Harvard bans men from gym for certain hours.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) I would say the consequences of each act are just slightly different. Totally agreed, but still. You shouldn't "justify" discrimination based on how limited it's effect is. -

Jenksismyhero replied to WilliamTell's topic in The Filibuster
I don't really care about the issue at hand, my issue is with the logic of those that are "supporting" it simply because it's "only" 6 hours and it's "only" one gym that's rarely used. Can we extend this logic to say, waterboarding? It's "only" happened about 6 times and it "only" happens to extreme inmates. So even though in theory it's a deplorable practice, it's infrequent use makes it acceptable. Or what about NSA wire taps? In the grand scheme of things it's quite narrow in use. I mean I know what you guys are trying to say - in reality it's not THAT big of a deal. But I don't like the logic. -
Last night was pretty bleh. No one really blew me away. It's too bad that Danny guy looks like a girl/acts like a girl. He's got one of the better voices, but I can't help but laugh through 90% of his performances (especially last night). I thought the dredlock guys song was good and was surprised that Simon enjoyed it. It's one of those songs that has a signature sound and he didn't quite pull it off, but I give him credit for trying.

The Show is solid. I give it an 8.5 or 9. RTTS is pretty cool, though I wish the load times were a little better.

lol, dang you beat me to posting this. What's funny is that my gf told me one of the male contestants was a former stripper at a "mostly male" establishment and this was the guy I thought of first.

I think the big thing for me was actually getting to play The Show as a demo. I was impressed even after playing about 50 games between the Red Sox and Rockies. I'm ubber-pumped to finally get the game today and start my Sox season. For anyone that has purchased The Show before, how is the franchise setting? Is it pretty typical and include all the normal management tools? One thing I liked about 2k7 (or maybe 2k5, I can't remember) was that you could open up your own ballpark and then slowly add features to it based on how much $$ and fans you made. That would be cool if The Show had that feature as well, but I haven't heard anything about it.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 07:46 PM) Who are all these single mothers "by choice?" Why is it their fault? Why is it that you heap none of the blame heaped on the blame on absentee fathers? It's not exactly like America is crawling with young men looking to get married after knockin up a girl. I don't know a single single-mother who would reached that status entirely "by choice." And I know more than a handful... If you're going to blame the wrongs of our prison system on single mother, at least get the cause of single mothers correct. While I agree that s***head fathers also need to be of some blame, lets be realistic. We all know that a HUGE drain on the social service costs in this country go to single mothers of MULTIPLE children with MULTIPLE fathers. In a crude and probably sexist way to put it: you shouldn't blame a passenger for wrecking the boat, blame the captain. I think anything after that is a condition of the environment, i.e. if you grow up as a kid stuck in the system, the odds are way way way way way against you to get out. I think throwing money at the educational system is also a waste. You can put a one billion dollar high school in the middle of the poorest, most uneducated spot in the country and it won't do a damn thing (something liberals, in my view, seem to think will work). Instead, I think money should be thrown at communities. Make people actually care about where they live and they might grow up/spend their lives trying to keep it that way. Step one, IMO, would be to remove the crutch we've given a lot of the poor in this country: free money and housing. Obviously we should have these services, but instead of the lifetime system we got, make it temporary, like it was intended to be. How are we supposed to persuade people to get educated and make something of their lives if they don't have to do anything for it. Yeah yeah, I know, they don't get much (trust me I've toured Cabrini Green and studied the homeless/public housing situation in and around Chicago). But they still don't have to work or even attempt to work for what little they do get. Hell, these days, especially in the transformed Cabrini Green area, "not much" is a phat (yes, p-h) 2-3 bedroom apt with w/d in-unit, stainless steel appliances etc etc, all for 100 bucks a month (seriously, the apartments in these buildings could easily fetch 2200-2400 a month in rent, but instead the tenant pays a hundred bucks and the city pays the rest). One lady actually COMPLAINED because she was being "FORCED" to pay 30 extra dollars a month on her electric bill (still a measly portion of the total bill because of other help she's getting). Not having to work for anything breeds crime. What else is their to do? Get a job? (speaking in generalities of course)

Im going with the Show I think. I've gotten the last two 2k games and have not been to happy - they're ok, but I hate the hitting and fielding. Everything seems on a delay. I've had a good time with the Show and feel its a pretty comparable to the mvp series (to a point). I'm also intrigued with the Road to the Show feature - being able to play SS or something sounds pretty cool. I liked that idea with NCAA 2008.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 23, 2008 -> 07:37 AM) I have a real hard time believing most of the cream of the crop non athlete students base their college choice on the success of a football or basketball team. Maybe in the mid to late 80s it helped schools a little bit before cable really exploded because only the top sports schools were on television all the time and basically received free advertising. BTW, McPhearson the Illini WR that Zook threw off the team for stealing a laptop, of course a far more serious crime than aggravated drunk driving in your book was sentenced to 180 days in prison. Smith only got a few weeks on a plea deal. Carwell was in the hospital for 4 days with a serious concusion, Smith initially thought he was dead, so like the coward he is, he ran. Smith gets a redshirt, so free room and board, free tuition, free books this year. There's something very slimey with that, and you know it. If he were projected to be a guy who scores 4 points a game, he would have lost his scholarship, most likely wouldn't have received the plea deal, and his life would be screwed. Certainly if you think Smith's offense is worthy of a second chance, you probably think McPhearson should have been slapped on the wrist. A) I don't think Soxbadger was talking about the "cream of the crop" applicants. If you have a school that has a 3.0 gpa for its entire student body, which increases to 3.5 because their sports programs are doing well, you're not getting the "cream of the crop" but you're certaintly getting much better students than you had before. Anyone denying the role of sports in the selection of a school (not THE factor, but certainly an important one) probably also believes that bball and football players are actually "student athletes." B) I'm pretty sure McPhearson was also caught with firearms, which yes, makes it much more serious than Smith. And you still haven't addressed the point that the State didn't punish Smith severly, not even as severly as McPhearson. Instead they gave him, what, like 2 weeks in jail and a couple years probation. I think the mental state required to drink and drive (and make stupid decisions thereafter) is much less than the mental state required to have guns and rob people. Soxbadger: attorneys/soon to be attorneys unite! (and I have the Bar in 3 days, I'm starting to freak out!) -
(1) check out EW articles on Lost, especially previews (come out Thurs morn) and recaps (come out Fri morn). The writer for EW just interviewed both producers and they said they would reveal the coffin mystery this season. (2) I believe that they also at some point told people to disregard the details in that newspaper clipping. And if you think about it, that makes sense (think about the details surrounding the person playing the character you're thinking of and (1) above.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 10:56 AM) I don't see how anyone can defend Weber and how he's handled the situation. If I was Brian Carlwell or a member of his family I would be outraged at Weber and the University of Illinois. It's pathetic that the basketball program "stands by" Jamar Smith because he can shoot and he's DJ Richardson's friend, but Carlwell gets pushed out of the program because he's having trouble dealing with a brain injury which was exacerbated by his teammates and an assistant coach leaving him injured in the car for who knows how long. It's a sign of how screwed up college basketball is that people are so outraged over Sampson making against-the-rules phone calls while no one really seems to care about what's going at Illinois. Someone explain to me where in the rule book it says "Thou shall not allow a player to transfer when he wants to." Cuz i'm pretty sure it does say, don't make too many phone calls, don't make too many phone calls while on probation, and don't lie to the NCAA. Oh yeah, totally comparable situations. Wtf is Weber and Illinois supposed to do? Carlwell isn't in good enough shape to play. Lets assume you're right and he still has lingering effects. Weber wanted him to take a year off to work on those problems. Isn't that the right thing to do? At the beginning of the year he said this. Carlwell chose not to. Instead, Carlwell chose, like an idiot, to sit on the bench all season. I'd imagine it finally came to a point where Carlwell was complaining and Weber finally said, look you're not going to play because of X,Y,Z, so deal with it. It was CARLWELL'S CHOICE TO TRANSFER. I don't think anyone was pushed to do anything. I think a good coach was being a good coach and instead of lying to a kid he told him the truth. Was Weber supposed to play him out of pity? Should he get a starting spot because he was involved in an accident with a teammate and suffered injuries? I don't get your logic. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) You do know Carlwell still suffers effects from the crash that nearly killed him, in large part due to the slow response time to the accident thanks to his "teammate" deciding he didn't need to call 911, but rather call Wayne McClain and let the neighbor call 911, don't you? Bruce Weber's comments on Carlwell were kind of like the program he runs, pathetic and out of control. Isn't that MORE of a reason to redshirt? If you still suffer from those effects then heed the words of your coaches and advisors and get your s*** together. Fact is Carlwell was recruited by the likes of MSU and UNC. He was a good get for Weber. Instead of working hard and trying to live up to his potential, he's done jack for two years. Obviously he has the excuse of the crash, but he had these issues before the crash and he's continued these issues a year after. And lets not forget that it was Carlwells choice to transfer because he's not playing. I'm pretty sure Semrau, who is essentially in the same position as Carlwell (with one year more of eligibility), is content with taking a free ride through college rather than work on his game and actually contribute to the team. And what do you have against Illinois exactly? Did you get rejected from the school? Are you holding a grudge? It's one thing to argue from a logical position, but everything you post with respect to Illinois is so blatantly biased its ridiculous. -
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 06:31 AM) You were enamoured with her boobs. She sucked. I agree about the crying. I actually missed last night, but did record it. But I chose the least painful way to go and looked up the results online. I read though that Seacrest more or less suckerpunched that Garrett kid with the way he booted him. Was it that bad? The gf and I thought it was pretty s***ty. They had all the guys sitting in a group after they performed their ubber-lame duet number. Then Ryan starts going on about singing, the show, just general BS. And then he says something like "well lets start talking to the guys and see how they're feeling tonight." He calls Peter Frampton over and says hey and then says something like "so how's it feel to be the first voted off." That's not word for word, but that's essentially how it happened. No questions or filler, just straight to the "sorry you're gone." And I also liked the fact that Simon was honest with the second guy kicked off. In reality, unless you're in the final 5 you're not going to be remembered, so you really don't have much of a chance to "hit it big" based on Idol. I mean if any of the 4 kicked off put out a CD in 2 weeks, unless they got major, major pub, I wouldnt know who they are. Paula kept saying "millions know who you are, keep trying, blah blah," but I agree with Simon - you can sing, like a million other people in the country, but you can't sing well enough to make it a career.

QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 09:44 AM) On an unrelated note, i was just cruising through some wikipedia pages on Lost and was shocked to discover that Jack and Claire were half-siblings. I guess i never caught on to that. It's never been confirmed, but you were able to piece the clues together - Jack's dad went to Sydney to see his kid before he died. There was some other piece of information too that proved Claire was that kid, I just can't remember what it is. I thought it was a pretty bleh episode. I think of all the characters Kate is by far the worst. Lilly is h-o-t-t don't get me wrong (I loved the outfit in the bed scene), but her character is so wishy-washy. One minute Sawyer, one minute Jack, blah blah. She annoys me more than anything else. Jack lying on the stand doesn't necessarily have to mean someone is directing him to do that. My guess is something bad happens on the island and while 6 losties get off, some are forced to stay behind never to be found again. I.E. some are dead and some are now part of Ben's group. I think Jack is lying not only to a) save Kate, but B) protect the real story of what happened on the island. And the Aaron thing I gotta admit I didn't see coming. See that's what I love about this show. At the end of season 3 when Kate tells Jack "I better go, he's probably wondering where I am," the writers left us with 9 months of "oh man, I bet it's Ben. No its Sawyer. No it's the Dharma people" and so on. They made you think it was going to be this huge reveal and a plot-changing piece of information. Instead it was a "logical," simple explanation.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 12:56 PM) Ive seen comments, not sure which ones your referring to? Are they the ones where he said Carlwell needs to lose weight and work harder? OMG! The truth! What an ass! -
Agreed. I was bored and found myself watching more of the Suns/Lakers game than Idol. I think I was with Simon the whole night - they were all bleh and nobody had a "wow" performance. Anyone else find the asian chick hot? I dunno what it is. Some angles she looks real good. I found it interesting too that on both nights they weren't hiding the backgrounds of all these folks like the article above led you to believe. Most admitted to their previous lives as signed artists or backups or whatever.

some blame goes his way. they've been trying to redshirt him for two years and he kept refusing. Bruce has essentially told him you're not playing, so... Edit: And what sucks is that Odon used to say that Carlwell was the most difficult player to go up against. That's how much potential he had. -
QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) The guys went last night. It was "Aiigght." My favorite was the guy with the guitar. Mostly they were all forgetable. Lol, ok Simon. No I agree though, most were pretty weird and odd. Too many slow songs with no emotion. Too many terrible Elvis songs. It was the first show though, hopefully they'll get better. I think the moment I'll remember is Simon calling the Peter Frampton look-a-like "pale" and in need of some sun. Also I thought the judges, especially Simon and Paula, sorta got ridiculous. I mean its funny when they go after each other, but Paula, as usual, was making no sense, and Simon, as usual, was being an ass, but the producers let them go for WAY too long. It was borderline annoying. Perhaps thats what they needed to fill 2 hours. Oh and I think it's bad how obvious the judges are with who they want to win. At least Paula likes everyone it seems like. But Simon has it clear who he wants to win: the sixteen year old or the auzzie. I thought the 16 year old sounds good (though his "thank you's" are REALLY annoying and over the top) but the auzzie's Doors cover was TERRIBLE. You simply cannot cover Morrison like a hack, which is how he sounded. And yet for some reason Simon loved it. I hate that I love this show.

NBA to hold outdoor game in preseason
Jenksismyhero replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Considering 99% of basketball is played outdoors, I say this is great (a stretch I know, but still. For the everyday joe that plays you play outdoors unless you can find a community center/arena open to the public). I think if it's a success, there should be more outdoor games. If they held one in Chi-town I'd pay to go. Anything to get away from the seizure-enducing environment that people call the United Center. -
If you're looking for a Wii just hit up a Best Buy when they open on a Sunday. You might have to try a couple times, but I've been there a few times the last 6 months or so and they always seemed to have some in stock. They go ubber-quickly though so make sure to get there a little before they open.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) MLB 08: The Show's demo was very fun. Agreed, I'll probably have to go buy that. The only thing I didn't like was the use of the sixaxis - you move the controller vertically to jump or horizontally to dive. Kinda weird.

I agree on that guy Josiah being different, something AI needs, but he couldn't back it up. Yeah he's got this terrible story and he's inspirational and yada yada - fact is when he told the band to leave and he sang Stand By Me "as [he] hears it in his head" it was terrible. Beyond terrible. I can give you as much tears as you want as to why I love baseball and should be playing for the White Sox, but the fact is i'm 26, out of shape, and would probably go 0/20 against MLB pitching. Who wants to see that? The 16 year old has a great, great voice. I didn't catch his story, so I dunno if he's also playing the sad story line too, but either way he's got some skill. Does anyone know why the irish chick got dropped?
