  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:34 PM) It could be interesting calling him up straight from AA. Francour is a much higher touted prospect, I believe he's in the BA America top 15 but Jerry Owens could do something for this club. However there's about no chance that we see him this season. Francouer was hitting only .275 with a .320 OBP. At the minimum, he could give the sox OFers a rest, but still provide the sox with some Pods like energy
  2. QUOTE(the People's Champ @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:31 PM) If we have to rely on an unproven minor leaguer to get us back on track, we are in trouble the idea isn't to "get the sox back on track". I didn't say that. It's to give guys a rest while having a fresh pair of legs and bat like Pods around. Who knows, the sox might strike it big like with Jenks, and have a young guy stick around for the playoffs. If he fails, no big deal.
  3. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:31 PM) Im not sure where we would put another lead off hitter. the nine hole
  4. While this may belong in the minors thread, I thought this might be a better spot. With all the rookies coming in and playing well across both leagues from as low as AA [like Murton, Francouer], the sox might be able to get a spark from one of their own. Jerry Owens is 2nd in the league in hitting [over .330], and has a great OBP [near .400]. With his speed and ability to get on base, he could really provide a spark. Whether its at DH or in LF [putting letting Pods, Dye and Aaron take some time off at DH], Owens could give the sox a lift as the regulars are tiring a bit. While Owens might not last long on the roster [hell, I'd put Carl on the 15 day DL to make sure his hammy is healed], the sox sure could use some energy that a guy like owens could bring. Any thoughts on how or if his skills could help the sox out this year?
  5. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) Trade who? And what do we do with his salary? They pay it. Ray's bat is the kind the sox could use. They don't need another power bat. They could use another OBP guy who hits close to .300. in the #3 hole. Carl Everett likely won't be resigned for next yr. Ray would then take over DH and play 2b when Iguchi needs days off. As far as who trade, maybe 3b Josh fields who could plausibly take over when Alfonzo leaves after 2006. Crede has proven [with his glove and decent bat] that he's the sox long term guy [at least for the next few yrs] at 3b
  6. I doubt any NL team would be foolish enough to claim Griffey to play CF, esp. with his injury history. Playing CF fulltime isn't what his legs need. Only an AL team would claim him, and that would be to DH. I doubt the yanks or red sox would claim him. The only question is would the reds deal him or not.
  7. Make a trade with SF for Ray Durham. He should make it through waivers. Getting Ray for DH and a few games at 2b wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Esp as Ray could bat in the #3 hole
  8. Adkins is here because Ozzie doesn't want to screw up the rest of the bullpen which has been lights out. The other guys need to throw regularly. But not too much that they're overworked and used up before the playoffs. Adkins is the odd man out by design. If Adkins is getting too much work, that means the starters aren't going long in games. If the starters are going into the 7th inning, the other guys can close out games from there.
  9. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) It seems the Sox have just partook in what I call the "Garcia Effect." I think our club--much like just about any other club in baseball--doesn't seem to get up for the weaker clubs as they do the stronger. I'm not condeming them for this, but I think it's something they have been guilty of as of late. I'm confident they'll play the way we know they can over these next 15 games. With the weather the way its been [damn hot and humid], with a huge division lead, I'm surprised the sox haven't done worse during this stretch. They have stayed away from the big losing streaks, though, which no other team in the AL has done. But I agree, it's time to step up. And the sox will no excuses if they lose concentration during this stretch
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 07:22 PM) I'm actually kind of excited about this stretch, I think we'll play better against the tougher competition but that's jmo. I agree. It's kind of hard to "get up" for the Mariners and blue Jays of the baseball world. The sox will have no excuses if they play poorly against the better teams of the AL
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) This stretch is now useful just as a test of us against good teams to see how good we really are. It's not going to decide the division though. very true. It could certainly be a confidence booster. Or a wakeup call to play like they did earlier in the yr.
  12. QUOTE(Kogs35 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 07:03 PM) ugh enough with geroge freaking offman and his so called sources. the guy is a fake, and steals info from bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce and others These guys have better sources than the typical fan. They hear things. not everything works out. Take everything with a grain of salt, like any other sort of information
  13. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 06:59 PM) Hold on. Did Offman mean that a trade was in the works as in a few weeks ago before the deadline, or was in the works as in right now? It seems that everyone thinks you mean it's going on right now. My bad. I should have put "the trade" was in the works, before the deadline. Didn't say the Sox were still pursuing Griffey
  14. FWIW, GEorge Offman said this AM that 3 sources confirmed that a Griffey trade was in the works, with Griffey agreeing to waive his no-trade to the sox
  15. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) well, considering how we're doing against the Blue Jays and Mariners, I'm a tad worried.... I'd be more worried if the sox tanked these next few weeks against the better teams. If they lose and play tough, so be it. But if they look bad in losing, then it'd cause for concern. I think they'll be fine
  16. The Sox next big "test" starts on Monday as they head to the Bronx. Over the course of the next few weeks, the Sox play the Yanks and Twins for 6 games each and the Red Sox for 3 in Boston. My guess is the sox will step it up a bit, esp. as 9 games are on the road where they seem to be more focused. We'll see if the sox play with more intensity and fire, as Ozzie talked with them. Being more patient at the plate would certainly help. By playing solid defense, getting good starting pitching, and by making pitchers throw a lot of pitches, the sox should be more than alright and fully capable of winning each series.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) Young is likely to have an 8 million dollar option kick in because of 500 ABs. No way do I want to pay him that much money next season, when he can really only play DH. One other thing about getting a guy like Young, Det. [and other teams] would likely kick in some cash if the Sox included another prospect or two. Salary relief = decent prospects. I think the sox would be more than willing to pay in minor league talent for another bat who can help this yr.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) Young is likely to have an 8 million dollar option kick in because of 500 ABs. No way do I want to pay him that much money next season, when he can really only play DH. I'd like the sox to pick up someone who has a high OBP. Young doesn't, though he makes a lot of contact like AJ. If I had to choose power over OBP, I'd choose OBP. Even if the guy didn't hit lefty.
  19. QUOTE(ISF @ Aug 5, 2005 -> 09:35 PM) Guys who are likely to sail through waivers: Dmitri Young, Sidney Ponson, Odalis Perez Perez I would claim if I were KW. I would have no problem with grabbing Perez and sending Contreras through waivers. Only a 1.5 mil increase in payroll there and gives us the extra lefty we need. Perez' ERA would be over 6 in the AL. I'd rather stick with Jose, at least he's healthy Dmitri Young wouldn't be bad. Although I'd be worried about his hallucinations [saying Det. and Cle. would be battling for 1st place this yr]
  20. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) M's called up a nice prospect in Chris Snelling. Outfielder. Ibanez will probably DH for M's or sit. Nice guy off the bench if we got him. Next yr, they'll have DH Bucky Jacobsen back. Not to mention that I read Sea. was talking about moving SS Morse to Dh as his glove is poor.
  21. QUOTE(spiderman @ Aug 5, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) SF might be relunctant to trade anybody since they want to be a contender with a healthy Bonds....We'll have to see on that one, but I wouldn't rule it out. Ibanez sounds like a decent fit. He's quietly having a nice season, and isn't overly expensive. Does he play the field at all anymore ? SF would love to get rid of Ray, as talk about trading him the last few yrs has come up. But he'd be strictly a DH type, with less pop from the LH side. But for an OBP and high avg guy [around .300] Ray would be a decent option for a yr Ibanez could play the OF at least as well as carl--at least LF maybe RF. He's played some 1b as well.
  22. Here are two other names of guys who'd have a pretty easy time getting through waivers, due to their contracts in '06: Ray Durham and Raul Ibanez I bet SF would pick up more than half of Ray's 2006 $7 mill salary. Putting him at Dh and giving Iguchi some time off at 2b wouldn't be the worst thing to get Ray's avg. and OBP in the lineup Ibanez would probably clear waivers, as he's basically a DH at this point. The Yanks and Boston wouldn't need him. Without the big power, Sea. having Ibanez at DH at $4.42 mill in '06 would seem to be excessive. Though on the sox, his avg. OBP and doubles would be a great fit. Esp as his hits RHP very well.
  23. QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) Jim, we actaully don't know why the stopped it. thats why we should revisit. Maybe they think they should get another player, a top player or a player off our roster. I think you get him. He is a force from the left side, a draw for fans and a playoff type player. He will put us over the top. With Carl iffy, the sox might try and revisit with an upgraded offer. Like a Ray Liotta type young arm, along with Chris young +.
  24. vizcaino has been very steady lately.
  25. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) what is the f***ing point of leaving him in???? there are still 2 1/3 innings left, the sox would have already used 3 bullpen guys, not to mention if the sox went to extra innings.
