QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:21 AM) All I can say is look at Beck, Palin, Cristine O'Donnell, the whole creationist/anti-evolution movement, anti-science in general, etc. It's a dominant force for a sizable group of the right and there is no equivalent on the left. So basically anyone who questions the almighty science is uneducated? Anyone who believes in creationism is unintelligent? Again, the elitist label fits.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) CEO resigned=this exec had editorial control? Explain that please. I'm saying that he clearly had some influence given his position. Is he doing the reporting? No. Is he advising on the types of stories that would generate some money? My guess is yes. If he had no involvement in the process then the CEO wouldn't have any need to resign. But she did.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) Do we need to go through the repeated attacks on science and education and the constant derision of the college educated as "elitists?" With the way you guys have responded i'd agree with elitist part. More importantly, I'm not denying there aren't morons out there, but I dispute that the party/movement is a bunch of unintelligent hillbillies, or that they're any dumber than the left. You guys have your morons too.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) No, it's not like Fox News at all. That's false equivalence. Do we need to churn up all the official editorial guidelines leaked out of Fox over the years showing deliberate, blatant conservative bias? And no, I don't think an exec in charge of fund raising would have influence over another exec's turf. Or Morning Edition/ATC editorial control. Then why did the CEO resign?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:06 AM) I'm not sure anyone really thought NPR didn't lean left. Thing is, some of what he said is true - about the Tea Party and GOP twisting together in a way that amplifies the extremists, and the anti-intellectualism present on the right. But he obviously went over the line labeling the entire party, or movement, as racist. Based on what exactly?

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) Who was kicked off the team exactly? The only one you could even remotely make an arguement for is Bawa Muniru, and even thats debateable because he didn't play at all. Enlighten me. This was the event I was thinking about. I felt his entire transition was pretty shady. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3385998

I average about 20-22, sometimes mid 20's with my 4wd 2010 escape non-hybrid. bumper to bumper it's closer to 19 or 18. Agree with NSS that's it's great for camping/traveling, especially for 2 people and a dog. Enough "off-road" capability to be able to handle rough dirt roads and fields, but clearly not intended for serious offroading.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) There is a 4 way tie so you look to head to head among the 4 teams. Illinois was 3-2 against MSU, PSU, and Michigan. Michigan was 4-1. ah, ok that makes sense.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 02:31 PM) That doesn't make sense. Something either is or is not torture and it's not based on comparisons to other acts. If that was true, that would mean that if we could come up with things significantly more terrible than say pulling out fingernails, well, we have to question if pulling out fingernails really is torture! First, we don't always know whether something is torture or not. There's not a book out there defining every single act that is/isn't torture. Second, who said anything about moving the goalposts? We've established that somewhere on one side of the torture spectrum is pulling fingernails. That stays put. Similarly, we know certain acts that are not torture, like putting people in prison. Any act in between (or even outside of those two examples) are up for debate. That doesn't mean each act we've decided already is suddenly up for debate again. And how else would you determine whether something like humiliation is torture? You have to compare it to other acts of torture and determine if it rises up to that level. I guess i'm failing to see what's faulty about this way of defining terms. It's what I do every day in all of the legal briefs I write. I compare and contrast factual patterns to fit certain laws. The law doesn't set forth every possible factual scenario, so there's going to be some grey area. That's the only logical way to make a determination IMO.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 01:33 PM) Finally some rationale on why these comments have been made. I will argue however that there have been a small handful of teams that have been at the top of the rankings pretty consistently this year, unfortunately scheduling hasnt been all that great across the board. I guess it also depends how much weight you put on a team winning one of the tougher conferences. My big issue with the bolded is what's going on in the big east right now. It seems that the media loves to hype the big east because of how "competitive" it is. Well, it's pretty easy to hype that when you have so many teams. If highly ranked team A beats lowly ranked team B, it's somehow an excusable loss because of how tough the conference is. I mean which would you rather have, a conference with 3-4 top 25 ranked teams that have dominated the conference, or a conference with 5-6 legit top 25 teams that have lost some games to the lower end of the conference (of course purdue losting to iowa screws up this argument, but that's just one game)? Also, why is Michigan the 4 and Illinois is the 5 in the standings? Anyone know? Didn't Illinois win the head to head? And they have identical records. I don't get it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 08:13 AM) Of course, the first premise of your argument, that "there are worse tortures so how can you complain about this" is clearly faulty. The second is then undercut by the fact that he hasn't even been sentenced to anything or found guilty by any court. It's not even punishment...it's inflicting of humiliation and psychological torture to get him to confess and testify against other people in the case (assange). How does that make it faulty? We justify all sorts of otherwise illegal acts by using that tactic. "I know adult pornography when I see it." It's an undefinable word, so of course we're going to argue about whether X or Y is torture and justify it by comparing it to other acts.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 12:53 PM) Crazy Georgia State Rep. introduces bill that would make miscarriages illegal and punishable by death. http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2011/02...penalty-georgia Wrong. Like every other law in the country, it'd be the states' burden to prove that it was human involvement that caused the miscarriage. Not the other way around. You'd think these "smart" bloggers/reports would understand that basic tenant of our judicial system. Regardless, a pretty stupid bill from a pretty stupid politician.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) The original question had zero to do with Ohio State, so in an effort to keep both the homers and haters at bay, keep them out of th discussion. The original question is why, PRE tournament, do you and others say there are good teams, but no great ones in the country this year, and what is the criteria that a team has to meet to be called a great team? It seems to me this happens every year as people like to look back on previous years like they were ths outstanding crop of teams while the truth is they said the same things about that pool at the time as well. I'm in agreement that it's pretty asinine to compare different years. The problem is that this year there haven't been a lot of top 5 vs top 5 kind of games where one team clearly dominates another. Duke beat one top 25 ranked team this year and they're still probably going to get a number one seed. Ohio State's best non-conference win was an average Florida team and then a couple of good Big Ten conference wins. In 2005 at least, Illinois and UNC played a lot of top 25 teams and crushed most of them. All year long they were the two clear dominant teams. This year you just don't have that. There's about 6-7 teams that could win it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 11:22 AM) I don't know that she thinks she screwed up. And they're engaged. Huckabee has this nice-guy charming persona but he's got pretty terrible views underneath that wrapper. Does anyone actively seek out to get pregnant before they're married? And they were engaged after the fact. From what my gossipy, Perez Hilton fan of a wife tells me, this was just some random dude she worked on a movie with and is now basically stuck with him because she got pregnant. Edit: And why's it so terrible to say that families should consist of a family and that it's best if couples have a child when they get married? I agree he's gone too far here and it doesn't make much sense to point the finger at her, but I think that's the main "view" he's expressing.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 11:12 AM) I guess he forgot how well it worked out for Dan Quayle when he went after "Murphy Brown": http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/...an/#more-149072 While I might agree with his opinion (that she's a role model sending an involuntary message) it's pretty stupid to point that out. What is she supposed to do? Go into hiding? Get an abortion? Ok, so she screwed up. I'm guessing even she would admit that. But there's nothing to be gained by pointing the finger at her about it. It's not like she's promoting how great it is to have been knocked up before being married or in a committed relationship, or even that she's telling people it's ok to be a single mom. She's just a famous person who happens to be going through this. Now, if he's going after people in the media who glorify this type of situation, then maybe he's got a point.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) Yeah, to each his own. I have no idea who this psychopath is who updated the roster, but it has a 100% feedback rating and for good measure. He spent the time creating guys who don't exist AND making their faces ridiculously realistic. I feel like I'm looking at Brent Morel. I'm 1-1, lost opening day to the Indians 3-1 before coming back with Jake Peavy and pulling off an 8-0 victory. Adam Dunn heard the boo birds in the first game with 3 k's and a walk, while he hear the cheers with a double and a bomb in the 2nd game. The only downside of not upgrading is Bobby Jenks' face still on the outfield wall, lol. Is the 2011 schedule included with that roster? I normally try to follow the real team at least by week.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 10:05 AM) If you're correct, that these batteries have no realistic chance of lasting past 3 years, GM is going to be in for a world of PR hurt in 2013. It would make their 8 year/100k mile warranty claims bad-faith claims at least in the eyes of the public if not legally. These are not comparable to a laptop or cellphone battery because of the costs involved and what the warranty implies. Most people expect batteries to lose charge capacity over time. People spending $32k on a car with a 8 year/100k warranty on the batteries wouldn't have the expectation that their batteries won't work in less than half the warranty years. Think of tire warranties. Yeah, they're expected to wear down. But if your 60k tires wear out in 10k from normal use, they'll replace them. I'd argue that's a defect though, which would be covered.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 09:19 AM) You can charge any of them (Leaf, Volt, Tesla) with a standard 110V/15A outlet. That infrastructure is being built and will expand as the user base expands. We didn't have nation-wide networks of cell phone towers before people started buying cell phones. We didn't have gas stations every 1/2 mile before people started buying cars. The infrastructure and the user base will grow in a symbiotic manner. That's the natural technology life cycle. We're in the Early Adopter phase. The EV1 and the Tesla would have been "innovators" phase. Right, my only point is that I don't think the infrastructure is there yet to push demand much higher. Though I'd also add that investing in a 40k car is a little different than a cell phone (even the most expensive ones back in the day). You're asking people to invest that much money in a piece of technology that transports them over several miles. I wouldn't buy one without knowing that there are enough places in and around the city to recharge if I get stuck.
