  1. FWIW, with the addition of Blum, the sox could part with Uribe. I'd be all for keeping Juan as a UTL guy. Yet if it took trading Juan to get Omar, so be it. Juan's recent hot streak could make him more valuable
  2. I like the pick up. This should put Willie back in AAA, and strengthens the sox bench
  3. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:48 PM) Knowing Tampa's GM.....that means we don't have a chance in hell at Huff. No way we're getting him without giving up McCarthy (not that I'm complaining). This GM did get Kazmir for Victor Zambrano last season! Few teams will drop their drawers for TB's GM after the Kazmir deal. The best SP's I've read mentioned as trade bait by other teams have been in AA. So I wouldn't say the sox are out of the "Huff sweepstakes". Esp as TB wants Boston to overpay for Huff, which they don't seem willing to do. The sox might have the best offer out there, even w/o BMac
  4. Offman reported on the score that the sox were just interested in Huff, no Baez, and BMac wasn't in the offer. TB is very familiar with the sox farm system. Maybe Josh Fields would play a big part. I can't see them wanting an OFer.
  5. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 10:58 PM) The Twins would have to have another trade in line to replace at least Lohse, right? I think it would be a AAA SP who'd come up. If Soriano was Minn's DH, it would be a nice deal for them.
  6. Does someone know what other teams are looking at Huff? Seeing how Boston would have to seriously overpay for him, being in the same division, another team has to give up a top pitching prospect from either AAA or AA, is my guess.
  7. from the sounds of it, TB would get pitching for both Huff and Baez. No way would both go to the same team. The d-rays could get the top pitching prospects from both teams, say the mets [petit] for Baez and the sox [bmac] for Huff.
  8. I forgot about the DRays and Red Sox being in the same division. Looks like Huff won't be going to Bos. Who else would be in on the action for Huff? From the NY Post: "In the most widely negotiated version of the three-team deal, the Mets would have received Manny Ramirez, Baez and Tampa infielder Julio Lugo. The Red Sox would have received Cameron and Milledge from the Mets, and slugger Aubrey Huff and lefty reliever Trever Miller from Tampa. The Devil Rays would have received Heilman and Petit from the Mets and — this is where matters got bogged down — two prospects from Boston. The Red Sox had indicated a willingness to include pitcher Anibal Sanchez and catcher Kelly Shoppach, two lesser prospects. Boston apparently was willing to more seriously discuss Hanley Ramirez, an infielder, if it indeed could obtain Milledge, who perhaps would be spun in another deal. But the Devil Rays indicated that if Huff was going to play against them 19 times a year in the AL East they had to get a dynamic package in return, which meant both Hanley Ramirez and Lester."
  9. FWIW, the NY post thinks were close to getting Huff. "While the Sox chose to sit Ramirez vs. the Twins last night at Fenway for unspecified reasons, Tampa Bay was nearing a deal that would ship Aubrey Huff - one of Boston's primary acquisitions in the Ramirez blockbuster - to the White Sox." link http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...2p-284430c.html
  10. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) Randy Winn is supposedly being traded today. Not sure to who yet. Wasn't in on fox sports that Winn was scratched the lineup for todays game?
  11. QUOTE(spiderman @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) 1) Iguchi is Ozzie's self-described team MVP - yet he plays Willie Harris 2-3x a week to rest him. I understand Guillen doesn't want to tire out Iguchi, but let's keep this down to 1-2x a week, tops. 2) Podnesnik has also been rested quite often.... (Note: Some of this is due to Ozzie having 1 extra regular on his bench due to Frank Thomas (at the time)...Now that Thomas is gone, I expect Pods to get less rest). Welcome to soxtalk What ozzie has done [or the sox big lead has allowed him to do] is keep his regulars fresh. They'll need to be for the playoffs. now's the time to give them days off. In September, they'll be playing regularly, and will be in the lineup getting ready for the playoffs that's a positive, not a negative. The sox are winning games while resting their better players. What's not to like?
  12. So Eddie could come back at $4.25 mill for 2006. Better then the over $6mill. salary
  13. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) Not our biggest need, IMO. Politte is fine, especially if Eddie is pricey. Upgrading the pen should be plan C. The price for Eddie reportedly has gone down to a prospect, from before a major league player and a prospect. With his arm woes and big salary for '06, it sounds like the right price
  14. Mackowiak would no doubt take Willie Harris' spot on the roster, with Willie going to AAA or traded. Mackowiak would play 2b, 3b, CF to rest the sox current starters, and be a decent power bat off the bench. Not a "sexy" move, but very solid upgrade for the sox bench
  15. To get his ERA under 4.00 [now at 3.99] for a possible trade
  16. The biggest question mark for Eddie is taking on next yrs salary, w/ his partially torn rotator cuff. He might be fine for 2005. But taking on his big contract and giving up a very good prospect, few teams will be willing to do both. The sox might. so too Boston or the yanks. Yet Eddie can veto a trade to both those teams
  17. The article said Eddie had no trade protection to the Yanks, Red Sox and Orioles.
  18. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) I'd take Urbina for Vizcaino and Tracey if Wade doesn't want to move Wagner. Ozzie is very familiar w/ Urbina and if he wanted him, I'm sure KW could get him. It doesn't sound like Urbina is being moved or shopped
  19. Philly could use both BMac and Marte, this yr and the next few. Wade would be pretty foolish to pass it up. Then Marte could be in set up and Urbina moved to closer. Cormier and Fultz may be having decent yrs. But don't have Marte's stuff. Marte would be relatively cheap for Philly and no doubt would be an even better upgrade than Baez [at worst, they are a wash], who they have been rumored to want if they dealt Wagner.
  20. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 10:25 AM) Good point. I just can't wait till this is over. 32 hours/35 minutes to go. If it's that stressful on us fans, you can imagine how relieved the players will will be after 3pm on Sunday. Of course, there's always the waiver deals
  21. As the trade deadline has drawn closer, I am convinced that Ozzie has taken the "Good cop" role and KW the "bad cop" role in regards to possible trades affecting the sox roster. Going by their recent public statements, [esp. since last week when Ozzie was gushing over AJ Burnett] Ozzie sounds like the head of the family who wants to keep everyone together. While KW is the guy portrayed as wanting to break up the family. This tidbit from the Tribune the latest example.----------------------------------------- "We're out there trying to get the player [who can make the most impact]," Williams said. Manager Ozzie Guillen, who talks frequently with Williams, downplayed any chance of getting a big-time player. "Right now, there's nothing out there that's going to make this team better, believe me," Guillen said. ------------------------------------------------------ If this is the strategy, I like it. It takes the heat off Ozzie, who needs his players to stick by him, even if he'd like to replace a few of them. And it gives KW the right amount of fear that he needs from players to keep their "relationship" in perspective.
  22. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) Jenks is the sexy new prospect. We get it. But, think outside the box folks. If you're able to use Jenks to acquire a guy like Wagner, you do it in half a heartbeat, no questions asked. KW would scream "Deal!!!!" before Phillies GM Wade finished saying "OK"
  23. QUOTE(ceffa2000 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:19 PM) Yeah, but how often could a waiver wire guy BECOME an All-Star closer? Not declaring that he will be, but signs are looking positive right now. That argument might be decent for a GM looking to hang onto his job, who can point to a great deal as proof of his being a "genius". But for someone like KW who is looking to win a WS this yr, who has job security no doubt for a long while, that's probably secondary.
  24. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) Embree 2005 YEAR G IP H R HR BB SO W L Sv P/GS WHIP BAA ERA Season 43 37.2 42 33 8 11 30 1 4 1 0.0 1.41 .284 7.65 the key is getting a LHP who can get lh hitters out--even for 1 batter. LH hitters are hitting over .300 vs Marte. The key to me is how well they handle LH hitters. Embree may be a poor example. But a guy is out there who can get LH hitters out better than Marte has this yr.
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:12 PM) How can you guys mention Jenks in a trade? We arent giving up one of the hardest to find commodities in the game. He is cheap, young, and just realizing his potential at the big league level. You have got to be kidding me!! In the words of KW, "1917". Jenks may be a lights out closer for yrs to come. But not this yr. If he could be part of a deal that nets Wagner, I could live with that. For a middle of the road guy like Baez, certainly not One other thing--Jenks was a waiver wire pickup. How often could a waiver wire guy be used to pick up an all star closer? Not very often.
