Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 06:16 AM) Why would Cincy want Young and Rogowski? They have plenty of 1b/OF position players. They would want SP most likely. Possibly Tracey, Baj and Liotta. Only Liotta could go in a trade, both Sean and Baj are on the sox 40 man

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 05:16 AM) why would we give crede a long term contract ? I guess you've missed Joe's gold glove defense this yr, and the fact that there are few guys for 3b out there to replace him. A three yr deal along the lines of Arow and Uribe isn't out of the question for Crede. The way Ozzie has been gushing all yr about Joe, it's safe to say Crede should stick around for a while

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) I thought the Yanks only paid for some of the contract this year, and not next year. If that's the case, jose at $8 mill isn't a very good bargain.

QUOTE(S720 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 07:14 PM) Beck: I thought Contreras' contract is $6 mil/year. The Yankees eat the other $2 mil. I think you're right. But I'm not sure if another team would have to pick up the entire $8 mill or get the sox discount

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 06:15 PM) I don't think Sox will lock up Crede to a multi-year deal. Also, I fully anticipate the Sox trying to trade Contreras and Marte this offseason. It depends with Joe. I see his defense as a huge asset that the sox might want to lock up. Esp. with few options in the minors and around the league. Jose and Damaso very well could be dealt. If Jose steps it up this postseason, he could stick around. Though highly unlikely, as he'll probably throw in the pen. Paying $8 mill for a 5th SP isn't very wise. If he's still inconsistent, say hello to Mr Bmac. With COtts' emergence, Marte could bring back some very good talent.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) The Sox have shown a history where they directly link their payroll to their attendance revenues. Just from an amatuer observation based on this years attendance trends, we should be looking at a payroll of at least $90 million next year. If the Sox can somehow make it to, or win, the World Series, we should be around $100 million. Esp with the sox probably locking up guys like AJ, Garland and crede, payroll should increase.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) beck why must the payroll be the same next year, why won't payroll be more next year? Makes sense, we will draw 2.3 million fans this year plus playoff revenue. I think we will add to payroll not keep it the same. I was saying the payroll would increase, and that trading guys ala Lee and not resigning Maggs wouldn't really be needed.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
I found this on how a possible deal with ATL [before the deadline] could have been structured. It didn't say how much deferred money CIN. has to pay Griffey, though the writer seemed to think that CIN. could pay that part of his contract, with ATL paying the rest. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=cita...adel&type=story

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(Capn12 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:27 AM) I think people need to realize how this will impact the Sox not only for the rest of 2005, but the length of the contract. I'm not saying I'm against the move at all, but financially, the Griffey deal is a trainwreck. If a deal did go through, payroll would increase to fit him in. The sox aren't going to cut payroll [carl and Frank would say their goodbyes though; and I could see Contreras being dealt with BMac replacing him] and cut corners elsewhere in future yrs in order to fit in his contract. Though like every team, they could sell off higher paid players if they are out of the playoff hunt by the deadline in 2006 and beyond. Also, the sox couldn't make a deal like this unless they also had good minor leaguers [hence cheap and affordable] ready to make an impact in the yrs ahead.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 10:03 AM) No doubt. The thought of Griffey hitting 3rd in our lineup is just to good to be true though, therefore I don't think it'll happen, good reason huh? The thought of adding a guy like Griffey to the middle of the sox lineup is the stuff of fantasies and fairy tales. Stranger things have happened though

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) Right, atleast if he gets through a deal is possible. You'd think from the Reds side that this may be the best and one of the only times they could trade Griffey. There's no way that the reds have gotten their money back on the Griffey investment. Even Lidner would have to agree

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 09:43 AM) That's fantastic news. If the Yankees aren't putting a claim in on him he'll get through. But that's just the first step. Getting the Reds owner to change his mind is also a huge hurdle. Though IMO, if everyone on the reds side is in agreement about the trade but the owner [which getting rid of a huge contract and getting a potential star like Young makes very good business and baseball sense] the reds could probably make the owner see how it could benefit the reds in the long and short term

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
Maybe we'll have answers soon. http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-ssep12.html If true that the Yanks didn't claim him, and some team did, makes sense the sox put a claim in. It'll be interesting to say the least

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) I think, and I may be 100% wrong because the waiver rules read like stereo instructions, that if a team claims him and the Reds don't pull him back the team is 100% on the hook for the whole contract and they get him with no trade involved. If Reds pull him back they can either work out a deal or keep him. Which I think is why a team can't just block him from clearing waivers unless they have a clear understanding with the Reds that a deal would be worked out. That's my belief as well. Any team putting a claim on him could be liable for the full contract. Few NL teams would do that, w/ his injury history. The cards were mentioned. But they have Edmonds in CF and Pujols for 1b. Only an AL team could take on Griffey's contract, where he can at least DH to save his legs

QUOTE(56789 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) What does Griffey have against Tucson? Griffey lives in FLa and would like to have ST there as well

Stark on Griffey
QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 08:33 PM) Wasn't Rogowski in the original deal? He's on the 40 man. Yes. I couldn't see the exclusion of Rogo as a deal breaker though.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
from this weeks Sports Weekly p. 13. "Ears Wide Open": bob nightengale "Cin. Reds CFer Ken Griffey Jr talked to his family last weekend and says he may be open to accepting a trade to the White sox if he clears waivers." other excerpts: further talk that said according to 6 Sox and reds officials "a deal was completed and approved by Reinsdorf and the Reds president John Allen" "Teams plan to revisit the deal if Lidner changes his mind." ""Junior is open to the possibility" according to his agent "We orginally gave he Reds 3 teams that we would accept a deal, but that's not to say we wouldn't listen to the White Sox." "the only issue is that he'll be spending six weeks in Tucson. but that doesn't preclude us from listening. And he will listen."

This is how we have to win
and those performances are from the sox #4 and #5 starters. I'll take it, with the offense bound to step it up a bit

Who are you and what have you done with
I give Mariotti credit for looking past his little personal squabbles and seeing the sox for the baseball team they are. These sox just keep proving even their most ardent critics wrong by playing good solid, fundamental team ball. They just have to keep up the same intensity they've been playing with all year.

Brad Fullmer
Looking at BA, I noticed Brad Fullmer is listed on the Charlotte Knights roster. He hasn't been in any games there. I'm sure he's played somewhere in the minors but I haven't seen his name come up anywhere. Any one heard anything about what he's been doing this yr? I know last yr wasn't that good in Texas, hitting only .230. I don't know what he has left. But he doesn't see the type to help the sox this yr.

White Sox Winner
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 03:20 AM) let's go white sox. sure, ozzie should have brought Hermanson in to start the 9th, maybe he will learn from this. With the day game following this one, I could see why Ozzie didn't start w/ Dustin. Keep his pitch count down, have him able to pitch today as well. Politte was there to face the RH hitting ARod, and Marte then to face the LH hitters, with Dustin waiting in the wings. Cotts was warming up as well Rivera or Gordon didn't come in in the 9th either. The Yanks had to use Sturtze when they didn't want to as well, after Embree gave up the HR. Yanks fans could second guess Torre for not bringing in one of their bullpen aces. Yet its a 162 game season and no one can throw every day of even every other day all yr. The sox had a 2 run lead to start the 9th to play with. The easiest thing to do would be to start the 9th with Dustin. Yet Ozzie has shown he's not going to do what most people expect. I don't think it's him trying to be a "genius". But trying to find the best matchups while saving his bullpen from being overworked. You or I may not agree with Ozzie. But there is more to his decisions than we fans see

A spark for the sox down the stretch
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 08:30 AM) Anyways, Owens has been in the minors for pretty much just over a full season now. I think they'll want to see how he does in Charlotte next season, but he projects to be a 4th OF in the long - term, unless he can keep hitting. Anderson will be a September call - up, but the Sox can always call him up before then and use him in the playoffs. He could be used in the DH spot instead of Timo, and could also be used in the OF, instead of Timo. That's the key. The Dh spot [or Timo's spot] could be used much better. There should be no reason to have him hitting on a semi regular basis when the sox have better hitting prospects in the minors. Saying Owens is ready may be a stretch [though at age 24, he may be ready before others in the system--and his ability to get on base via the Pods way, the single and bunt fits the kind of player the sox could use now rather than a HR guy]. But someone should be able to get better AB's than Timo. Anderson, if healthy, definitely.

A spark for the sox down the stretch
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:39 PM) Why not just call up Ross Gload? He's (Owens) not great at stealing bases. He's 31/47 on the year, so he's right about at the break even point. He wouldn't play much, either -- Ozzie's got Timo. Gload should be up here. It's dumb that he isn't up here. It's absolutely silly that we have a guy who put up a 115 OPS+ down in the minors (in a sizeable amount of at-bats, too). My thinking is that the sox have the opportunity to try something different that could pay off big, like having a minor leaguer make the playoff roster. The sox already have made one such move in Jenks. Ross Gload is a proven bench player, with little upside or ability to spark a team. The sox don't need to add a guy like Owens. But if it worked out and he hit better than .275 with his speed and ability to handle the bat [8 SH, shows good bunting ability], he could help the club in the playoffs by giving the sox regulars a rest in late august and early Sept. He wouldn't make the playoff roster [not unless he hit over .300 and was stellar in all aspects of his game]. But he could still help the club. A move like this would have little downside, as the sox could play a rookie or two, give them a chance to succeed, and even if they failed miserably, the sox would still make the playoffs.
