QUOTE (lostfan @ May 31, 2009 -> 08:28 PM) You mean with the baserunning? Getz hit a line drive to the warning track with the bases loaded, AJ scores, Anderson was being held at 3rd with Fields between 2nd and 3rd. Anderson decides to ignore the sign, goes, and beats the throw home, meanwhile Getz is advancing to 2nd. Fields ends up being stuck because he was waiting for Anderson to tag and doesn't have time to go to 3rd, but he can't go back to 2nd because Getz already advanced so he ends up getting thrown out. Yeah, in the scenario, you gotta be waving in Anderson as soon as you see that ball go over Guillen's head. It'll take a perfect relay, and worst case scenario, you got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and a 1 run lead. However, this year has made me realize how truly bad of a baseball player Jose Guillen is. He gets horrible reads in the OF, never set up properly, and on offense, he never seems to come through in key situations for the Royals. If I was a GM, I would never have Guillen on my team. -

Thanks, I had a feeling he was a bum. He didn't state a single source, not even an anonymous one when he first announced this. This guy should be working for the New York Times. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2009 -> 08:29 PM) His swing is too long. It is not a coincidence that he makes he best contract with two strikes when he shortens up. I disagree. Josh handles the breaking balls the best, and when he's behind in the count, he's gonna see a lot of breaking balls low and over the plate or away. For instance, his hit today vs. Greinke was a curve low on a 1-2 count. That's a pitch he's always been able to handle. I don't get why pitchers don't challenge him up and in with fastball more often. If I was a pitcher, every time I got 2 strikes on him, I'd challenge with a fastball on the inner portion of the plate above the belt. He can't hit that pitch if it's over 90 mph. As for not being able to hit the meatball right down the middle on 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, it's mainly because he's afraid to pull the trigger, IMO. Yes, his swing is long and he has slow bat speed which makes it a lot tougher. But the whole world knows a fastball is coming, but Fields doesn't pull the trigger until it's a mili-second to late and he fouls it away. His long swing and slow bat speed come into play when he has 2 strikes on him. He's up there trying to protect, and when he gets that fastball, his very late and rarely makes contact if it's over 90 mph. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 31, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) You're going to say you don't make outlandish statements fairly regularly? Some might call them outlandish, but I'm usually right. I don't want to act conceded, but I get a lot of grief on here for being some crazy goofball that doesn't know anything (I got the award to prove it), but the reality is, I know baseball and I'm not afraid to make statements on players based on what I see from them, and not what stats show me. Also, if I saw this Clayton Richard last year, I would have never been wrong about him

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) Who would we have sent to Tampa Bay that is comparable, WITHOUT adding salary to Tampa? Not sure, depends on who Tampa likes. We'd have to add a couple more players to deal because Joyce is more MLB ready than any OF prospect we have, but I'd figure someone like Shelby would be involved.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) lol, if you did this for every outlandish statement you've made you'd never have to buy food again in your life. Oh, because I've been so wrong many times before. Please list all times I've been wrong. Clayton Richard... already admitted that one. Original Nick Swisher trade... oh wait, nailed that one. Ryan Sweeney... hasn't really panned out either way, but anyone can make a legit argument between him, Anderson, Swisher, and Young and who'd be the better option. Josh Fields... jury's still out. Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnastine... dead on again. Please, add to the list of all my wacky and crazy predictions.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ May 31, 2009 -> 06:47 PM) Makes you wonder why these guys wouldn't want to come here... if they are afraid to pitch in the AL then we don't need those p**** ass b****es anyway. who is that in your avatar? -
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 31, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) so in summary, before both of their breakout years, they were both mediocre, they both went away from the majors for a similar amount of time(Greinke for head problems, Lee for inneffectiveness), and both of them had breakout years(although Greinkes isnt finished yet and Lee has a Cy Young on his mantle), and the only real difference is their age You are right, nothing similar Oh oh oh, I get it, you saw the stuff they have so you know The thing is, Greinke was never mediocre. He was an elite prospect who got sidetracked due to his mental problems. Greinke was always considered a potential stud and he has some of the best stuff of any pitcher in baseball. Lee is a solid pitcher with mediocre stuff. He had a fantastic year last year, but have you ever heard of career years? If Lee comes anywhere close to his 2008 season (and I'm not talking W-L wise), I'll eat crow. But I'd be surprised if he finishes the season with an ERA under 3.5. Also, no one in their right mind would take Lee over Greinke.

QUOTE (tommy @ May 31, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) As of right now on the bottom line on Comcast Sports Net: "Report: Roy Oswalt would not agree on the trade to the White Sox" EDIT - Beat me to it, but it's clear this rumor is picking up not only in Chicago, but also in Houston. That makes it sound like we had a trade completed. -

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ May 31, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) White Sox Targeting Bedard, Oswalt By Steve Adams [May 31 at 2:53pm CST] Don't expect Kenny Williams to just sit back and wait for Jake Peavy to change his mind. According to Joe Cowley at the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox general manager has shifted his focus to Mariners lefty Erik Bedard and Houston's long-time ace Roy Oswalt. Cowley says that manager Ozzie Guillen says he never knows what's next with Kenny. Cowley also has comments from A.J. Pierzynski, Jim Thome, and Clayton Richard on the situation. We heard earlier this week that if the Mariners move Bedard, they'll be asking for a package similar to or greater than what was offered for Peavy. I can't see Williams ponying up like that, but both aces will require a sizeable bounty from anyone who targets them. If so, they can go f*** themselves. Bedard is 30, a FA after the year, and is a health risk. Sucks for them that they got the worse end of the deal, but if they want to get anything for Bedard before the deadline, they should explore the idea of not asking for a ridiculous price. -

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ May 31, 2009 -> 06:12 PM) Close the thread down....Oswalt won't waive his no trade clause to the Sox Jose de Jesus Ortiz, or whatever the hell his name is, didn't give a single source. Right now, I'd say it's pure speculation of Jose's end. Anyone here knows Jose's reputation? Is he solid, or is he a joke like some of the Chicago writers? -

QUOTE (jimmiething @ May 31, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) Ok first time posting but anyways I think it would be very very bad for the sox to have to call up Beckham to play third base this season. There is now way The Cuban Pimp is ready for the big leagues and in my mind I don't think there is any doubt that Beckham could hold his own right now in the big leagues. That being said, the reason Beckham is so highly reguarded as a prospect is he is such a good hitter for a middle infielder. Now if he plays a good 3rd base and hits how people project him to hit he will be a nice player but by no means a superstar. Going along with this,if Josh loses the job to Beckham, Fields becomes virtually useless to us in trades in that his trade value really has never been as low as it is now. So best case scenario for me, Gordon continues to succeed in the minor leagues and Josh keeps hitting the ball like he has over these past few days. Next year we can hopefully trade Getz of Fields for a good major league ready pitcher or outfield and have Beckham step in and be the savior all of the southside expects him to be. Ideally, yes, that would be the situation. But the whole idea of Beckham losing value as a 3B and such is crap. You don't make out the lineup so a player can be considered a "superstar" at a position. I like to use the Michael Young example. Superstar on offense at SS. However, now that he is at 3B, does he mean less to his team? Has his value decreased at all? No. He's still a great hitter whether you have him play SS, 2B, or 3B. -
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 31, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) And what makes you say that with 100 percent certainty? The comparison is very valid, Greinke has been doing pretty much nothing until this year, and he finally put it together with his talent, which is exactly what happened with Lee last year. Lee was a very highly touted prospect, he isnt some out-of-nowhere scrub who had a nice year. Lol, their situations aren't even close to being similar. When Greinke first came up in 04, he had a very solid rookie season. ERA below 4, 8-11 W-L, but solid periphials. Plus, he had dominating stuff. He also dominated in the minors. However, in 05 and 06, Greinke had his mental problems with depression and such, and that really set him back. He came back in 07 in a relief role, and really did good and eventually started 14 games. In 2008, he finally began to break out and became a top of the line starter for the Royals. Now, he is completely broken out, and at the age of 25, he's been the best pitcher in baseball for over 1/4 of the season. If Greinke didn't have those other problems, we could have began to see this pitcher 2 years ago! Cliff Lee on the other was 30 last year, and before that he was mediocre. He has good but not great minor league numbers, and before 08, he was just a decent pitcher. In fact, in 07 he was god awful and even got sent down at one point. All of a sudden, when he turns 30, he finally finds it and becomes a cy young type pitcher? It was most definitely a fluke year. He's decent, but no stud ace, Cy Young caliber pitcher.

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 31, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) I really don't want to deal with another "will he or won't he" couple of days where a guy decides if he wants to waive his NTC. Oswalt is no where the type of b**** Peavy is. With Oswalt, we'd likely find out within a couple of hours. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 31, 2009 -> 05:26 AM) I want to take this opportunity to say HAHA at all the people who were dogging Edwin Jackson over the offseason. He's another guy I was mad that the Sox didn't pick up. You and me both. I remember we got blasted by a lot of people for saying that, but you can't teach the type of stuff Jackson has. Anyone who says we couldn't have offered more than Joyce is just talking silly, because there is no way the Rays were expecting him to be their starting RF this season.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 31, 2009 -> 09:51 AM) The Rays were looking for a starting RF with some good pop so they dealt from their surplus of starting pitching and got Matt Joyce who put up an .831 OPS and .240 ISO in limited major league action last year (277 PA) and sported a .938 OPS and .215 ISO for AAA Durham in 174 PA before being recalled earlier today. He'll act as their starting RF. The Sox had no comparable piece within their organization to dangle assuming they were even interested in Jackson. puh-lease. You can't honestly sit there and tell me we couldn't have offered anything better than Matt Joyce. If the Rays actually thought Matt Joyce was going to be a starting caliber RF, their stupider than I thought. You don't trade pitchers with Jackson's stuff who's shown he can be at least decent for players like Matt freaking Joyce. It was just an incredibly stupid trade by the Rays, especially if they thought Matt Joyce would be the answer in RF. If anything, they already had a very similar player to Matt Joyce on the roster, Gabe Gross. Look at some of the other numbers besides OPS and ISO (I don't even know what ISO is and I really couldn't give two s***s). Joyce's career minor league average is .277. Wow! He averaged 10 homers a year! He's a real slugger from RF! His K:BB is 2:1! From looking at his numbers and what I've seen of him with the Tigers, at best he'll be a Gabe Gross type of player. That ain't bad, but trading Edwin Jackson for that is beyond retarded. Sonnastine should have been the pitcher they traded this offseason, and Sonnastine for Joyce would have made a ton more sense. However, I don't know what was going on through the heads of GM's around the league.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 31, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) I really think Greinke's this year's version of Cliff Lee, but a bit better. He'll end up with an ERA near the mid 2s by the end of it all and win around 20-22 games. What do you mean this year's Cliff Lee? Cliff Lee was a fluke. Greinke, on the other hand, is for real and has the stuff to prove it.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 31, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) Batters are hitting .135/.164/.135/.298 against Zack with RISP with 21 K in 52 AB (40% K rate). Only 8 runs have scored in 57 opportunities. 14% success rate. He's allowed 2 hits in 22 AB w/ RISP & 2 out with 8 K's and 1 BB. Only 2 runs have scored in 23 opportunities. 9% success rate. He's loaded the base 4 times and has struck out all 4 batters that have come to the plate. He's faced 283 batters this season and has allowed 15 extra base hits. Incredibly scary: .203 batting average against but a .290 BABIP which is exactly where it's supposed to be. He's due for an outing where he gets rocked. -

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ May 31, 2009 -> 11:15 AM) I think it's more likely that Jeff Marquez wil put up numbers this year similar to a 2008 Javier Vazquez than having the Sox acquire a top of the rotation starter without giving up Richard. I disagree. For someone like Oswalt, he's already leaving his prime, has an ERA in the 4 range, and if we take on the whole contract, that's freeing up a good chunk of salary space for the Stros. If they want Poreda and Richard, they can go f*** themselves. It ain't worth it to us to give up both for Oswalt. Haren or Peavy is a different story. -

QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ May 30, 2009 -> 10:08 PM) Want a good laugh... I found this on an Astros Message Board. I was listining to mad dogg sports and they believe the White Sox would be a perfect fit for Oswalt. They Suggested Roy Oswalt J.R. Towles Miguel Tejada and Jason Micheals to the Sox for Clayton Richard Gordan Beckham Aaron Poreda Brandon allen Tyler Flowers and Dayan Viciedo. They believe the Sox would be willing to go that far for aquiring a Ace SP and some bat help with Quintan headed back to the DL. The Also mentioned that a Deal with the Rays could go down when Valverde comes off the DL. They believe the Astros could show case Valverde for a couple of games and try and Target Wade Davis and Tim Beckham. they didnt go into spacifics but they believe the Astros have gone restless after the Matsui experament. If the Astros could get these 2 trades done . They would have the Beckhams , Tim and Gordan up the middle whom both can hit and steal bases which would instantly improve the teams speed, Micheal Tim and Gordan for 220 total bases stolen would be fun to watch alot of pitchers make bad pitches when the the speed is on the bags. Not only is the original trade proposal one of the stupidest things I ever read, the next one with the Rays is just way beyond retarded. Yeah, the Rays are gonna trade Tim Beckham for Jose Velverde. Lostfan, do you still have that sig, cause it applies directly to that post. -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 30, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) Take away his 1 fluky game and his OBP drops below .300 and no that's really not any better than what I expected, that's awful. The leadoff spot is still a big whole. As for his many assists: when you have a noodle arm they're gonna take some real stupid chances on you, I give Podsednik credit, he's gotten those lollipop throws to the bag on time. lol, what a terrible argument. Whenever a player has less than 100 AB's, one game can give you a big boost up or down stat wise. Why can't you just admit that Pods has been better than expected. He's been far from great, but he's giving good AB's, and putting the ball in play. He isn't the answer at leadoff, but he's certainly the best option we have right now. -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 30, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) Podsednik sure is living off that one game in Anaheim. Even if you take away that one game, there is no denying that Podsednik has been far better than expected, both offensively and defensively. If Getz doesn't take his eye of the ball yesterday, Pods would have had another assist. -
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 30, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) If he keeps pitching like this...he'll be the 4th starter and Colon will be 5th. Richard is kickin' some tail right now. He still qualifies as a rookie, right? So, if he keeps this up, there's no reason to think why he wouldn't have a good shot at ROY.
-
QUOTE (shipps @ May 30, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) I said this in another thread already but we really do need to pick one of Poreda or Richard to move forward with. We cant have a 4 lefty rotation, can we? I don't care if it's an all lefty rotation, if they can pitch, who cares?
