at this point, we are making space for a purchase. Rock, stop being so cryptic! By purchase, do you mean a FA acquisition, or a trade acquisition?
  12. Rosenthal saying Reyes is not in the deal... Tommy Hansen?
  13. There has to be something else in the works.. Could it be Peavy?
  14. Rosenthal is the one guy who seems to know when something is going to happen...my guess is this deal is done. Good luck, Javy, I appreciated your efforts here. Say what you want about Javy, but there is something to be said for a guy who takes the ball every single 5th day for you. I'm starting to think I wouldn't be shocked to see one Jon Garland back on the southside...
  15. I honestly just think maybe Kenny was being respectful to the Japanese journalist who called him. Better to say we really like these guys than to say "We aren't very impressed by the Japanese free agents. There's no one there that we care to sign, especially considering the bust that Fukodome was this past season..."
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Is he related to Roger? What do you expect me to do, dive for it?
  17. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) Considering that Dye has averaged 34.25 HRs/season and 95 RBI/season in his 4 years with the White Sox, I think you are nitpicking. Dye's numbers would probably be fairly similar at the Great American Ballpark, considering it is a bandbox similar to ours. Take away a bit of production for his increase in age, but add a bit of production for the lesser pitching in the NL and I think it works out fairly similarly.
  18. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) Is it really too much to ask for people to name the original source and provide a link? One thing that has become a problem on here is the posting of material from another site without the inclusion of a link which is actually illegal but that's just a part of it. If you see something interesting on MLB Trade rumors or rotoworld or wherever just follow the link they provide, copy the address and include it in your post, it's not hard. This way people (well, I) won't have to scour some rumor site looking for a small blurb from some Dominican newspaper. Plus, and I think this may be the key, there won't be anything lost in translation like there has been so many times before. I understand the point of what you're saying, but there is nothing illegal about linking information to mlbtraderumors.com. Mlbtraderumors.com sources their information, and puts that information into their own format and adds their own comments, which makes it a "compilation" which derives from other sources. Such a compilation is fully copyrightable in it's own right, and therefore, there is nothing wrong or illegal with using it as a source. Doing so is actually just as correct as sourcing the original source (if one actually does then take information from the original source). Be that as it may, a good rule of thumb is to consider the information you want to share and what context you wish to share it in. If you feel that sourcing the original info makes more sense given that context, then by all means, use that. But I feel Tim at mlbtraderumors puts things into a good context already, so I usually just use his, and then if need be, add any of my own commentary that I feel is necessary. Ok, sorry to get all serious and stuff.
  19. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) People, mlbtraderumors.com is not a source. They have no original news on the site just a nice collection of links to real news outlets, if you're going to post rumors please include the actual source and a link to that source. And ALWAYS include a link especially if you're going to copy and paste information off another site. This is the original source: http://www.thelotd.com/lance/blog/2008/11/24/tuesday And this is the original story: Kalapse, I eagerly look forward to your posts on this site, but let's not turn this into a PhD dissertation. We all understand what mlbtraderumors is, and even for those who don't, it's not like the "real" sources you are referring to are anything more than purposefully misleading leaks, absolute speculation, and/or old news that got distorted as it traveled down the grapevine. The bottom line is that other than perhaps Ken Rosenthal, there simply are no credible sources when it comes to hot stove rumors. Sure, a link to the info posted is always preferred. A link to mlbtraderumors, which is a warehouse of rumors which also contains links to other sources, seems perfectly acceptable considering the currency in which we are dealing.
  20. From mlbtraderumors.com: 5:42pm: MLB.com's Scott Merkin notes that the Mets and Phillies are two of the six teams on Dye's no-trade list. Dye's agent, Bob Bry, has not been contacted by Ken Williams in regard to a possible trade to either club. The Reds don't appear to be on the list, though, so Williams would not need clearance to make a deal with them.
  21. QUOTE (yoyozuna @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) I heard he is asking for 4/48. Do you think KW would be willing to spend that on a SS? Yes, but only because Furcal could also fulfill the leadoff role in our lineup....otherwise, not so much...
  22. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) Ditto. The "mystery team" is supposedly the Braves, but I suppose we could be in on Furcal....I don't personally believe it, however.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) There are indications that Sheets, if offered arbitration, would accept it. Dempster is coming off a huge year. Lowe may want that money, but he won't get it. Burnett will get it but he's better than Javy and still is overpaid. The draft picks don't mean as much as you think, especially with teams picking near the bottom. That's a couple million saved instead of giving to a guy who probably is a longshot anyway, and nowhere near as good as the guy they signed. There is no way Javy gets $15-16 million in today's market. Bill James has been coming out with these books for years. Some guys he gets exactly right, some guys he gets wrong. He works as a consultant or something along those lines for the Red Sox. They seem to admire his work. If he thinks Javy will have a 3.80 ERA next year, maybe the Red Sox will pay up to get the loser. Well, I guess Burnett may have had better seasons than Javy, but I'll take Javy's healthy arm over Burnett's injury-ridden self any day of the week....I actually do think Javy would command between $13-15 million per.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) Yes, but most 15-16 year olds arent playing pro ball. Its pretty hard to compare what he has done to a typical 19 year old in the states. That's a good point, Rock. The bottom line is, none of us know. I don't even believe our scouts know. We're just going to have to throw him out there and see what happens. If he appears as though he can handle mlb pitching (as Alexei did), then he will get a shot. If he does not, than he will go down to AA. As of now, none of us have seen squat of this kid, so to speculate on where he will be next year is foolish.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 01:36 PM) I'm all for clearing up payroll for upgrades, but Rock's proposed lineup had no other upgrades made with that money. Right, I don't think you can make judgments of the team after a Dye trade but before any accompanying moves. As has been said before, Kenny is not going to cut $40 million off the payroll this year without any other accompanying moves...it just won't happen...
