2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) I completely agree; If he wants to do Chicago he needs to basically put all the pressure on Phil and make it believable that he'll take the Bulls offer. That is why I think Bulls should leak some reports that they have deals in place for Taj and now can offer Melo the full max without a S&T. Note: None of the above is necessarily true, although you know tarn well they could move Taj if they needed to and make things work. This would then apply the pressure for Phil to at least consider S&T cause either way, Melo is out. I don't think Phil believes Melo walks from 50M, however, if Bulls offer 94, I think Melo might just walk (and leave that 5th year on the table). Bulls offer would technically be more money. That's why I asked earlier why the Bulls haven't, in writing, promised to Melo that they'll offer him that 5th year at X price regardless of the deal he signs before this season. Then you're talking about 15 million over 5 years he's losing, not 30 or 60. But i'm not sure this is allowed.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) He is either waiting for LBJ as it could impact where he ultimately goes or he's seeing if there could be a S&T angle worked to make the money not so much of a difference. That could be why this continues to drag out. But until he tells Phil "I want to go to Chicago," a S&T is not a possibility. Phil is not going to offer that up to him, because then he loses his negotiation position. He needs to posture like he doesn't want to play ball with Chicago, even if he's ok with Melo leaving.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) wait what 60M is nothing to think about? I'm saying you take the 60 million every time. No sane person would not take that guaranteed money.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) Technically if NY won't S&T and Melo is debating between NY / Chicago, there are a lot of things to think about. I realize we all think oh these are big dollars whats it matter, but if you took the % on pay and reflected it on you or I's pay, it would matter and while they make a lot more, it still matters to them and rightfully so. It's 60 million. There's nothing to think about. 99.99% of people would go back, and he should. If he ends up back in New York and Lebron goes to Cleveland, this was all for show. There's no good reason for the decision to take this long.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) I have a feeling Melo's delay has to do with somebody making moves I can somewhat understand Melo. IMO he's waiting on Lebron. If Lebron does the Miami short term deal, he goes to NY because the possibility of playing with Lebron in one or two years is still an option. If Lebron goes to Cleveland that becomes a pipe dream, so maybe Melo goes elsewhere.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Tens of millions of dollars and the future of your career? Both guys are getting the max (or will demand the max). The money is no secret. And yes, it's a decision, but Christ it's not a life changing one. And it's not like they haven't had time the last couple of months to think about it, Melo especially.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:06 PM) Not sure. I think they want it to be over but you cant just make a move without doing lots of other people favors with these meetings. LBJ is still scrimmaging in Vegas. I was thinking Lebron and his team are probably trying to find the biggest buyer for ad space on his website when he announces.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) Whoa whoa whoa whoa, so we decided to bring Taj in to sell Melo rather than trading him for max space, and then our response to Melo saying no is to sign a player to...push Taj to the bench? Nobody can convince me this isn't exhibit A of terrible front office management. I think Taj is 100% OK with being the 6th man. He dominates 2nd units and is almost always playing in the 4th anyway.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) SAS on his NY station saying that sources tell him "Chicago is a monkey-wrench" in the equation right now. I wonder if we are getting more aggressive or if Melo continues to push a preference one way / trying to see if somehow S&T can happen. Problem is, if Melo feels this way, he'd have leaked strong leans to Chicago, LA, leaving Knicks to really put pressure. Fact that he hasn't done that, makes you wonder (if you wanted the pessimist view). Optimist view says that might be the case he's just being extremely tight lipped right now. "Don't touch that dial folks, the story changes by the second!"

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) We, at this point, traded Deng for no reason (I assumed it would be to allow us to go into luxury this offseason). I don't particularly care about Jimmy anymore, I think his season last year was a major setback and would trade him for an asset like *snap*, but I'd gladly go into luxury tax if this team showed something next year. That was done to gain some cap space/escape the repeater tax penalty I believe. We got Bynum's expiring deal in return.

You know what would suck? If after all this, Melo signs with the Bulls, and then Rose gets hurt again. Talk about a punch to the nuts.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Give this a read. There can be no difference between 30 minutes and 9 hours once something has been forgotten. Note, I'm not posting this to defend this guy, because to me he (and his wife) did this on purpose. I'm posting this to your comment saying someone should go to jail regardless. There are some legit cases where people forgot, and it's the worst mistake they'll ever make in their life. Doesn't make them murderers. Doesn't mean they should go to jail for it. They simply forgot - or assumed something had already been done. http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/ma...2a52_story.html I cannot imagine a scenario where I would simply forget that my son was in the car. But even then, in this case, remember the guy went back to his car and should have seen his son. Now add how he acted when the police arrived. Add in the weirdly on-point google searches. Add in the life insurance as a potential motive. To me, if what I've read is true, that's enough.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Haha...see my next post (which I was writing when you made this post). I wonder if that is exactly what they are doing with Pau (kind of an alternative). Or at least start putting some reports out there that you have came up with options to get the Knicks worried. I thought Anthony wanted Taj around though? Also, is there a provision in the CBA that would stop the Bulls from making a deal with Carmelo promising to sign him to a "max" deal this year, and then immediately extend him next year so that he could still get his 5 year, 129 million, just in two deals, not one?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) How could SAS say that? His co-worker, Marc Stein said the Bulls are out and have always been out. Stein is a Texas first, west coast second guy. He has no midwest/east sources.

In fairness to SAS, and I despise SAS, he did call the 3some to the Heat in 2010. He's got some good sources. I still think Melo is waiting for Lebron's decision. If Lebron goes to Cleveland, he's not going to New York. Maybe that's enough to get Melo to at least tell the Knicks he wants to go to the Bulls and to work out a S&T.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) A police officer's gut feeling can be a useful tool in policing where quick decisions are necessary but a gut feeling shouldn't be admissible in court and it's not something you should honestly be considering even when forming a personal opinion about the case. The cops opinion about whether the guy is acting normal would probably not be allowed. But his observations of the dad's reaction definitely will be and they should be considered as part of the entire evidentiary record.
