NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 18, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) Illinois has seemingly sucked at holding leads since blowing that game against PSU in 2006. That is also the last time I felt genuinely great about the program (and even then recruiting was going horribly). I did feel pretty good last fall when Snider was committed but that quickly tapered off. The dude at Illiniboard had a breakdown on Twitter of the late game meltdowns this season. It's depressing.

How do you not have a play drawn up out of that time out? Wtf Groce? And yet another late game meltdown. Indiana goes 11-0 in the final 2 minutes. Just terrible.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 16, 2015 -> 03:44 PM) If you're still clinging to the "they're so cheap, they'll never spend any money!" idea, you have multiple instances over the last several years indicating it just isn't true anymore. It's not about whether they're making good moves or should be praised. I agree that spending on FA's is probably the one on the list that isn't true anymore. But that's a short term trend.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 16, 2015 -> 03:42 PM) You need to find balance. Be encouraged and happy when they make good decisions. Be upset wave your fists when they don't. Being angry/upset all the time won't make any of it enjoyable and then what's the point? Who says I'm not happy? I'm actually a fan of the Fox move. I'm not blown away by it, but I think it's a good, safe hire that's not going to fail miserably. I'm also a big fan of Pace the more I read. Shoot, go back to the beginning of this season. I was the moron saying they were an SB contender and was upset they weren't getting more love. I can be a blind optimist just as much as a pessimist.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 16, 2015 -> 03:31 PM) That wasn't a list of "Good decisions" by the Bears but a list that counters the typical "they're so cheap! they always do the same thing!" message that's been out there forever. So if the GOP does one nice act that you agree with you'll never complain about their history ever again? That's how gripes work? I think the Bears brass has set up decades of disappointment that led to those gripes and complaints, and the fact that they've done the opposite once or twice in their entire history doesn't really change things. When it becomes a trend going the other way, then you can cross it off the list.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Jan 16, 2015 -> 03:26 PM) Why are you even a Bears fan if that's how you view this team? To be honest I'm debating why I am, given that they're continually disappointing, have treated their fans poorly and are a terribly owned/managed franchise. But it is what it is, I grew up loving them so I'm stuck. Honestly though I think I'm more of a fan for criticizing and b****ing about them (emotional weight) versus just blindly clapping my hands in agreement with everything they do/have done.

Penn State horror story
Here's my take: I think this is actually a good decision, even if unfortunate result is that Penn State ultimately benefits from it. The players and coaches won those games. 99% of those people weren't involved in the Sandusky stuff. It makes little sense to claim those games never happened and that Penn State never won them based on that scandal. On top of that, you can divorce Paterno winning on the field with Paterno being an immoral, unethical slim ball protecting his child molesting friend. One has little to do with the other if you think about it. It's not like the program was deriving any benefit from that activity. It's not, from a winning and losing perspective, the same as a head coach knowing that his players are cheating and breaking NCAA rules or flat out cheating himself. It'd be one thing if Sandusky was the DC or OC with clear ties to the play of the team, but he wasn't. So, I don't have a problem with it. What everyone wants, Paterno's legacy being tainted, is already going to happen/has already happened. Outside of Happy Valley he's always going to have the Sandusky stuff linked to him. If they want to create a little bubble and pretend like it never happened, fine. It's not like other universities haven't done the same thing. Hell, our entire country does that with certain atrocities we committed in the past.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2015 -> 02:05 PM) I am stealing this from lostfan's facebook post, but it seems apt here. List of things people always say the Bears as an organization won't ever do that they actually did, and why people need to quit saying these things: -Complete a blockbuster trade when the window presents itself (Cutler, '09, also Marshall, '12) -Pay big money to a marquee free agent (Peppers '10, and as a bonus, now many of those people are criticizing it being a bad contract) -Fire the GM/coach when they have money left on their contract (Angelo, and then Lovie) -Fire someone so soon after the previous firing even if the need was clear (Trestman, Emery) -Hire a GM who has no previous ties to the organization -Hire a HC with no prior coaching experience 1) Marshall wasn't a blockbuster. They gave up a 3rd round pick for him. 2) I don't know anyone who thought that deal was all that unreasonable. The backend he was being paid more than what he produced, but I think most understand he was probably underpaid for the production have gave in the first few seasons. 3) I suppose, though the complaints are more about waiting too long to fire people. On top of hiring mostly terrible people to begin with. 4) See 3. 5) They're now 1 for 13 in that department. 6) They're now 1 for 12

Ferguson Riots
Ugh: "Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations, said, “There is some grave concern about the possible loss of significant funding while local police and state police are being asked to do more and more each year.” It's literally stealing money from people you asshole. I don't give a s*** that the PD can't have a Margaritaville for its break room anymore.

How does the AG of the DOJ stop state and local cops from applying existing federal law? He can't invalidate the law. And he has no jurisdiction over state and local cops.

Shameless episode 1 was a little disappointing. Not much happened, but I guess it's setting the stage. I think i'd like Steve back in the picture, though at least his GF or wife or whoever is hanging around so i'm sure he'll be back at some point. Nice to see Lip growing up a little and realizing his potential. Also, who knew every guy in Chicago is gay and willing to go to town with a simple stare?

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 15, 2015 -> 12:45 PM) Since the defender can sag off of Tate, he can not only stop Tate from penetrating, he can also easily help cut off drives from the wings. This is a big problem for a player like Hill whose game is so reliant on driving to the hoop. I thought Tate drove the ball pretty well last night. And I also think if you look at the numbers, when Tate was playing it happened to be when guys were hitting their shots. That's mostly because Tate was driving and dishing to Cosby and Nunn when they were wide open, instead of Starks dribbling the ball for 15 seconds on the perimeter and then passing to someone being guarded closely, resulting in a contested shot. It's having a legit PG who sets up teammates versus a rec league guard who dribbles the ball up the court. I'm making Tate out to be some All-Big Ten player when he's clearly not, but I just think the entire offense runs better with him in the game. Illinois went on a big run to get up 11 or so and Starks comes in and Illinois immediately goes cold. I don't think it's a coincidence.
