QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 06:58 PM) If they were smart enough to do that it could have been huge. That money could be the difference between a bargain guy like Mulder/Garcia and being able to make a push for a top guy like Sheets or captain cheeseburger. Well, keep in mind, with Crede's latest injury, I don't see him being resigned. And with Floyd/Danks/Quentin/Ramirez, there is money available. It's just a question of where they want to go with Thome, Griffey, etc.

I actually like this deal, assuming we give them nothing of consequence. It will give us another lefthanded bat, and put Pauly on the bench. The defense will take a slight hit, but I think the offense will take a step up. It also gives us a potential stud bat off the bench in Paulie, assuming he heats up at some point, as well as a platoon situation when the matchups call for it with Thome. I like the addition for the stretch run, plus it will generate some fan interest... We can figure out the rest of it after the season.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) He's not coming here. Seriously, where would he play? Why would you trade prospects for two months of Manny? You have Carlos and Dye on the corners. Neither of them can play CF if you want to move Swish to 1st. Thome is the DH. What is the point in discussing something that there is ZERO logic to. Once again, read the post. It was half serious. It was for fun after a loss on a Sunday afternoon. Lighten up. Isn't this why "Trade Winds" exists? Did you think we had any more of a chance at Chipper Jones? At Roy Halladay?

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 06:55 PM) Tell me again what this thread has to do with the White Sox? Perhaps if you read the first post...

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives...deadline_1.html This is almost the exact scenario that I laid out a few days ago. The Red Sox pay Manny's salary, trade him to a contender for major league ready talent then swing a deal for Teixeira. I thought the entire idea of the Red Sox acquiring a 1b was ridiculous?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) Why is this thread even open. We have ZERO corner OF spots and ZERO DH spots. We are probably one of the worst fits for Manny in the league. Stop trying to put Konerko etc in a deal for a player that doesnt fit on our team. Well thanks for your wonderful contribution! Perhaps we should talk about acquiring Kei Igawa instead. Would that satisfy your hunger for excitement more?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 01:05 AM) I'm not going to say that I'm certain of this, but from what I've seen of Carlos is that he speeds up quickly...good short-distance speed, which is perfect for LF and RF...gets decent to good reads on balls, but is pretty slow, all things considered, when in a full sprint. When you have to cover as much ground as a CF does, not being fast is generally a problem unless you get hall of fame reads on balls, ala Jim Edmonds. Well, who ever claimed this organization knows who plays the best centerfield defense. If that was the priority, Brian should start there everyday. Anyways, it was just a thought on a dull Sunday afternoon. It wasn't meant to be so much serious as it was fun.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 08:18 PM) I've noticed that Floyd likes to give up a fair amount of unearned runs, too. Yep, the one thing I don't like about Floyd is his mental makeup. He's a deer in the headlights. Contreras is a stubborn bastard. Buehrle seems to get shaken when errors occur. Vazquez doesn't trust his stuff. Which leaves Danksie. He's mah boy.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 07:49 PM) It's not just the "good lineups". Look at what most people are saying here (not some, those are the, um, not so smart fans, and I'll let you determine who those folks are). Most people here are saying he has some of the best stuff in baseball, and that's what keeps him around, but he blows up mentally at times and it costs him dearly. You want a Cy Young pitcher? I would love Mark Buehrle's head with Vazquez's stuff... that right there would be a Cy Young candidate every single year. Just a thought. Buehrle is the guy that can't pitch over the errors....I don't know that any of our pitchers are especially strong mentally....maybe Danksie...

Ok, ok, excuse me for asking. No fun.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 04:54 PM) But what would they do with Konerko in the meantime? If he's splitting time with Youkilis at 1B until Ortiz gets hurt again then they're greatly hurting their offense by replacing Manny with an inferior talent in LF and taking away ABs from their .929 OPS 1B (who had a higher OPS than Konerko last year as well.) It's just hard to talk positive about a guy who's still do $28M, posted a sub .850 OPS last season and is probably going to hit 8th or 9th tomorrow. They do what teams like the Red Sox and Yankees do: they sit his ass on the bench. They pinch hit him. They give him spot starts against guys Youk struggles against. This is the same team that had JD Drew on the bench. That took back Mike Lowell when everyone thought his career was over. It's certainly not an ideal situation for them, but it certainly gives them some protection should Ortiz's wrist not hold up, and a very solid bat off the bench should it not.
-
QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) If they actually make a push to trade him, they're going to try to get him out of the AL first, and I don't think they'd want to deal him to an AL contender, especially. And I very much doubt they'd want PK. I don't think we match up very well, at all. Well I obviously knew this topic wasn't going to get much support, but jeesh, you guys are just no fun. You think we aren't that good of a match until you start researching their other possibilities....

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) David Ortiz is healthy and playing right now, assuming he does eventually re-aggravate his wrist injury what do they do with Konerko in the meantime? That's an awfully old, expensive, risky and well pretty bad backup plan/bench player. I don't think you acquire a 32 year old, $28M player with a .672 OPS and NO versatility to act as an insurance policy for a seemingly healthy player. Wrist injuries are extremely difficult to come back from. I'm not saying he'll re-injure it, just that there is a reasonable probability that he may. And your analysis of Paulie is valid, outside of the fact that you didn't mention any of the positive things he has done in his career. You just rattle off this year's numbers as if that is Paulie in a vacuum. I'm not saying Paulie has a ton of value right now, but he certainly has more than you give him credit for.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 03:40 PM) The only thing left for Manny to do in his career is to DH. If the Sox dont exercise Thome's option next year and trade Paulie i would highly consider him for DH next year as a free agent. I highly doubt Boston trades him, nibody is going to want to take on that option. I don't see the option as being that big of a burden, except for the fact that the team that ultimately acquires Manny will have had to plan to do so and I am not sure that many teams now could do so on such little notice. However, we are one of the teams that could. I really think we match up with them about as good as anyone. It's just a question of whether they would even deal him to us if we wanted him...
-
QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 04:31 PM) Red Sox have the AL All-Star starting 1B. I don't think they're looking to downgrade at that position. Obviously, but what if Ortiz's wrist doesn't hold up? What if he reinjures it and has to miss the remainder of the season? They could then plug in Paulie at DH and swap he and Youk occasionally to keep Paulie sharp defensively. Let's face it, the Red Sox are not going to improve their on-the-field team by trading Manny Ramirez. Which is probably the reason they have always changed their minds when considering dealing him in the past. But if they really think dealing him would be addition by subtraction, I think taking back Konerko and some decent prospects would be about as good an offer as they might get. Who knows how badly they truly want him gone, but they sure are acting as if they do this time...
-
Theo Epstein has said he will deal Manny Ramirez if Manny would waive his 10 and 5 rights. Manny has since said he will waive his no trade rights should the Red Sox work out a trade. With Ortiz just coming back and still a bit of a risk because of the injured wrist, might the Red Sox be interested in a package built around Konerko? Possibly something involving Poreda and Getz? I know Manny has quite a bit more value than Paulie right now, but considering Manny's $20 million options in 09' and 10' may need to be picked up in order to make a trade work, as well as Boston's desire to really rid themselves of him this time, I think his value comes down a bit. Swish could then move to 1b, Quentin could move to center, with Manny taking over in left. Would that OF defense be decent enough for this to be a positive impact? Would Manny's antics scare Kenny and Ozzie away? Would the Red Sox trade him within the American League? Would this lineup scare the s*** out of other teams? 1) OC 2) AJ 3) Manny 4) Q 5) Thome 6) Dye 7) Swisher 8) Alexei 9) Crede/Uribe/whomever Thoughts? Sorry, bored on a Sunday after a loss...

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 03:01 AM) I've no idea what Liriano's slider looks like right now, but seeing as how that's the pitch that made him throw his arm out in the first place, I can't imagine it's nearly as good anymore. Jimmy might not be able to catch up to 97 coming from the left side, but Quentin and Dye sure as hell can. Not to hijack the thread, but from what I understand, the Twins have let Liriano go back to the same arm slot he had when he injured himself, after originally forcing him to use a new arm slot when he first started rehabbing the arm. Since he has made the switch, he has begun dominating games again, and you can see a clear distinction in his numbers. His k's went way up, and his era and hits allowed came way down. His slider, as you referred to, which was once the most devastating pitch in baseball, is still being thrown, but they are trying to get him to work more off his fastball. Obviously this is a huge risk, both for the Twins and Liriano's career. But this is what he wants and this is what produces the dominant numbers he is capable of. It just remains to be seen whether he will blow out the arm again or not.

Over the last 28 days, Big Jim has a .489 OBP and a .643 Slugging percentage for a 1.1317 OPS...he has secured my vote...

QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 05:10 PM) It's a thorough and intellectual criticism of a faulty claim. "Five to ten years." Yeah, for a guy who's been good but not that good at all. No one ever said he was going to be the "next Roy Halladay." And scouts and other experts project pitchers to be serviceable for the duration of their careers all the time. Simply because you won't do it doesn't disallow anyone else from doing so.
-
QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) Jesus. One game at a time, man. Well, I agree with your general point, but you've been riding Gavin since he got here....wasn't he possibly the "worst pitcher in major league history" last year at some point? Give the kid some credit where credit is due...
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) Yeah, pitchers struggle. You apparently can't put the past behind you and understand that pitchers can change and grow and become good after they have figured it out under different coaching. His peripherals are much better, his ERA is good, he's pitching deep into ball games, and his stuff is pretty damn good too...yet for whatever reason you can't let go of the past. Gavin Floyd is a good starting pitcher and will probably be a solid #2-4 from this point on for 5-10 years. But because he struggled for a couple years, he's going to struggle for all of time. That makes sense, because that's not what pitchers like Halladay do....... Great post. Halladay was once a piece of crap too, you know...

Crede to DL, Fields Called Up, Loaiza Released

Just an update on the Cabrera/Dodgers stuff, from John Heyman at SI: L.A. has been talking about bringing Cabrera back to that area, as first mentioned on Foxsports.com, and there would appear to be plenty of chance there for a deal since the White Sox are a rare team that's deep at shortstop -- if the Dodgers are capable of pulling a deal off, that is. Cuban import Alexei Ramirez, who's showing some confused footwork at second base, is thought ready to man shortstop, giving the Sox unusual flexibility at a difficult position. It is believed the White Sox are targeting one or more of the talented Dodgers kids. But the Dodgers, who at one time also showed interest in Sox third baseman Joe Crede, have been taking a hands-off approach on most of their prospects -- if not all of them. One executive who recently spoke to the Dodgers got the impression that not only are top young players like James Loney and Matt Kemp untouchable, but so are somewhat lesser talents such as Blake Dewitt and even Andy LaRoche, whose stock has been falling for many months in the eyes of some. Word also has gotten around that the Dodgers have taken calls on free-agent-to-be Derek Lowe. However, a trade involving a standout pitcher like Lowe would likely leave them with a major rotation hole. The reported talk of a trade that would bring Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano for Lowe and top young outfielder Kemp was shot down by those in the know. While some Dodgers people think Kemp still has some maturing to do, until further notice, I remain doubtful the Dodgers could execute a small deal, much less something that big. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writ...ml?eref=writers
