French Newspaper Attack
But the modern and civilized world all agrees that's a bunch of nonsense and that even if it is provocative, freedom of speech and freedom of press is more important. So why do we (westerners) give a s*** about what Muslims like or don't like? It's asinine. Not to be all left and right about this, but it's the left being a bunch of wimps, not wanting to offend anyone. f*** that. I hope every western paper across the world responds to this with a picture of Mohammad on the front page. Give a message that we don't give a s*** anymore. No more consideration for scumbags' sensibilities. Be a f***ing grown up and don't look at a paper if something offends you. That's what 99.9% of the world does, so why do we act like these assholes deserve anything different? It's been over 13 years since 9/11. It's been decades since extremists started their most recent jihad. And nothing has changed. The world has gotten worse. Every 2 years we can expect something like this to happen. So why are we still pretending that if we place nice it'll stop? It won't.

Finished up Marco Polo on Netflix last night. Some good eye-candy (ladies and setting), some good villain stuff, but kind of meh on character development. Being 10 hours it wasn't a huge time commitment so I would recommend it.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 02:09 PM) He really isn't that different though. D'antoni did him no favors, but the fact he's shooting about the same percentage as last year tells you he's not much better. His minutes-load, his rebounding, and his blocked shots are definitely better this year, which are big contributions to the team. However, his per 36 shooting numbers are extremely similar (4.9 FTA/36 for both years, 1.7 FGA less than last, but even 14.8 FGA per game when looking at his overall numbers) and he's converting at a similar rate outside of FTs (48% from the field both years, FT% is up almost 10%, which explains his slightly better TS%). I feel like this is one of those examples of "the stats don't tell the whole truth." Someone watching Gasol play last year versus this year would not think they were having the same type of season. The fact that everyone is mildly surprised that Gasol is playing so well is a good indication of that.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 11:02 AM) Jimmy's been extremely consistent this year, whereas there's been games where Gasol couldn't hit the side of a barn with his jumper. Gasol's good games are really good, but he's also disappeared a handful of times this year when the team needed him. He's also not the best defender. His length is nice to have, but he's very slow. People who are saying this is old Gasol...stop that. Old Gasol was an elite post player who shot 55% from the field. The Gasol we're getting this year isn't that much different than the Gasol on the Lakers the past 3 years, with the exception that he has a way better team, coach, and system around him. I like the signing, but let's not sugar-coat it too much. He's had his fair share of duds too (Portland, Atlanta and the Nets last week). Again, I don't disagree, but Pau's offense from the post provides quite a bit of space on the floor for Butler and Noah (edit: and Rose) to do their thing. I think that's forgotten.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) I disagree with you on this. I will admit that Gasol is a more consistent and reliable force on offense (at least perception-wise), and even though he's gotten better defensively as of late, he was horrendous early on in the season. Butler impacts the game on both ends of the floor, plays 40 minutes night in and night out, came up big in late games a few times already this season. While on some nights, Gasol isn't even on the floor for most of the 4th quarter. It's close enough of a call I can't disagree with you. But I do think Gasol seems under appreciated. He's easily the best center in the East. Even with Butler playing as he is, the Bulls are about 5-6 games worse if Gasol isn't playing as well as he has. His blocks and rebounding have been key to a lot of the runs the Bulls go on. And he's been closing games more and more against good teams. He and Noah are becoming a terror on both the offensive AND defensive end because of their ability to rebound and block shots.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 10:43 AM) Gonna shout out to Gasol, who was probably the reason we won last night. His jumpers kept us in it in the first half, and shut down Dwight where Noah could not. He's being ignored a little. At this point he's my MVP for the Bulls, as much as Butler deserves the mention as well. 1 off the league lead in double doubles, putting up career stats in boards and blocks. He's "won" us more games than Jimmy at this point. But both have been amazing.

2015 Books Thread
QUOTE (farmteam @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 08:26 AM) I'm reading third book in Ken Follett's Century Trilogy, Edge of Eternity. Pretty good. I got half way through it about 6 months ago and got burnt out (having read the first two in the trilogy like 4 months before that). His books are great if you haven't read one in a while, but it's the same themes (if not straight plot points) over and over again. And so many characters to keep track of.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 03:23 PM) He could sell the school in the same way Jerrance could. You gotta hope he still has some connections in the Chicago area. The problem is that he was a national player 10 years ago. Kids being recruited now would have been 5-8 years old. They probably don't remember Dee.

And you wonder why some police are trigger happy.
I'm way late to this but.... Since we have an example of a black person killing a cop here, can we start a movement with the message that ALL blacks are cop killers? I mean, if I learned anything in 2014, it's that stereotyping entire people/groups is the right thing to do. All cops hate black people because of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, so all blacks hate cops because of this guy, right? Is that how it works?

2015 Videogame thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 01:18 PM) The gameplay is more realistic. I'm not playing a videogame to find out that one of my favorite players broke his ankle in a game I play to have fun. There should be a way to shut off severe injuries. I love tinkering with the rotations for a two week stretch or whatever, but when Joakim Noah breaks his leg in a videogame and I am stuck playing another 60 games of that season just because? A-no thank you. Lol, no I get you. I do the same thing.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 07:54 AM) Franchise. I don't care about fake player stuff. Gimme the Bulls, because they're amazing in real life and in that game. Butler's at like 25.5 ppg for me and I no longer focus on padding Rose's stats, which makes for a more realistic and fun game. Oh, and I shut injuries off.
