2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) Given Thibs history of turning ordinary talent into good basketball players, I would bet on the former. Yet another reason why it would be terrible if the Bulls FO traded him away. The guy can clearly coach and develop.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 10:04 AM) This Snell thing is becoming very interesting. I haven't been able to watch as many games as I'd like to so do we think he's actually turning into a real basketball player or is this just a hot stretch? I feel like he's shot really well all season. He'd come in and drain a three or two on 3-4 shots. Now he's getting extended minutes and expanding his game beyond just being a spot up shooter in the corner. He's cutting towards the basket, hitting floaters and even making some runs in transition.

Sounds like there's a huge disconnect between the movie and expectations. Not sure why people thought it'd be as graphic as the book, and without the explicit nature of the sex scenes, what's left? My understanding is that the books are really poorly written and there's not much substance. So you're making a movie on poor substance without the sizzle that attracted people to it.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 02:34 PM) But Jews targeted by Muslim terrorists in a jewish grocery store were just 'random victims of violence'. Exactly. I'd be curious to see what the FBI stats are for investigating hate crimes. It's gotta be like 10-1 minority victims versus white, even though we all know if a white person is killed by a black person there's a really good chance of some hate/animosity there. About the same amount as this crazy person.

The Beheading
QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 11:15 AM) No it is not the same. You have placed the US at the top of the moral capital punishment pyramid. Perhaps the US is too lenient on criminals and don't execute enough. Your assumption is the US is the moral perfection on the planet and that anything that differs from ours is wrong. There are countries, a lot of them, that have stopped capital punishment. Where do they fall on your list? Can those countries say that all of the countries that kill criminals are wrong? I think you can take what he said to mean that the US is better than most. Not sure anyone would agree that the system is perfect. But there IS a system in place. Unlike ISIS.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 02:28 PM) No, I am suggesting that the Muslims running around crying about 'Islamaphobia' need to STFU for a moment or three because while there is a chance it was religiously motivated, their specific religion may not have mattered. Christian, Buddist, whatever, wrong place, wrong time. Doesn't help that the POTUS' statement basically affirms the race-baiting, saying that people shouldn't be killed because of their color/religion.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Feb 13, 2015 -> 11:22 AM) I thought a lot of the struggles against the zone happened with Tate in. Michigan didn't have anyone concerned with Tate, allowing them to clog the lane (taking away Hill flashing to the middle) and cheat the zone toward Hill, Nunn, and Rice on the perimeter. Tate being a bad shooter can really hurt the offense. I like the way he moves the ball and runs the offense. But until he can be something of a threat to get his own offense, the half court offense will struggle with him in the game. It's a combo of Tate and Egwu that really made the offense die. If Egwu could just learn to get the ball in the post, dribble once or twice and kick out to a shooter it would be great. For some reason teams still do a half double team on him (cheating of Tate is probably a lot of it), leaving a guy open. Yet he rarely makes that pass.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 10:37 PM) So can anyone think of another player who is as great of a free throw shooter as Jaylon Tate but that is also an absolutely horrendous jump shooter? I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like it. It is incredibly rare for guys who are fantastic free throw shooters to not also be good shooters but I can't think of any great free throw shooters who are terrible shooters. He's a bad shooter, but really he only takes about 1 jump shot a game and it's usually a 3 pointer at the end of the shot clock. Not a shock that a player bricks those. He can finish around the rim, at least that's something. Last night was maddening. How do you dominate a team 21-2 over the last 10-15 minutes of play but play so horribly the first 30? Credit Michigan for nearly stealing that game with maybe the worst starting line-up in the Big Ten, but yikes it was like they were Tom Crean running up against that zone. They seemed totally unprepared and got really lucky to get that win. I'll take it, but man is the Wisconsin game going to be a beat down. If we don't lose by 20 i'll be happy.

Student Loans
QUOTE (kevo880 @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) Is the standard term a 10 year term? I never changed the term, but with the pace of how I am paying them off there is no way they will be paid off in 6 more years. About 40k of my students loans are private and about 19k are federal. The federal has an int rate of about 6%, my Discover private student loan is surprisingly only 3.12%, but I only have about 7k of debt on that one. My chase private loan of 31k has an int rate of 4.76%. How strange is it that my federal student loans have the highest int rate? I think it depends on the type of loan, at least with federal loans. I have a bunch of loans, some were on 10 year terms, others (I think some of my consolidated loans) were 25. Not sure about private. My interest rates range from 1.75% to 6.5%. It varies based on when you obtained them I think. Back in the early 00's they were giving away money for free practically. Then that started to rise right before the recession. My wife (masters degree) and I (law degree) have an ungodly amount of school loans. I'm planning for us to have everything paid off by the time we're 40, which is f***ing depressing, but we'll see what happens as we add more kids (and more ridiculous day care).

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 01:28 PM) Its unfortunate that these kids dont come from rich neighborhoods, then it would have been as simple as renting an apartment in the right district. The lesson here is if youre going to cheat, dont get caught. Because Id be hard pressed to find any competitive person who didnt try and get an "edge". My eyes can't roll hard enough.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 01:52 PM) Nice, thanks for the info. When I head back to MI this summer to visit family I will probably go the Credit Union that I have had an account with for most my life and see if it is worth consolidating with them. I know their interest rate on credit cards is much lower than anywhere else that I have had a credit card with so hopefully they can help with the student loan int rat. Just keep in mind that consolidation resets the term. If you were on a 10 year term and you have been paying for 4 years, you're going back to a 10 year term. At least if you do it via the federal consolidation program. Not sure if you can negotiate that or not with a credit union.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 06:34 PM) Just to be clear...you're criticizing anyone who's certain about it and not criticizing the DOJ/law enforcement for investigating it as a possible hate crime also, right? Edit: One thing worth thinking about...even if it isn't true at all that it's a hate crime, "3 people in a small community" being killed would also drive a fearful response in that community whatever it is, so "reporting the fact that people in that community are now fearful" would probably be an accurate thing to do as well. Yes. Look into it, consider it, don't assume right away that's the case.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
I'm not discounting that it COULD be a factor. I'm criticizing the straight away assumption that it IS a factor here. There's another, more concrete explanation. The facebook stuff and his opinions are just media fodder at this point. Racist claims are big for the media because both sides have strong opinions about it.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 04:36 PM) According to the article caulfield posted, this was an "ongoing dispute." Meaning this was not a spur of the moment loss of self control like a road rage related incident would be. We don't know, obviously, but it's more likely that if you're having an ongoing dispute with someone, you get upset that last time and finally snap, just like road rage. I don't know why you'd jump to racism if there's a beef between these people that pre-existed their murder.

UNC Shootings....Hate Crimes or Random Targeted Violence?
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 11, 2015 -> 04:22 PM) I find that hard to believe. This guy was either a total loon or this was racially motivated. Why? Road rage is known to result in deaths.

I think all indications so far point to "parking spot argument" as the issue there.
