Vacation/Travel Thread.
I'd head up to Fort Collins myself and do the brewery tours there - New Belgium being my favorite (Fat Tire). http://www.visitftcollins.com/brewery-tours Edit: Just make sure to bring your ID's. They are assholes up there. We had a group fly out to meet a friend who lives in Denver. One of the guys' Illinois drivers license had expired the day before we did the tour and they wouldn't serve him. We're all 30-31. I yelled like crazy at the hippy behind the counter, but no luck. That was at the Odell brewery, so skip that one.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Because there was a reasonable chance that the government wouldn't act strongly enough and the world would effectively implode? And money would have become worthless anyway, so it was a good gamble. I'm incredibly pissed I didn't jump in that early.

Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 20, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) That's not really what the research was looking at. It wasn't about individuals getting raises, it was about the total share of income growth that was captured by a given segment of the income distribution. If the total income in the US increased by $1000 Billion dollars 2009-2011, then the total income of the top 1% increased by $1210 Billion during the same time period. In other words, the top 1% captured every dollar of growth during that period and then some, meaning that the other 99% saw a net drop in income. That's both in real dollars and in relative percentage of the total income shares. You're right when you point to the fact that the growth has been in investment income, though. Wages have been stagnant or declining for a while now and were really hammered in 2007-2008. Yet, despite record profits (investment growth), we're not seeing wages come up. It wasn't always the case that the only way to increase income was by already being well-off and investing money, but that's been the trend for a while now and it's really kicked up lately, as evidence by the fact that 1% is capturing more than 100%. Bloomberg had a recent article about Walmart on why, long-term, this type of "growth" and having almost all of the wealth be captured by such a tiny slice of the population isn't good for anybody. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-15/w...in-e-mails.html I don't see how this can be true. My wife and I's retirement accounts and investment accounts all made money in that period and we're not anywhere close to the 1%. I suspect just about anyone with investments would have made money in those years as well. Am I missing something?

Shoulda been a flagrant on Nix there. That was obvious. But thanks ESPN for showing the replay of the original Zeller nut shot.

So apparently Illinois has made some some serious inroads on 2014 5* PF, 11th overall ranked, Leron Black, a prior decommit of Baylor. He'd be a pretty nice get for Groce in his first year.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 18, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) PSU and Neb should be locks, I'd put Iowa at about 50/50, OSU maybe 25/75 and Michigan at 10/90. I'll take .500 if we can get there, but at this point 8-10 will get us into the tournament. Yeah I agree, beat PSU and NEB and it's a lock. I'm still a bit shocked that the media selection committee put Illinois as a 5 seed, 18th overall. That was 2 wins ago too.

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
After the last 2 weeks, i'm beginning to think Illinois has a shot at getting to 10 wins. PSU, NEB, Iowa and OSU and a loss to Michigan on the road. Even with a loss at OSU or Iowa, 9-9 would be pretty great from where they started.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 17, 2013 -> 10:29 PM) All the performers sound like s*** too. Somebody get some better audio equipment for crying out loud. Oh and Kobe totally shut LeBron down in the last 5 minutes of the game. That was awesome. Lebron's reaction was pretty typical - laughing it off. Probably saying something like "come on man, this isn't a real game."

Dear NBA, The f***? What is this terrible pre-game entertainment? Oh, and why do we even NEED pre-game entertainment? Ugh, just terrible. You have the best all star game and can't help but make it terrible.

I hope they can. NW gave OSU a good game though. Speaking of OSU, this Wisconsin game looks familiar. If they hit about 6 of those open threes they missed in the first 6 minutes it would be exactly like the Illinois game.

NBA/NFL age limits
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) If you were dirt-poor and couldn't receive any compensation during that 4 years of college play, you wouldn't be living the high life. You'd be dirt-poor, but with a roof over your head and regular meals. Unless you're relying on corruption to undermine the NCAA rules, which means we're right back to asking why those payments shouldn't just be above-board in the first place. Your rep, fame and fortunes as a professional athlete are going to be much, much greater than as a college athlete. I don't think Lebron missed out on much by skipping college. Go read up on what Kentucky basketball players get (and other similar D1 programs). They live a very nice lifestyle in college. Better with tens of millions in the bank? Sure. But not anything like their dirt-poor upbringing. And yes, NBA life is great too, but you immediately get thrust into an adult world. You think Marcus Teague is having the time of his life at 19 hanging out with a bunch of older guys on the road all the time? Or would he have more fun hanging out with coeds? Keep in mind that if you're THAT good, your chances of not making bank are incredibly small. These injuries are really rare.

NBA/NFL age limits
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) I never really got the logic of the amnesty clause. "Well, we signed a lot of stupid contracts and they're clogging up our cap. I know! Let's create this rule where we can pay off 100% of the player's contract, let some other team pay them to play for them on top of that, then sign NEW guys to contracts equally as stupid!" Well yeah, that last part is the problem. But you can't really make a rule like - you can amnesty a contract but then can't sign a max deal for 2 seasons.

NBA/NFL age limits
I love that people are forgetting the INSANE f***ing perks these lottery picks get. If I were one of them, and I was amply covered by insurance (i.e., going from dirt poor to being insured by a few million even if I could never play another game in my life) I would stay for 4 years. f*** the money. You are a king of an entire student body of 35,000 people. You are a friggin' star. And if you win big, you're a hero for life to an entire fanbase. You go to the NBA and yeah, you get paid. But you also work your ass off. You're traveling/playing games constantly for 3/4 of the year. Who's having more fun in life - Cody Zeller or Kyrie Irving? I'm guessing Zeller. (Edit: and yes, I realize that this is a much more difficult choice to make when confronted with the REAL option of making tens of millions. But I'd like to think having a ball in college would be worth the 1-2 year wait)

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) NBA GM's don't negotiate with the NBAPA. Yeah but a lot of the provisions that were negotiated (amnesty clause, for example) was the NBA throwing up it's hands saying "our GM's are f***ing stupid, they keep throwing money and long term deals to s*** players and killing their franchises, so let's do something about it." That was my point.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Are NBA GM's so bad that they need a hard rule to prevent them from being bad at their jobs and prevent the occasional pro-ready HS grad from playing, though? Given the last labor negotiations....yes.
