OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 07:41 AM) Alternative: Roberts was troubled that his legacy on the court might wind up being the striking down of this bill and all of the implications of doing so for completely destroying the ability of the US government to function. As opposed to his very clear Federalist position?

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 08:26 AM) My phone's only about a year old (Droid X2) and they haven't released an official update since 2.3. Annoying. My Droid Razr was supposed to get ice cream sandwich back in February. Supposedly they're rolling it out this last week, but I still haven't seen any update news.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 03:53 AM) In a direct quote from Robert Smith: Not that I believe Jabari will end up choosing Illinois. The ties to Nunn could be very important, though. I think they're best shot is to get both of them to commit as a package. But Illinois will have to make the tournament and be in the top of the conference next season to have any chance.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) Well not everyone over at Volokh agrees with you (that's what I've been reading mostly today). Really the term is useless. A holding is binding, but dicta is every bit as important for attorneys and judges to explain what the law is on any given issue (using the rationale of a decision is usually just as, if not more, useful than the holding itself). If I were to cite Roberts discussion of CC in this case it's going to be read as precedent. I consider that binding precedent.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) It's not entirely clear from what I can tell if the CC discussion by Roberts is binding opinion or dicta. He doesn't need to address the CC to find the mandate a tax and constitutional. It's binding.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) All Dems walking out right now on Holder vote should be voted out. Let's act like 3 year olds. Really they should have gone to a motel in Toronto until the hearing was over. A more effective Democrat strategy.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
Thought this was a good read, though it's a bit too glass half-full for me: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/geo...hY9V_print.html Of course, what this decision means is that even absent a Commerce Clause justification, Congress has still been allowed to pass legislation under its taxing powers, even though the legislation wasn't labeled as a tax. Whether or not a "tax" on healthcare it was proper for the government to do this becomes the secondary (or totally forgotten) question of Congressional authority.
-
OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
So, based on this decision, there's basically nothing to stop Congress from implementing just about any sort of measure to collect funds from the populace so long as it looks like a tax. Hell, they don't even have to CALL it a tax. Just make it work like a tax. *opens wallet wider*

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
The guy is life-long friends with the coach of one of the top hoops programs in Chicago (Smith) and he coached in the Chicago public league before moving onto the college game. This was a home-run hire. He's an immediate connection to the majority of Chicago recruits. Doesn't guarantee success, but it's a foot already in the door for Groce to seal the deal. Frankly at this point Illinois fans, myself included, need to step back and analyze the situation. There's been an entire change in the coaching/administrative portion of the basketball program. It's going to take time to get back to competing for conference titles year after year. Hopefully only a season or two, but it's going to take time and it's going to take a new roster.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 08:10 PM) Lol, BS call on Wade, but since he's the lord of begging refs for calls, I'm cool with it. That was bad, as were these two and-ones for Lebron. Just let them play, especially if he makes them. Westbrook gets hit that hard too but he never gets the call

Obamanation Re-election MegaThread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 11:55 AM) Of course, what's the other side of this issue that isn't being asked? Why do nations as a whole have health care systems? Why do they educate children? Is it out of the good of their hearts? No. Of course the reason why you have those systems in the first place is that they enable the economy as a whole. A person sprains a wrist, they go to the doctor and can quickly resume working. A child spends 15 years in school and becomes a...get this...productive member of society. So yes, there are costs to providing health care to people. But the reason why this argument failed in 1830 and the reason why it fails now...is that there are also benefits. A workforce can't get by solely based on wealthy investors founding hedge funds for their kids. I think there's a good argument that workers' compensation has basically killed this "productive workforce" argument.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:08 PM) CLE credits blow. +10000000000, though I found a pretty decent deal: Wait until January to renew your membership to the CBA (prorated, so like 60 something bucks for me, a 4 year attorney). Then for $125 bucks you can sign up for their "CLE Advantage" program which gives you access to all their CLE seminars (past and future during your membership period). They have a pretty decent selection to choose from, so it's better than the $200 packages with random legal crap you'll never need. There's also 7 hours of free professional responsibility credits through the ARDC (check the website) if you need more of those. My favorite thing about this whole process was watching a "Hot Topics in Professional Responsibility" seminar with 5-6 OLD ass attorneys talking about ethics and some of the new changes. I mean, they were REALLY into it talking about hypothetical and what the rules say and the changes they need etc. This one guy, at the very end, just railed against the entire CLE requirement (keep in mind he was probably paid, or at the very least hired, as a presenter for this seminar by the CBA). His main point was the fact that, especially for professionally responsibility hours, the system is creating unethical lawyers - just about every lawyer has to certify that they watched/attended these seminars, but the vast majority either fall asleep and don't pay attention, or if they're on the computer they turn it on and stop paying attention. Apparently he's petitioned the IL Supreme Court for the accounting of the whole CLE program, but they denied it. So as of now we have no idea how much money is being made through this program and where the money is going. There's zero rules for accounting and the Supreme Court has denied any request to look into it. I'm convinced the whole thing was created by a few of the big bar organizations as a way to make money and the justices were sold on it being a good idea to have a continuing education requirement.

And I'll edit one thing - I shouldn't say Stroger markets their cancer clinic as free. But it's part of Stroger and it works just like the hospital. If you walk in, regardless of your insurance situation, they treat you. They might try to get payment from Medicaid (which they'll happily assist you with applying for the program). But at the end of the day it's free because they don't collect. Hell, I had a situation where I had to inform Stroger that they were still owed payment.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:40 AM) Can you provide any sort of info on free cancer treatment at Stroger? I can't seem to find anything except some occasional free screenings, and even the funding for those are running out: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-02...rmal-mammograms You can't find s*** on Stroger's website. They have a free clinic though. One of my clients was receiving treatment there for about a year before she died. The cost to her? Zero dollars. Some paid by medicaid, the rest just eaten by Stroger.

Obamanation Re-election MegaThread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:32 AM) Damn, you're right. I don't know why anyone thinks millions in this country don't have access to health care. There's so many free clinics everywhere its a wonder that any for-profit hospitals and clinics can stay in business. eta: have you ever been without health insurance and needed health care? No, but I deal with this s*** and public health facilities pretty frequently as part of my job, my wife works for Rush and pimps their free services (and knows what the other area hospitals do), so I know a little more about it than reading blogs on the internet. Is it a perfect system? Are they provided the best possible healthcare known to man? No. But it's free. Absolutely, 100%, free. Zero expectation for repayment (generally). Especially for a lot of major terminal illnesses because hospitals/physicians need patients to try new treatments on and gigantic organizations and donors spend billions of dollars to fund projects. Go read up on how much free cancer treatment the American Cancer Society provides. My mom had melanoma (with a great insurance plan) yet the AMA still paid her plane ticket and treatment costs to go out to Bethesda Maryland for treatment. There are literally thousands of programs like this from local community hospitals up to gigantic national organizations. I forgot that since we've never had universal healthcare the bodies have been piling up for so long. So many people die on the streets because hospitals refuse to treat them. I forgot that people are making a big deal out of Quinn cutting Medicaid because no one ever uses that free money for healthcare. At the end of the day the people who die because of a lack of treatment just don't know where to find it. And so there I would agree the educational side of this issue needs to be better. But the sources of treatment are there for people that need it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) ER's can now treat cancer and other long-term illnesses, it's true! John Stroger has a cancer clinic that's free. Rush has a free cancer clinic. Most major hospitals in the area do. The idea that this country doesn't already have free healthcare to the poor/people who can't afford insurance is laughable.
