A deal w/ the D-Rays makes sense
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:10 PM) How much f'ing worse can the guy be than Marte? If he comes in and gets out two lefties...he's already BETTER than Marte. Honestly, at this point, I'd just as soon dish Marte and grab a LHP off the scrap heap because the one of the two we have in the pen right now can't get our a LH to save his life. Kline or Embree--I'm sticking to it. I think the sox are as fed up w/ Marte as you. He's had one very solid appearance in the two yrs Ozzie has had him. His time is up. I could live with a Kline or Embree, provided of course the sox upgraded at closer/ set up with a guy like Wagner

A deal w/ the D-Rays makes sense
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:04 PM) I was reading an article on the D-Rays yesterday and IIRC Piniella and Lamar seem convinced now that if the D-Rays can upgrade the pen like the Sox did this off-season, they'll be a much better ball - club next season. Someone like Jeff Bajenaru would make ideal sense to them along with say Marte and Tracey for Danys Baez (and that's probably a minimum price that Lamar is asking for). Which makes a fit between the two clubs pretty decent. The sox have guys for the rotation [bMac and Tracey] and the bullpen [baj and Jenks, and LH's like Meaux and Munoz, etc] If the Sox could somehow parley Marte into Wagner [Philly would be idiots to refuse a package of Baez and Marte for Billy], that makes sense. But trading Marte for Baez isn't all that big of an upgrade, IMO

A deal w/ the D-Rays makes sense
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:02 PM) I don't really see what being in the same division has to do with anything.. The DRays would be very familiar with the sox top minor leaguers in both AA and AAA. Which means a deal could be done relatively quickly [the scouts would already have seen the sox guys play and know if they could be a good fit for them].

A deal w/ the D-Rays makes sense
In looking at the DRays minor league guys, they only have one guy with more than 4 saves higher than low A--30 yr old Lee Gardner with 11 in AAA. A guy like Jenks would have to be attractive in a deal.

A deal w/ the D-Rays makes sense
If recent reports are true, and the sox are interested on getting Aubrey Huff and Danys Baez, it makes a lot of sense. TB would be very up to date on the sox prospects, with both their top minor league clubs in the same divisions. The D-Rays need the most help with their pitching, both SP's and relievers. Getting a SP prospect better than BMac in today's market would be hard for them to turn down. If the Sox added a guy like Jenks [one of the better closers in the minors] to a deal, good lord would that give the sox some flexibility in doing another deal for say Billy Wagner. I'm not sure what else TB would be looking for. But the two biggest weak spots, bullpen and SP, could be exactly what the sox have to offer.

Burnett looks like a Keeper
At first, the D-Rays interest in a MArte for Baez deal didn't make sense. Yet Marte's cheaper, signed for 2006, and could be dealt for a lot of talent. A "lights out" LH reliever [going by the stats] does have a lot of value.

Rumor: Sox "hot" after Wagner
QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 01:12 PM) stark said the sox have picked up interest and are making a push for guardado now too........he also said the sox could send a slew of young prospects for both huff and baez Baez I'd trade. Huff, I'd keep.

Rumor: Sox "hot" after Wagner
QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) Let's see Houston just swept them and beat Pedro, well the Mets when Pedro pitched. Oh, Houston is also 9-1 in their last 10. Although I think Wade should think about a deal he won't. The white flag deal is very similar to this in that although they are only 3 1/2 games (or something) back the fans, as they should, still believe the Phils have a shot. Their problem is that their division is just tough enough for them to make it hard. I agree the Phils aren't going to "white flag" it [ie, trade vets for prospects]. But if they could get guys who can help them this yr [like Baez and a SP], the Phils would still be getting help to contend for the playoffs. With the sox being mentioned w/ Baez, they could spin him off to the Phils as part of a package for Wagner.

Rumor: Sox "hot" after Wagner
An update on Wagner from today's boston Herald: "It's no secret the Red Sox need an upgrade and they have Philadelphia's Billy Wagner near or at the top of their wish list. The problem is that the Phillies have not wanted to negotiate, primarily because they still believe, somewhat justifiably, they have a shot at the NL wild card. But with Wagner a free agent next year, and Ugueth Urbina already on the Phillies roster, the Red Sox (among other teams) still believe they have a shot at shaking the hard-throwing left-hander loose. Third baseman Kevin Youkilis, catching prospect Kelly Shoppach and starter Bronson Arroyo are three names being heard as an appealing package. Wagner, by the way, is traveling with his family, extra clothes and extra suitcases on the Phillies' current road trip." ---------------------------------------- No way will Boston give up those three, mostly Youkilis. Boston may try and trade Mueller but they'll keep Kevin. If Wagner is preparing to be traded, the White Sox will beat any offer for him, no doubt. Getting AJ Burnett and hoping Jose Contreras pitches well in the pen can't beat getting a sure fire closer like Wagner.

The Screw Burnett, Get A Bat
If the sox don't get Burnett, I'd like to see them get a bat like Overbay, a UTL IFer [vizquel is the ideal so Uribe can be the UTL guy but that's not happening], and a bullpen arm like Erye or Villone. No way can the sox get Burnett and all these other peices. So, you could count me in

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
I could live with an Anderson and Tracey deal for Overbay.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 08:10 PM) I don't think we could just froget about Carl like that. He has not hurt us. I could see the sox resign CArl for DH, and not keep PK.

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
With both MIL and the Sox being in the southern league, they should be well aware of each others talent in AA and those who went onto AAA that played in Huntsville and Birmingham. And checking the Brewers minor league rosters and stats, they don't have anyone decent at 3b in AA or AAA.

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) SO, based on their needs, we would have to give them Josh Fields and either an arm, or Anderson. I don't know the price in terms of talent. But if the sox were to deal w/ MIL, both GM's would give up similar talent to try and get another win-win deal. I'm sure the price to get a bat and glove like Overbay would be high. So Fields and Anderson might be the kind of price the sox would be asked for

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) I beleive MIL thinks he is ready, but there simply is no room for him, hence Overbay rumors. Like you said, his service time has already started, and obviously the Brewers aren't winning the divison in the next two or three years, so you know they are going to want to get there future star some legit time. The only holdup IMO is that Overbay is still very cheap(at least ESPN.com says he is only making 450,000.) ESPN says Overbay has 4 yrs in the bigs. So, he'd be eligible for a big raise next yr. He'd likely get over $2 mill, maybe close to $3 mill, wouldn't he? Seeing how everyone in the world knows Melvin has to deal Overbay, other GM's may try to bargain him down. If Melvin gets a very good offer from KW, Melvin could be smart to deal him now. Esp if the sox have a player who fits in better w/ MIL's plans than Lyle. Like Brian Anderson. It depends on what MIL needs, I guess

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
Looking at it this way, Overbay would come cheaper than Huff, just because the DRays GM is out of touch w/ reality. Melvin sounds like a reasonable man, based on his past deals

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:45 PM) I would be shocked if the Sox acquired Overbay. I think right now they are exhausing all possibilities for a replacement for Frank. I wouldn't doubt they are looking at and have scouted Overbay, because he would be a logical replacement, but actual serious trade discussions I would really doubt. There really wouldn't be much to scout. He's a career .340 minor league hitter who is getting more power in the bigs [though he hit for over a .500 slg % there too], and has a very good glove. The only question is what would the sox have to give up?

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:40 PM) They brought up Fielder to basically get his feet wet. They had a couple series' against AL teams and thought it was a good time to get him up there as the DH. I think he played a couple games at 1B while he was up, too. So Fielder's service has started, correct? The only reason then to not keep him up for good is if he's not ready [hitting .264 with strong OBP and SLg numbers] or can't field well enough to stick. Seeing how his glove won't get much better from now until the start of 2006, the only question is if his bat is ready.
-
Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
I thought Fielder was still up with MIL. I didn't know it was for only 1 game. But with MIL 2 games under .500, they have to know this yr it's unrealistic to fight for the wildcard. If Fielder is ready [which it seems he is--I don't know his stats in AAA], Overbay could be moved in the right deal for MIL.

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) Are you the Brewers GM? The way I look it as is: 1 Milwaukee pretty much knows they have a very little shot to do anything this year. 2 Now might be the time to get peak value in return for overbay. EVerybody in the MLB knows that Overbay is going to get moved so Prince Fielder can get take over. It certainly can't help Overbay sitting on the bench watching Prince slowly take his job away, when Lyle's done everything asked of him and more. If Melvin was a straight up guy, he'd move Lyle before the 31st so he can continue to develop. But Melvin has to let everyone know [other gm's] that he isn't just going to give away Overbay. could be some posturing on Melvin's part, saying he'll hold onto Lyle 'til the offseason. But I also heard him say in an interview w/ BOers and Bernstein less than a month ago

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:25 PM) I dont know about that, Prince Fielder showed them he could hit major league pitching, and getting him a half season in the bigs wouldnt hurt him at all. Isnt Overbay a free agent after this season? If so, Milwaukee would be wise to move him now so they can get something for him. Overbay may be arb. eligible this offseason if even that. He won't be a FA for a few yrs.

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) Overbay would be a perfect short and long term fit for the White Sox. It's interesting to see the sox thinking about the long term as well as the short term future make up of the team with any possible trades. A trade like this would definitely be about helping the sox this yr and the next few.

Sox scouting Lyle Overbay
QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:17 PM) As I posted in another thread, Milwaukee isn't going to trade Overbay this season. They are going to wait until the offseason before they make a move with him. I remember hearing an interview w/ Melvin and he said most of the time the best deals [for the best value] are made in the offseason. Yet like Jim H said, both gm's could try for a win-win trade in the Lee-Pods mold. If anyone can get Overbay from MIL, KW probably could.
