  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:10 PM) CRAZY PERSON DID SOMETHING CRAZY THAT WAS ENABLED BY READILY AVAILABLE GUNS HOW f***ING WEIRD AND UNPREDICTABLE Given the amount of registered gun owners, actually yes, it is still pretty weird and unpredictable.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:11 PM) On one hand you have a car which is designed for transportation On the other you have a gun which is ENTIRELY designed for killing. Both are the same? Gotcha. If guns were used ENTIRELY for killing human beings, i'd agree with you. But they're not.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) The difference is some people don't think it's a f***ing joke and you do. It's not a joke to point out that the immediate "Zomg! we have to ban guns or we'll all die!" response was and is equally ridiculous as the last gun-related tragedy that occurred because a CRAZY PERSON IS f***ING CRAZY AND DID SOMETHING ONLY A CRAZY PERSON WOULD DO.
  4. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) why? you guys are here pulling out all the bulls*** as usual. see how s***ty it looks now? wanna cut it out? But you're wrong and they're right! Can't you see the difference?
  5. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) For a second, let's try to take all emotion out of this, not discuss the 2nd Amendment, and reach a couple points that I think everyone can agree on: 1) A gun is a tool. 2) A gun is a particuarly dangerous tool. If I mishandle a hammer, maybe I smash my fingers, maybe I accidentally hit someone behind me in the head. If I mishandle a gun and it accidentally discharges, I can kill someone. 3) There is no other tool readily available on the open market that, if used for its intended purpose, is used to kill or injure. 4) Putting the three above assumptions together shows that guns are way more likely to be used in a case like this than any other tool. They don't require close proximity to victims. In situations like the tragedy today, they don't even require accuracy to cause chaos and untold tragedy. 5) There's no way we are getting rid of guns altogether from this society any time soon. The government doesn't have the resources or the willpower to restrict gun ownership entirely. I don't have a problem with responsible gun ownership. I don't have a problem with people that own guns to hunt, shoot at the range, or protect themselves. I do have a problem with people ignoring the fact that guns are extremely dangerous in the wrong hands and that, when purchased, we have no way of knowing if the person buying is going to be responsible or not. The intended purpose of a gun doesn't change the fact that I can put about any object in this sentence and it would still be true. A car is an inherently dangerous object. A knife is an inherently dangerous object. Alcohol is an inherently dangerous object. All must be used with caution, by the right people, or people can die. We have no way of knowing if the person using said object will be responsible or not (and in two of those situations we know that MORE people die than at the hands of guns annually).
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) Once again not true. You can legally transport your gun, you just cant have it loaded on the street. If we are going to make comparisons and have a legitimate discussion, at least start with a factual framework that is correct. You can own a gun in Chicago. Saying its "illegal" is at best mistaken, at worst is a flat out lie to try and perpetrate a myth. Oh for f***'s sake, you know the point i'm making. People involved in the incredibly high rate of gun homicides in this city are not doing anything legal, despite the relatively high level of restrictions to guns that the county and city have. It's a farce to believe that more restrictions is going to do anything. We live in a different culture than other countries in the world for better or for worse. Comparing us to Japan as simply as "they ban them, they don't have as many crimes" is overly simplistic. Even that Atlantic article admits that. Do we want to live in a police state? Do we want to go through full body pat downs and strip searches for every building we enter? That's the only way of being 100% safe from GUN violence, but not violence of any kind. Sorry, I prefer not to live like that. I prefer to believe that it's not guns that kill people, it's people that kill people.
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) This statement is patently false. You can legally own a gun in Chicago. You just can't take it anywhere but your home (for now).
  8. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:33 PM) A Land Without Guns: How Japan Has Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths They still have guns, from your own link - they can own shotguns and air rifles. As far as this: I'm fine with all of that. Some states already have some of those measures, but i'd be fine making them more difficult to buy. You're making me jump through more hoops, and you're not going to stop an incident like this, but fine, if that makes you feel better about it. Also, this:
  9. Indirectly you justify this asshole's actions by blaming the weapon used, not the person using it. Like it's societies fault for allowing people to have weapons. THAT's what caused this problem, not the crazy psycho that pulled the trigger. That's a f***ed up view of crime.
  10. Yeah hows that ban on guns working in the City of Chicago? No one dies from being shot right?
  11. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:30 PM) Man Injures 22 Children in China with a Knife, Kills None so much for your theory jenks Great, you've proven crazy people do crazy things.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 12:59 PM) Luckily for them many of those places had a decent amount of description to them, but they are all pretty unique cities and need to be treated as such. In my head all of those places became jumbled into Cairo, Egypt. Especially with DWD.
  13. Anything can be used as a weapon to kill if the person wants it to. Blaming guns is idiotic IMO. Let's ban automobiles, they cause fatal DUI accidents! Put all the restrictions and bans and laws out there that you want. At the end of the day all you're doing is hurting the law abiding people out there.
  14. not active anymore. Also apparently there's reports of a dead body in the guys apartment.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) Once pandora's box is open, there is no going back. Outside of metal detectors in every school, public building, etc, there is no real way to stop this type of crime. You can potentially limit the death count, but you cant stop it. Even then it wouldn't be enough. "How hey old man security guard manning the metal detector. POP!" Well, there goes stopping the person at the front door.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 09:40 AM) We don't need a trillion dollars worth of boondoggle fighter planes to completely demolish Iran's military capabilities fairly quickly. And if you're worried about the insurgency afterwards, assuming we decide to occupy another country for a decade+, how much is the F-22 really helping out there? It's a trillion dollars of research and development into future tech, it's not like we're spending money on old beater cars or something. I agree we don't need that, but who the hell knows what we'll need in 5 years or 10 years. I'd rather be safe not sorry. There's absolutely things we need to cut and stop wasting money on. All i'm saying is "we don't need it today so it's a waste of money" isn't a good argument.
  17. I agree with a lot of that - defense spending is out of whack. But generally speaking, simply because it's not conceivable that we would use or need those planes right now doesn't mean it's not important to continue researching and finding new and better equipment. If we go to war with Iran and we didn't have the best and most advanced equipment, people would be b****ing about not giving our armed forces the best chance to succeed at their mission and also survive.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 12, 2012 -> 01:33 AM) James Bond movies are supposed to be fanciful and outlandish. They've gotten rid of that. The Bourne movies have done what the most recent Bond movies have done - they've just done it better. That's actually what I liked about Skyfall and why it's one of my favorite Bond movies ever. You still have crazy good action sequences, but there was some actual meat on the movie bones. There was some emotion at play instead of just shooting guns, driving cool cars and banging hot chicks (though there still is all of that in Skyfall)
  19. I'm not a big Tarentino fan either. I still maintain Pulp Fiction is overrated and is sort of a bore to sit through. Reservoir Dogs was amazing, but I dunno, the rest have been meh. Kill Bill was ruined with his obsession for the gross out, and Bastards was fine but again nothing spectacular. I'll be renting Django for sure, but I feel like the hype is a lot like Bastards so I don't think i'll see it in theaters. Much like Woody Allen, I think people become a fan of the style and then so long as the movie isn't total crap it becomes highly reviewed. But highly reviewed often times means you have to be in the right mood and/or like the style to begin with to really enjoy the film. Tarentino always goes for the "B" movie style that I've never liked. In other news, I just read a good review of Zero Dark Thirty. Can't wait to check that out.
  20. I'm a Republican generally but differ a lot from the current party, which has gotten to be a little too extreme socially for my tastes. That said, I have zero interest in starting the circle jerk that would inevitably ensue from participating in this thread.
  21. Yep. Here's the game where they can't hit a shot while making stupid decisions.
  22. QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 11, 2012 -> 07:44 PM) Were those rumors ever substantiated? I mean, if there's that much smoke there's probably fire, but I never saw anything too definite. Never saw anything about him actually being close to resigning, either. But if they're this awful to watch, might as well kick him to the curb. Nah, I don't think so. I think deadspin had the story that if true that baby would be like 16 years old now.

I see where you're coming from, but the episode with Ralphie and the swimming lessons might have been the best episode of the series. He's been really solid this season.
  24. Wright banging and impregnating all those coeds. Not enough time for basketball!
  25. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 11, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) I have a few more details but unfortunately they are not good ones. She had back surgery last night and though it was a complicated surgery, she had come out of it OK and was in recovery with normal vitals. Sometime during a 40-minute interval between nurses checking in, she stopped breathing and her heart stopped beating. They were able to restart her heart, but she has never regained consciousness, and doctors have confirmed that she has extensive heart damage and no brain activity. They are going to keep her alive for 24 hours per what I guess is standard procedure, but she's more or less gone. I lost my Dad in January at age 66 and now my sister in December at age 35. What an awful year. God, that's rough. My condolescences man. Hope you and your family stay strong. Hopefully the doctors can give some kind of explanation for what happened.
