  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 31, 2015 -> 11:35 AM) Sounds worse than that What are the rumors?
  2. Awesome, Rice and Crosby suspended from the team indefinitely. Probably got drunk/high last night. What a s*** show of a season.
  3. They look beat down and tired. No one looks like they're having fun either.
  4. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 30, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) I understand your concept. However, I guess it doesn't make sense to listen to just one person on anything regardless of their education and their profession. Why would borrow so much money that when you look at your paycheck would be limit anything else you could do? They should look at it in the big picture. The people still had to sign on the dotted line and agree to borrow that money. Anytime you buy anything especially in the thousands and 100's thousands dollars you would think that people would look at it more closely and not just listen to one person trying to sell you something. I guess it's just a different point of view. I can't imagine just signing it know it would take too much of the paycheck. Now if you lose your job or something drastic like that happens, it's a different story. To be fair, the entire house buying business is just utter nonsense. I'm a lawyer and read contracts all the time. I didn't read through the mortgage/closing documents when I bought my house because it would have taken me a week to get through. You sign 50 documents. And it's not like you're going to not agree to certain items and have someone there at the closing negotiate with you about that change. You take it or leave it.
  5. A year of concealed carry in Illinois was terrible, resulting in daily fire fights with unintended victims and murders by gun-toting vigilantes uneventful. http://illinoistimes.com/article-15045-packing-heat.html
  6. The one comparison you can make is whether we should be pushing people and businesses towards things, e.g. owning a home and going to college. Obviously the end result is something we want, but is it really right for everyone? I'd argue, no, it's not. Some people should be renting, and some people should not go to college. Both can be too much of a burden that just makes things more difficult in the end.
  7. Pathetic effort so far.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) He'd clearly rather not go at all and has been fined for taking that road in the past, and taped segments are a bit different from unscripted press conferences. He did a whole stunt with a cut out of himself right? He performed an act in front of people. I find it hard to believe someone with a legit disorder about speaking to the media/being in the public eye is going to do that.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 01:52 PM) This is how I feel about Richard Sherman. I can't stand how he has to get in the opponent's face and talk smack after every single play. But man, if the Bears had a CB like that.... You'd still think he's a prick, you'd just deal with it. I did the same thing with Rodman, AJ and Ozzie. You dislike it but forget it because they're on your team, and then eventually it hits a point where the antics become annoying and not worth it. Usually when they stop winning. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 03:24 PM) I've seen it hinted that Lynch might have some sort of social anxiety disorder, which is why he dislikes talking to the media. Taking the questions seriously would make him very nervous, etc. I recall Marion Barber was very shy as well, though he came off better than Marshawn Eh, I don't buy it. 1) He's done taped segments before (e.g., Kenny Mayne). He wasn't to obligated to do that. 2) his media stunts draw more attention to him. If you really have a disorder you're doing everything in your power to lessen the attention.

  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 07:41 PM) I'm assuming he means the lower interest rates. And few requirements to qualify.
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 03:33 PM) Bear in mind that "being in college" is supposed to be a bar that is cleared that makes the person somewhat likely to pay back. This is part of the reason there has been some push towards stopping public loans to for-profit colleges and other particularly unsuccessful institutions. The government is also making money on these loans, so as it is they've built enough risk into the disbursement of them that they aren't being gamed on a large scale. Still, I don't think it should be a program based primarily on whether the government can break even on the loans. The outcome for society - more education, economic stimulus, etc. - should be the goal and the costs just have to be reasonable given those goals. This is opposed to we must have some arbitrary cost with little regard for the level of benefit derived from it. Yeah for-profit schools are terrible. I don't know why people go there. Community college is clearly a better option. I'm curious about that "making money" claim. Here's an explanation by the Washington Post that argues any profits are based on the CBO's methodology: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkbl...-student-loans/
  13. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 11:37 AM) This is, to me, an important point. My understanding is that most of the terrible student loan stories involve private debt rather than direct loans. To your other point, student loans are the exact same as any unsecured debt - credit cards, medical bills, etc. - you get a judgment and then try to collect. I'm not sure why that makes them a different animal. Well I've pointed out the main reasons - private lenders versus the government, and re-payment options. The government also can't selectively choose who it loans money to. The only requirement, that i'm aware of, is whether the person is going to school. A person could be dirt poor with no prospect of paying it back and the government is still giving them money. Private lenders can appreciate that risk and build it into the loan and/or their business. Same with credit card companies. The government can't.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 11:13 AM) This is yesterday news, but thought it was post worthy. http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=12238852 I think it's all a bunch of nonsense. I think it's the obvious stuff - Thibs wants control of minutes and demands a lot from players, the front office wants him to relax and be more like Pop. That's some basic, fundamental disagreements about how to run a team that is going to cause some division in the organization. Any notion though that the Bulls want Thibs out is, IMO, a media-driven story and nothing more.
  15. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) You income out of the tax deduction on student loan interest pretty quickly. I haven't been able to take it in years - and I definitely consider myself squarely within the middle class. I think it's 75k single, 155k married before it phases out. That's upper class definitions, not middle class. I mean this is gong to have to happen as tuition continues to go up and up at the crazy pace it's going. It's going to cost my son $250k/year to go to school in 2031. I'm fine making it dischargeable, but it will have to be clearly defined what hardship means. Student loans are a different animal because there's nothing to repossess in a loss, like your home or other property. It's held by the government, not a private entity. And the government works with you to pay it off unlike most private lenders with use of deferments, different payment plans, etc. I think it's a different animal. Maybe the private student loans should be dischargeable, but not the government ones. Should be annually since it's based on your reported income.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) I'm being seirous. Jordan had to love that game. His Bulls vs. the Warriors, who are one of the funnest teams to watch play. Tempo of the game, everything about the game was fun...better yet, we got the W at the end! I'll step in for him: "Why would I waste my time watching either team play a regular season game when at the end of the year Bron Bron will get another trophy?"
  17. I feel asleep after the 1st and was convinced the Bulls would get run out of the gym. Glad I don't bet on games.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 12:25 PM) lol. it was pretty funny when "Kiss by a Rose" by Seal played, though. I was talking with my wife the other day about how they ruined Karens character a bit too quick. Agree. I was never a fan of Mandy but was of Karin.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 09:10 AM) But what really ever comes out of "media day" that matters or anyone cares about? It's always just canned non-answers. This is true. The media day thing is a joke. But I still dislike that entire team. Carrell is a cheating asshole. Sherman is a loud mouth braggart. And Lynch pulls too many stunts. Just answer questions for 5 minutes and move on with your day. He's pulling these stunts just to be different and get MORE attention. And the 12th man stuff is obnoxious. Literally every fan base thinks they're the best. Seattle is no different.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 09:47 AM) Unless it's MY good behavior I guess! (and encouraging people to go to school by making it affordable is how you grow the middle class and help put a dent in poverty, which are good things) It's not like there aren't other benefits provided by the government to students: pretty favorable lending, tax deductions of interest on the loans, continuing education credits, etc.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 08:17 AM) I think it's odd that you make this complaint shortly after strongly defending 529 plans that primarily benefit the upper class and labeled any removal of that preferential tax treatment as punishment. It is punishment, and I also said raise taxes on the rich in other areas if you really want to even out the benefit. I like to reward good behavior (saving long term for something). Not just give people things because (going to school).
  22. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) someone's bitter. I'm paying back the loan AND saving for retirement. I'm doing what someone my age SHOULD be doing. I honestly don't understand how I can be faulted for doing that. haha Bitter that in this country I and others like me (middle to upper middle class) have to shoulder the burden of both the rich and poor? Yep, I sure as hell am. Your situation might not be so bad, but there are others out there that definitely game the system. Hell I have friends who are doing it. Friends who have basically decided not to marry so that their income levels to the IRS and Dept. of Ed look substantially lower than they really are.
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 04:40 PM) I also feel like all of you are missing the fact that as I make more money, I'm paying more in student loans... I'm just ALSO putting money into an IRA. The fact that you all are acting like I'm "choosing" not to pay my loans back is hilarious. Like... you guys don't think I'm trying to make more and more money? If that means I have to pay more in loans, so be it, but that's my goal. I'm not TRYING to game the system. Lol. I think it's the classic example of a buddy or family member asking you to lend them some money because they can't afford to do X and then you find out they went out the night before and dropped 100 bucks for dinner and drinks or just bought an expensive toy. When you borrow money from someone you shouldnt be spending any extra dollars on anything else but that loan. Otherwise it just looks like you're taking advantage of the generosity.
  24. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 04:12 PM) Student loans get protections that basically no other private debt get under any relevant law - they basically cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy filing.* As a result, people who are struggling with student loan debt can't get out from under it - as opposed to someone who has a business go belly up. If the tradeoff to that is that there are programs like the income repayment plan or the "work for the government for 10 years and have your loans forgiven," I fail to see the concern. Those debts are already given absurdly preferred status under the law. * I say basically because the Bankruptcy Code has provisions that allow student loans to be discharged with a requisite show of "hardship," but the cases that allow for hardship discharges involve the saddest .0000001% of people struggling with student loan debt. Students don't have any collateral, so it makes sense that it would be difficult to discharge. The problem is going forward the amount of debt is going to keep rising and more and more people are going to take the "well i'll just pay whatever I can for 25 years and then it'll be gone" option, leaving the rest of the country with the increasing bills.
