Whatcha drinkin'?
QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 10:05 AM) Just depends on the day. Normally every other, 1-3 a night. Weekends, different story haha. I'm the same - fri/sat usually drink to drunk one of the nights, don't drink the other. Bears games I always have a beer in hand. And then I usually have a few beers once or twice during the week. That'll change a little when Illini basketball comes back to weekday nights. Do more heavy drinking when nervous/anxious

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) I LOL'd. It was a joke. I do, however, want to knock my wife up for the pregnancy sexxx. I guess that's just me being a red-blooded man, though! Unfortunately in my experience pregnancy sex only lasted for a short period of time. On either side of that wonderful period of time you have "ugh, i'm sick all day and you think I want to have sex with you?" and "OMG i'm like an elephant, no way you're seeing me naked. Oh, you might also crush the baby." But man, those 3-4 weeks in the middle are nice. Back to TV, for you Homeland fans:

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) Wait... you think it makes sense to sue geologists for not correctly predicting an earthquake? Something that is nigh on impossible to predict? I would hold them to the same standard of care as their peers. If it's impossible to predict, fine, it's impossible to predict. But if it's not, and they negligently do their jobs, then yes, I think you should be able to sue them. I'm talking about a general philosophy here, not specific to this case.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) You can't really predict earthquakes, which is why this whole case is so bizarre. I'll excerpt the analogy from that post: You can't predict certain medical issues to a degree of certainty either, but you can still sue a doctor for negligently failing to assess your medical problem and reacting in an improper way. It's a factual issue and it would be difficult to prove, but I don't see why it's a problem to go after a Chief of police that is advising you of things he knows to be completely untrue. For a Chief of Police you'd have a willful wanton standard, for a scientist you'd have professional standard.

The environment thread
It won't, but I never understood this idea that certain professions (doctors, lawyers, financial advisers) can be held to a certain standard of care, but other people can't. Why would that be such a bad thing? You'd have to prove they were negligent (I haven't read that story, so I'm not sure if it rises to that level) but I'd want to be able to go after them if i'm relying on them for something and they totally f***ed it up and I got hurt as a result.

QUOTE (vandy125 @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 01:18 PM) Say hello to the coasts choosing the presidency every election. Nobody in "fly-over" country would have their concerns listened to. Yep, there'd be no reason to campaign in any place but major cities. "Who gives a s*** about farming? I'll boost mass transit funding. New trains for all!"

The Debates!
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 11:28 AM) It would absolutely boost growth. It just would not make up the revenue they claim it would. The problem is that for every tax cut there's always some massive spending that follows. We need tax cuts/tax modifications that directly impact the middle class AND a reduction in spending, including military spending. This, of course, is like kyrptonite to the two political parties. "ZOMG, we can't cut taxes! We have to pay for things!" "ZOMG! We can't cut military spending, our military will be so outdated!" Ugh, so stupid.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) Ripping on The Walking Dead when they were wasting 8 episodes trying to find a little girl or at some boring farm is one thing, but the first two episodes this season have been awesome. Rick's giving her the cold shoulder because she's knocked up with another man's kid. It's still a storyline. He loves her, but that s***'s complicated, son. I was so happy when Rick put that machete through that prisoner's head. Seriously, just sit back and enjoy The Walking Dead this year and stop picking it apart. The show is f***ing awesome right now! And i've admitted as such. All I pointed out was that Lori is still awful. Do other people seriously disagree with that?

The Debates!
QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 10:59 AM) Romney can shove fiscal conservatism up his ass as long as he wants to increase military budget and our presence abroad while cutting dollars at home. I'm happy to entertain ideas about budget slashing, etc. but he is not one I'm going to support. Increase military budget, cut healthcare reform and education spending. Okay. Well will the budget at least be balanced? No, we're actually going to cut our revenue. Don't harp on balancing the budget if your idea is essentially the same as Obama's -- I'm going to bridge the gap with increased revenue from a recovered economy. The only difference is one person will retain tax rates and much of current services while one will cut both, leaving largely the same deficit. Asinine. His buddy Paul Ryan is a sham as a fiscal conservative as well, it's disappointing. Will a decent conservative please stand up? And then sit down when it comes to legislating social issues? By cutting the revenue you're kicking the economy into gear and increasing your revenues over time. Obama's plan is basically nothing at this point. Wait it out. We've been waiting 4 years and not much has improved.

The Debates!
This a pointless debate though because even if Romney wanted to indict him, the international community wouldn't want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. It was difficult for Russia/China to agree to some of the sanctions we wanted, there's no way they'd go along with indicting him and bringing him before a court.

The Debates!
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) I don't see how Ahmadinejad's statements would come close to passing Brandenburg. Our speech laws and the values underlying them really are much more radical, for lack of a better word, than most of the rest of the Western world. edit: this paper covers this http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1000263 It wouldn't, but that's not the standard the world court could hold him to. And I think there's a reason for the difference in standards - an international court would be dealing with rogue "terrorists" (for lack of a better word), people with the means to influence followers to act violently. In the US you're going after citizens talking to other citizens.
-
The Debates!
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 10:16 AM) It seems odd for someone who wants to be the POTUS to want to hold international speech to a markedly different standard than what we hold at home. The US really is an outlier on speech, and that's a good thing imo. Well, our free speech laws aren't "markedly different" than that. Free speech rights are not infinite. You can be arrested for inciting violence, but the hurlde is pretty tough to get over (intentional, imminent and high likelihood of action)

2012 TV Thread
But that's crap. It doesn't need to be that way. They can split, or just not talk to each other. Or guess what, they can f***ing deal with it instead of talking about over and over and over again without actually talking about anything. It's boring as sin and it's a huge problem with the show. I'm resigned to the fact that it's going to be a part of the show, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. At this point Lori isn't driving him to do anything. The group has taken her place.

The Debates!
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 09:36 AM) hi kap! You don't necessarily need a third party to shift ideology. Look at the success the Tea Party had in shaping Republican ideas these past several years. You want more progressive (or conservative or whatever) politicians? Start local, start at the state level and begin building a bench of qualified, experienced politicians that share your positions. I'm still not sure if I'll vote for Obama or not, but I have that 'luxury' being in Illinois. A protest vote for the President could assuage my conscience, but it won't really send any message. Really though the beginning of the Tea Party was bringing back the 1980's early 1990's conservative talking points. It wasn't some new idea, it was more of a "hey let's stop being weirdos and get back to what we used to be like." Then the extreme right came crashing in and took it over.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 09:36 AM) Jon Stewart is a comedian, the problem is a lot of people take him as a journalist. He's not. He's a comedian with a larger voice/audience for political commentary than anyone not on Fox. Every democrat/liberal I know loves him and watches his show religiously. And guess what he does? The same smarmy mockery bulls*** you're complaining about.

The Debates!
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) There is no denying that. But even if his numbers weren't nonsense, he'd be mocked. Because that's what we do now. No, that's what the smarmy liberals in this country do. Obama says stupid s*** all the time but conservative point it out, they don't make a joke about it. Thanks Jon Stewart.

The Debates!
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2012 -> 08:51 AM) Well like I said, we have literally years worth of their campaigning now and 24/7 access to their campaign and surrogates' websites. A grand total of 4-1/2 hours weeks from the election really shouldn't matter much given the amount of information out there. But this is the only opportunity to see them engage with each other, that's the key. You want to see how they compare on the same stage. Yes, you shouldn't ignore the prior year or 2, but I think there's some value there.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 22, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) Really, you guys like Prime videos better? I have both services, and I haven't touched the Prime videos since the app came out for the Ps3 sometime over the summer. It didn't seem like it had anything that Netflix didn't, and the way it was organized (or UNorganized, I should say) was stupid. Have they finally figured out to group all the seasons of 1 show in to 1 section? I was always having to move past like 18 seasons of SNL because they had them each listed individually, and out of order. +1. Netflix sucks, but the selection is still better. I was hoping Amazon would bring some competition to the market and create a better experience for everyone, but nope! Still, I love the 2 day free shipping since I shop on Amazon all the time.

Europe in November
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 22, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) Don't fly RyanAir unless you absolutely have to. There are plenty of budget airlines that I had much better flights with, mainly EasyJet (Europe's Southwest essentially, though they charge for checked baggage). Also, 1 carry on per person, no matter the airline. So if you have a purse, that's your carryon, and they are VERY finicky about that no matter the airline (and it can be like $75 to carry on that extra purse plus luggage). Also, I know it's not really viable for most people, but if you can travel with one carry-on per person you'll save a ton of hassle/time/money. Just have your hostel/hotel wash youre clothes (most offer the service and it's typically cheap) when you need them washed. You won't waste your time checking/picking up luggage, it's easier to travel around the city without having to necessarily stop at the hotel first, and like I said, much cheaper. You can get a lot of flights for under 25 euro total, without checking baggage. Is it worth taking the train to Venice/Florence and back to Rome for the experience, or would that be like taking the Metra from Union Station to Schaumburg (i.e, boring).

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) Russ...the trio's of cities is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm leaning towards Rome/Venice/Florence (with a potential day trip or two somewhere in there) or Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. Might come down to weather at either place during that time of year. How many days/nights would you recommend in each city? My wife and I are debating this very same thing for next May - a few cities in Italy or a few in Spain. I'm leaning towards Italy to see the historical sites. You'll have to report back after your trip.

2012 TV Thread
So I thought Walking Dead was pretty good. Still too much Lori - two episodes of her trying to have the same conversation with Rick, why can't they just have it and get it over with? Why do we need 5-7 minutes each episode about it? But I liked the prisoner angle as it added more tension to the episode. Looking forward to next week with that "town" Andrea and the ninja lady find. Homeland - I'm still bored and confused by some of the story lines. particularly the one veteran's quest to find out what happened with Walker/Brody, and Brody's daughter dating the VP's son ..... what's the point of those other than filler? But wow, that ending was great.
