QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:01 PM) Except its not. In Dungy's lifetime, blacks weren't playing pro sports, because they would be a distraction. Yes it is. If an owner came out and said they didn't want to deal with Tebow's media circus, on top of not thinking he's a good player, would your immediate conclusion be that the owner is anti-Christian?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 08:57 PM) I understand completely. No one could ever accuse the rest of the owners in a league banning black people of being racist. They just didn't want them around. Cute! It's still bulls*** logic though.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 08:56 PM) OK, I can't take you seriously if you are going to equate the torture and murder of animals to being gay. Please, I'm not equating the two. Simply pointing out that people protested over that, why wouldn't they protest over this? I mean, I guess I forgot that discrimination/homophobia no longer exists.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 08:51 PM) It's a good thing there were no protests or angry people when baseball had its first African American player. So call the owners that took that on courageous. Don't call the others racist because they didn't. That's bulls*** logic.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) why is he an asshole, because you dont like what he stands for? I dont remember Tebow whoring himself of a reality tv show. I dont remember Tebow saying at his combine that he wanted to only be known as a football player and then started up a website to take advantage of his sudden fame. I dont remember Tebow saying no cameras in his house for draft day and then all of a sudden having cameras in there for a staged reaction shot. If anyone chose to be something it was Sam and he chose to be a distraction since he left the combine. He had a commercial that one time about abortion. And he bent his knee and pointed to the sky after scoring a touchdown. Stop jamming your religion down my throat Tebow! Look, we all know what it was - the media. The sensation that was created. And if Sam ends up being halfway decent, the same s*** will happen. And just like Tebow, it's 100% reasonable to not want to deal with that even if you think it's a great thing for the world.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 08:45 PM) Not sure what else you call it but bigotry. If he can't cut it on the field, then cut him. Don't use "distractions" as an excuse to keep gay players out of the nfl. Again, this is such bulls***. You know as soon as he gets cut or doesn't play there will be people (you probably) claiming it's because he's gay and the owner and GM and coach are all just bigoted assholes. You can't help yourself when it comes to name calling like that. They did it with Tebow (oh it's because he's Christian!) and they'll do it because of Sam being gay. S***, that second guessing and being called names is a main reason I wouldn't have drafted the guy. On top of me not being sold that he's an NFL caliber player, f*** that headache.

I love that you live in fantasyland, but come back to reality. These people are about running a business and making money. And they do it in the most secretive way possible. Drafting Sam is inviting a lot of attention. I get that you think that's great attention, but it might not be for every franchise. And lol at you thinking there wouldn't be protests. There were f'n protests for Michael Vick. Sam plays in St. Louis, not exactly the most liberal city in America. There SHOULDN'T be a problem, and I hope there's not. But doesn't mean there won't be additional issues that are raised IF he ends up playing a lot. And I'm not saying security risks like they have to hire 40 more guards for the inevitable riot. But they will have to be prepared for something. Remember Christians are all wacko's hell-bent on violence right? Again, my position is you can be pro-Sam and still understand the baggage that comes with it. Baggage comes with a lot of players but they're generally worth the hassle. Sam may not be. You as an owner deciding that on those basis does not make you a dumb bigot, a terrible person or a coward.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 07:38 PM) If one of your criteria boils down to "is he or she gay," you are a dumb bigot. Pretty straight forward. Well, no one has said that, which is why I think your position here is way too aggressive. Protests cost money. There could be an escalating incident. Who knows. It may not happen, and hopefully it doesn't, but that's legit possibility. Just because you don't want to deal with that doesn't mean you're a "dumb bigot." Lol, a coward now. What bulls***, and another reason why your position amounts to "if you don't care ENOUGH, you're a terrible person."

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 07:07 PM) Refusing to hire someone because they are gay is bigoted and s***ty. Period, end of story. That's all this boils down to. That's entirely what dungys basis and everyone who whines about "distraction" is. Whether he can hack it in the nfl is a separate discussion. I just gave you three legitimate issues that drafting Sam might cause. You could be a supporter of the LGBT community and STILL have reservations about taking Sam. But that doesn't matter, terrible person and bigot!

The Republican Thread
You guys are calling people terrible and bigots for not supporting something ENOUGH. You're saying an owner could have legitimate concerns with the controversy and/or POTENTIAL controversy Sam is going to bring (protests at games and the security that may come with it, a player saying something to a reporter that's offensive and makes the team/brand look bad, being questioned and no doubt accused of being personally homophobic if he doesn't make the roster or play, etc. etc.) That's a bunch of bulls***. I can get your beef if it's about Tony Dungey and his lame response here that doesn't jive with his past. But there's a legit argument that it's simply not worth getting involved in Sam that has nothing to do with personal opinions about his sexuality. He's not good at football AND not worth the extra stuff he's going to bring with him. I know Tebow is the poster child for this argument, but there's some truth to it. Teams didn't want him because not only was he not good at football, but he also brought a lot of baggage with him. His religion rubbed people the wrong way. I'm sure you were all 100% in support of him then, calling all of those owners and scouts and coaches terrible people, right?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) He's a much, much better facilitator. Someone you'd like to see with a lineup of shooters. I still think this is a bit overblown. Who the hell could Kirk pass to the last 2 years? When Thibs runs out Noah (no jumpshot), Taj (no perimeter game), Butler (can't shoot consistently) , it's pretty tough to pass the ball around efficiently.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) I have no idea what that's in reference to, but yes, you are. It's only a potential "distraction" because of dumb bigots and that stance only adds to ithat climate of acceptable bigotry. Come on, that's bulls***. It's a distraction because of the media covering the story, both for good and bad. You can't deny there won't be coverage, just like you can't deny Manziel or Tebow will/did get crazy amounts of coverage. At the end of the day I think it's a valid concern when you're talking about a guy who was drafted so late and is very questionable to make any sort of impact at this level. The question becomes is it worth it? Is it worth the headache? Vick served his time and guess what, was still a very good professional player. There was value there. It made sense to deal with the distractions given what you were going to get. Sam is just a story. Most coaches/scouts don't think he'll make it. And of course if he doesn't, the conclusion will be "oh well it's because he's gay and you're a bigot! That's why he didn't make the team/doesn't start!" I'm sure Dungy is full of s*** and he's really just saying I don't want a gay guy on my team. But I don't agree that distraction can't be a legitimate excuse.

So, if you don't want to draft a homosexual onto your team (or are of the opinion that you wouldn't, if you could) because of the inevitable distraction it will cause, you're a terrible person?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) So can other players for the vet min. A guard that can't shoot or pass...it does sound appealing. Who are these players you speak of? You may be right, there might be someone i'm not thinking of, but for now, to get over the hurdle of "veteran of the system/franchise + good defender+capable ball-handler," I need some names.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 06:57 AM) There is a specific exclusion in my policy, (which is standard btw in almost all auto policies), which excludes coverage when at an auto shops. This has already passed through my insurance carrier. And btw, I really didn't want my insurance company paying for it either. Ironically enough though I have a personal liability rider in a renter's policy that may cover me. I say ironically because they are all with the same carrier, just different divisions. I find this incredibly difficult to believe. Maybe for damage done as a result of the repairs made to the car, but not damage done by your car to another car. The dude driving it was a permissive user of the vehicle. It's the same as if you gave the keys to a friend or family member and they got in an accident with your car. The insurance company can't just deny coverage based on that.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) No, I'm not acting like that at all. I'm questioning the allocation of resources to a s*** backup PG for the BAE when more interesting moves were available, or players with different skill sets (offense) were available. Other bulls fans, who liked the offseason, need to convince themselves that because they like Doug and Nikola, that Kirk must also have been a good addition because they like to feel good and not think of anything bad. But Kirk sucks, we know he sucks because we've watched him suck, and this season when he dribbles in circles for 20 minutes and can't get the ball to our incredible second line of shooters, we will hear about how Kirk sucks on this very board that is so happy we used our last bit of attractive flexibility on Kirk Hinrich. In comparison to Lebron James, yes, he sucks. In comparison to other back-up point guards making 2 million a year, he's actually pretty good. His shooting is about the only thing that sucks in his game. He can do everything else just fine for 10-15 minutes a game against a 2nd unit.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) okay. But the team scored 68 points in a playoff game, when this team needs offense, are you going to throw Kirk at the 2? That's exciting to everyone? I'd rather have tried the BAE on Shawn Marion than kirk if we wanted defensive re-enforcement. I'd have no problem had Kirk decided to pay the org a true discount and signed for vet min I'd be all for it. But to sign him at 2 million per because he is better at defense than 2 offensive guards, meh. If they need to score points they're going to put in Gasol or McDermott and play "big." Or even Brooks. Kirk will be the PG of the 2nd unit, expected to play about 10-15 minutes a game against other teams' 2nd units. I think that's something he can handle just fine.

I'm in the same boat. Some aspects of the show I like (the aftermath of people vanishing) but some I don't (the people in white, especially the smoking and not talking crap). The "this season on" previews makes it seem like a lot of stuff is going to happen this season.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 12:57 PM) Did anyone watch the first episode of "Married" on FX last Thursday? Thought it was pretty funny. I thought it was kinda meh. The premise, at least for the pilot, was a bit silly. I dunno what woman, especially a mother of 2 or 3, that would be totally fine with her husband going out to get laid. Even if she wouldn't object on the moral basis of breaking his vows, there's no way she'd be fine with him not helping around the house with the kids during the middle of the day. Other TV thoughts: Caught up on last week's Leftovers, the one that was centered on the priest. Holy crap, that was a great hour of television. Masters of Sex (premiere): missed this show. Still great. I would do naughty things with Lizzy Caplan. True Blood. Jesus, just go away already. My wife and I keep watching just to see how people die/how it ends. This season has gone to a whole new level of suck.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:33 PM) About a year ago I went to an oil change place and gave them my keys and waited. Their attendant backed my truck into another vehicle. The oil change place refused to pay My insurance refused to pay I just received a notice of being sued for the amount. Seems that by giving them the keys I authorized the idiot to drive my vehicle making me responsible. Yeah, media war begins next week. Fortunately two of my very best friends deal with the local media on an everyday basis and are hooking me up with the local "on your side" reporters. Your insurance company should be defending you. If not, get a lawyer. They are breaching the policy.
