QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) From Ubaldo Jiminez. Ouch.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) For the most part, yes. Some would prefer to wait to see if he makes it through waivers. Obviously, I hope they do, but if I was them I'd prefer to use the 4 mil to sign someone overslot, to toss onto the pile they'll have ready for Teixeira, whatever. We'll see. Well, from what I saw (not sure if we are both looking at the same board), but they are actually worried he won't fall to them...

QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 03:42 PM) It most likely has something to do with him being hit on the arm by a pitch. Was it bad? Like in the elbow?
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 03:40 PM) Fields was just pulled in the 1st inning of today's game for a pinch runner. Oh my! Any injury?
-
Interestingly enough, I just meandered over to the O's board and their fanbase seems absolutely in favor of picking him up...(not that it's their decision).
-
I would think Fields would get dealt before Quentin. And hopefully not both.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 02:58 PM) Because Kenny Williams is your gm. That's 9.5 million dollars now on Crede and Uribe for this year alone, we DFA'd one within four months, and we can't beg anybody to trade for the other. Now that is excellence in management right there. On a side note, hopefully this means they think Ramirez is ready to roll, and hopefully if so they are right. If you want to take shots at Williams, by all means, go ahead. But wasting money has not been one of his downfalls...

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) As long as there are members of the 2005 team remaining, this problem will exist. Sox fans simple overrate anybody in connection with that team, from KW to Ozzie to the players, and nobody is more overrated perhaps from that squad that Joe Crede. You guys are flat-out crazy if you think every team doesn't have fans who overrate their own players. Go to any other team's message board and you will see this.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Boers & Bernstein confirm he's been DFA'd. Alexei Ramirez must be the starting 2B now... They must expect that DFA'ing him will force someone to pony up something...

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) You know what, I am sick of these "dark cloud" type posts when something that someone says doesn't jive with your view or the views of the see no evil crew. How the hell is anything of what I said negative. There are 2 baseball players competing for one position. I have an opinion, my personal opinion, that Josh would be better at it for the short and long term and would give the sox a better chance of winning. And thats what I want, the sox to win. I also would rather have Quentin or Anderson playing and Owens not, so I guess that makes me miserable as well. This is a message board. These threads are here to invite debate, sometimes lively and definitely sometimes over the top. These are individual opinions. Nothing that is said here means anything in the real world. It is just lively discussion and banter. In the end if Joe plays it isnt the end of the world. But I would rather see what Josh can do over the course of a long season. Who knows he could be great, and then he could be bad. And if you continue to read the thread, you will see that I have nothing against actual debate about baseball. What bothers me is the "this is the stupidest organization in the history of the world, led by the stupidest man on the face of the earth" posts that are quite prevalent anytime Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, or our farm system is brought up. It's pointless, counterproductive, and ironically ridiculous all in one. As fathom and others have said, there needs to be a venting thread for that kind of bs commentary. I'm damned tired of reading it in every other thread on Soxtalk. If that is the sort of discussion that people want, they can get that anywhere. I come to Soxtalk because it is the only place where INTELLIGENT discussion about the White Sox occurs.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Since when has striking out been such a bad thing? I'd rather have Fields swing with authority and miss than have Crede just do his typical weak pop up to the right side when he's trying to protect. Weren't Tigers fans complaining about Granderson striking out too much after his first full year? That worked out well. Look, I'll flat-out admit to you that Fields will ALWAYS strike out too much, so I am willing to accept that part of his profile at the plate. But you can't offer much to convince me that he has nothing to gain by getting 200 more ab's in Charlotte right now. In Joe's first extended call-up in 02', he posted an .816 OPS in 200 ab's. Last year, Fields posted a .788 OPS in 373 ab's. Clearly, Joe was not as polished as a hitter as he appeared in those 200 ab's in 02' by the eye and/or the numbers. I'm arguing that Fields is not either. I don't want Josh to sit in Charlotte for an entire year unless we are in a pennant race and Joe is playing very well. Otherwise, I'm just saying Josh isn't going to implode and have his career ruined by being there for 2-3 months.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) Actually, a few weeks ago, he was saying that he's not used to facing 95/96 mph fastballs like he's been seeing in ST so far. He said that he didn't see that in the minors, and then when he came up last year, pitchers were throwing close to 91/92 mph. No one on this site knows more about the Intl League than me, and I guarantee you there's not a lot of fireballers down there. There's a reason crafty southpaws like J.P. Howell dominate that league. So what is he striking out on 196 times down there?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) Fields had a 1.07 OPS vs LHP. His bat needs to be in the lineup, period. Unfortunately, that was in only 106 ab's. The .677 OPS against RHP came in 267 ab's.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:26 PM) Fields has quite a few homers to the opposite field. He's also our best breaking ball hitter. Quite simply, he struggles against good, high fastballs. The only level he can get experience with that is in the majors. That's bs and you know it, Fathom. He struck out 196 times in 647 ab's in Charlotte. There's plenty of experience he could gain there.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:26 PM) Fields has quite a few homers to the opposite field. Right, and he struck out 125 times, too. Maybe he could hit a few singles and doubles to the opposite field instead of his all or nothing approach.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:24 PM) well, .100 points in the batting average is a lot Not when you're talking about it being .240 vs. .135 it's not, no. And that's ONLY because Josh is 6 for his last 14. They both have been disappointing this spring.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) What would be the benefit of him getting at bats against inferior competition vs getting at bats and continuing to improve in the majors where he belongs? He's already as good as Crede has been offensively, if not better, why make him take a step back in AAA? That makes zero sense. AAA isnt the magical land of baseball learning, he has nothing left to prove in the minors. So now you're going to argue that Josh has nothing left to learn as a hitter? There is no one in the minor leagues from which he could learn something? He needs to learn more plate discipline. He needs to learn how to put the ball in play to the opposite field more. He needs to work on his footwork and timing at 3rd base. Look, I don't disagree that Josh wouldn't substantially hurt the team if he were the starting third baseman. But I also don't believe that he had nothing more to learn as a baseball player, whether it be at Charlotte or not.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) He's improving with time, produced better than Crede offensively already and is in spring training as well. He's a better player for the Sox, hands down. You cannot honestly argue their springs against one another. That's just not fair, considering Joe's coming back from injury. Secondly, it's not exactly a David vs. Goliath comparison. Fields is hitting .242 to Crede's .135.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) It comes down to for the White Sox Josh Fields>Joe Crede. No whining needed. The only positive is that KW at least is waiting for some value for Crede, thats if Crede ever hits the ball. Well, I like Fields. I think he has some major power potential, and I think he has the athletic ability to continue to improve defensively at 3b. But I don't believe he is such a complete hitter at this point that he has nothing to gain by getting ab's in Charlotte, or that his progress will somehow be "stunted." For all those that rip Jerry Owens' statsheet apart last year because of his September success, take a look at Josh Fields' August and September. He hit 9 bombs and 24 RBI in August, which is very solid from that standpoint, but he also put up a whopping .773 OPS that month. How one does that with 9 homers in a month, I did not think was possible. In September, which many commentators have told us is a skewed month for statistics because of all the call-ups he improved to .936, which is obviously much better. I don't believe Joe has any permanent role on this team in 08' unless the team is competing with Detroit and Cleveland, in some part because of Joe. Otherwise, he will be moved and "the future" will begin with the ascension of Josh Fields.

Ok, so I just wasted several minutes of my life reading through this entire s***storm. This thread is like every negative poster on Soxtalk's wet dream. Why is it that some people actually enjoy when the organization does something they disagree with so they have a chance to tell everyone else how much smarter they are than the general manager? As much as all the pro-Fields people want to poke fun at "Crede's Crew," and facetiously compare Joe to Brooks Robinson, one would think Josh Fields was David Wright or Ryan Braun. The world will not end if Josh has to go to Charlotte for a few hundred ab's, guys. Just like the world will not end if Joe is traded to SF or LAD. But wow, why do some of you even watch the team or read the newspaper if it makes you so damned miserable? Some of you are incredibly-gifted whiners.

QUOTE(2nd_city_saint787 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 05:54 PM) I was watching the Nats/Tigers game today and they had Peter Gammons on talking about a plethora of things, one of those being spring position battles throughout the league he says he thinks it'll be Lexi....He seems to have pretty good speed, if Owens isn't our CF would Lexi be an option for the lead off position or do you guys think it'd be to much pressure?? 1-Lexi 2-Cabrera 3-Swish 4-Thome 5-Kong 6-Dye 7-Fields or Crede 8-AJP 9-Anderson or Quentin i dig it I'm just guessing here, but I think that you're probably going to want a guy with a stronger OBP to leadoff. That doesn't mean they think that way though...
-
It's already the 8th episode? Jeesh....I thought we were on episode 5 or something... From what I understand, they had 8 episodes done before the writer's strike. They are in production for 5 more now. So if the show starts back up in April, we will have 5 more episodes this season. The remaining 3 episodes that were planned for this season will be incorporated into the next two seasons.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) Anyone know where we rank this ST in terms of batting average and home runs? We are 15th in BA with a .283 average, and 26th in homers with 14. We are 6th in doubles though with 50. -
